I am 5'2" and my DH is 6'2". Our two kids seem to be taller than average and we're just curious 'how' tall are they, really? We just measured them this week:

DS who just turned 12 in December is 5'5.25" (5 foot, five and a quarter inches).

DD who was 10 in October is 5'1.25" (5 foot, one and quarter inches).

They are not the tallest in their classes, but close. I don't consider either of them to be freakishly tall, but when I see my DD next to her peers - I have to wonder. :confused3

This thread is mosly for fun and out of curiosity. What's the average height for kids their age? And.... is there a good chance the fact that they're growing quickly (DS has grown 4 inches since June) that they will stop growing early.

When my daughter turned 3 she was 40" exactly. When she turned 5 she was 48" exactly. If the "4-inches a year" thing continues, she will be a giant by the time she is 10 :)

They are tall. My boys are grown now, but when our oldest DS was 12, he was 5'1" and he's 6'1" now. Youngest DS was probably about 4'6" at 12,and he's 5'7.5" now. Oldest DS was not the tallest, but was taller than most his age. Youngest DS was always smaller, but he went through puberty much later. They're 29 and 26 now. DH is 5'8" and I'm 5'3" so we knew we probably wouldn't have tall kids, but we had tall grandfathers (two of the four were over 6') so the genetics were there.

MY 9 yr old is short for her age( barely 48 inches) .BUT Dh is only 5'6 and I am only 5'2, so its not likely she is going to be tall

DS13 is about 5 foot 4 inches
Ds11 is 5 feet.

I was always on the taller side when I was young. In 5th grade, I was almost 5 foot 2 inches. Well, I'm 40 and I am still amost 5 foot 2 inches! I didn't grow at all since then!

Well, I stopped growing at about 12. For a year I was in the "tall kid row" in school pictures, and then it just stopped. But I was still 2 inches taller than my mom, who was 2 inches taller than HER mom!

My brother waited until well into HS to get a growth spurt, but then he maxed out just under 5'10".

My mom was 5'1", my dad is 6'2".

My husband is almost 5'11", and is the tallest in his immediate family.

Our son was 22" when brand new, and 2 feet by the time he was 2 weeks old. He's 8.5 now and is at least 54". His head is over my shoulder. I fully expect he'll be as tall as me by 10.

And in looking at all this, wondering where his height came from, along with other things about him, we realize that genetics aren't just from mom and dad. Somewhere in my genes I must have something from my dad in terms of height (figures if I got his temper I might as well get something good to pass along, too, LOL), and that seems to have passed along through me.

But also, I think it's good nutrition, too. DH is half Korean; his mom is full Korean. She's shorter than me, and was extremely malnourished growing up in occupied Korea. As was, pretty much, her whole country. For a LONG time before that and after. It's only recently that South Korea's situation has gotten better, and they are better nourished. If you compare North and South, you can see the difference food can make. They are the same people, the same genetics, but those who were lucky enough to be on the southern side of the western-made line are much healthier now (as long as they stick with tradition and stay away from western food!) than those stuck on the north side.

One of DH's cousins in Korea is well over 6' now, with NO ONE else in the family coming anywhere near that. He just recently shot up to that height. And there are other cousins younger than him, so who knows what is lurking in the genes, just waiting for proper food to bring it out?

But there's really no way to know if my son will continue to be a tall person. Guess we'll just have to see. :)

The calculator I was told for height when my kids were little was very accurate. Take a boy's height at age 2 and double it. Take a girls height at 18 months and double it. That will be very close to their adult height. I actually read it in a couple of pediatric/child development books.

I'd say your daughter is definitely on the tall side, OP. My son is also 10 and is about 5'2 and is one of the tallest in his class, as well as one of the youngest since he has a June birthday (he's in 5th grade).

My youngest is almost 7 and just over 48". He was able to ride RNRC on our trip last Sept and was thrilled he'd achieved the mark. By contrast, his older brother was 48" shortly after his 5th birthday, so definitely a height difference.

Using that "rule of thumb" that the PP mentioned about doubling kids' height at 2 to come up with their adult height, the nurse at my pediatrician's office estimated my oldest will top out about 6'4, give or take an inch. My youngest will be a little shorter at about 6'. My husband is 6'1 and I am 5'7.

I am 5'11" and DH is 6'4". So we are on the tall side. Here is the break down of my 4 boys:
DS14 is 6'1" - he grew 6 inches in the last year. One fall he changed a shoe size every month for 4 months. :scared:
DS11 is 5'5"
DS7 is 56 inches
DS5 is 47 inches

DS7 is tall for his age. He however is not the tallest kid in his class. He is third in line and the tallest is tall. I almost think that kid got held back a year though. He just seems older than 7.
DS11 is a slow grower. Has always been. I have a feeling he will be the shortest out of all of them.

DD18 is 5'7".

DS14 is 6'2".

DS is going to be very tall, we believe. My brother is 6'8".

Holy cow... Your DS is ALREADY 'very tall'. Lol.

My dd28 is 5'11". She was taller than her peers most of her life.

My ds11 is 5'1". He used to be taller than his peers before he started on ADD meds - he didn't grow at all for over a year. Then he grew 4" in 6 months. He is shorter than most of his classmates.

My dd9 is 4'7" and said she is the 2nd shortest in her class. That said she is 4" taller than her cousin who is 5 weeks younger than her. So maybe her class is just all extra tall.

I am only 5'1" and dh is 5'10".

My 1yr old is 34 inches, well she isnt even 1 yet....

I can not wait to see how tall she is at 18 months. My DH is 5'7 and I am 5'3 on a good day lol

My daughter is going to be very short! She has two weeks to go to be 18 months but she is just 30 inches now.

Ds 3 is likely to be very talk the calculator I did at 2 years said 6'3 (it said give or take 2 inches)

My DS is 7.5 years old and is 54 inches tall. He is the second tallest child in the 2nd grade at his school.

I think your DD is really tall. My DH and I are the same heights as you and your DH. My oldest just turned 10 a few days ago, and he's about 4'11". He's usually at least half a head tall than other boys his age. Most people guess he's about 12 or 13 when they first meet him. I think my son will end up being around 6'3" or more, but he's going to keep growing for another 6-8 years. Your DD will probably be done in 2-3 years.

My son is the tallest in his class, but he's my oldest, and I homeschool. :)

Yes, we get a lot of surprised looks when people hear that's only 10. Actually, she recently joined an out of town indoor soccer league where nobody knows us. She plays at the 3rd/4th grade level since she's a 4th grader. And because she's a head taller than most of the kids, we catch a lot of comments under people's breath questioning if she's really the right age. Nothing too nasty, but sometimes I just want to stand up and say SHE JUST TURNED 10, OKAY?! She's just a little girl but people tend to treat her and expect things from her as if she's a teen. It's even hard for us to remember too.

I read that too and it made me very sad because it means my boys will be 6'8" and 6'6".
Obviously having big strong boys is a nice thing, but my ex was 6'8" and the cost of feeding and clothing him was a nightmare!! Having two of them?? I guess I'll be working 2 jobs as they get older!! :lmao:

I'm 4'11" and my DH is 6'3'. Our daughter is 19 and she is 5'4 1/2" and has been since she was about 14. Our son will be 15 in March and he is 5'8 1/4 and growing like a weed. He has grown over 3 inches in about 10 months and his shoe size has gone from 7 to 11!!
