OT: Crossing the border with kids & no hubby

I do agree with PP's who have said it's better to be safe than sorry and bring a letter just in case, but I'm curious if anyone has firsthand experience of not having a letter and being asked for one? What actually happened? I know, in theory, they can turn you away, but has it actually happened to anyone here?

Yes, travelling by car spring break 2007 going to grand forks for shopping and swimming with my sil and her 2 dd's. I had a letter and she didn't and we had to pull over and sil got a serious talking to before we were let through. SIL travels with a letter now...

Just crossed the border with my two DD's and spent a week in Florida:cool1: with no Disney:eek: but we still had a good time. Did not take the letter and had no problems. Coming or going.

I forgot to mention that my parent who were also in Florida at the same time brought back my nephews that are American. They had notarized letters and were never asked for them. Only question was are the boys staying with you?
