We are looking to camp at Roosevelt Campground in GA on the way to or from, this fall. Has anyone ever camped there before? The reservation system is kind of strange. You book at site size (40 ft or 25 ft), then when you get there you pick out yourself from what's availalbe. We have a pop-up, but I certainly want a big site, so should I book the 40 ft? The campground has several loops and you can't reserve one ahead of time, so I'm wondering where to look when I get there.

We live about 65 miles from there an have camped there twice last year. There are basically two sections. The section that is nearest the lake seemed to have recently renovated bath houses but the road was unpaved at the time we were there. The "back" section had a recently paved street and larger sites and I think the bath house was either just renovated or was scheduled to be renovated last summer/fall. Each site is very wooded. There is a fire ring and a charcoal grill (IIRC) at each site. The sites are gravel and fairly level, but not perfectly so. There is electric and water, but no sewer, at each site. There is no cable available either. There are gray water dumping stations about every third camp site in the "back" section where we stayed both times. The lake is stocked for catch and release. There are weekend ranger presentations that are really quite good. If you are going to be in the area for a couple of days, there is Calloway Gardens very close by that is really nice...especially see the butterfly house. There is also an animal park on the other side of the city of Pine Mountain that is OK but nothing compared to Animal Kingdom. There is also trail riding for about half the price of Ft. Wilderness that is really good. Much more diverse terrain and twice the time and distance for half the money. The FDR Museum is nearby as well and is very interesting along with the Little White House home. I recommend touring both if you have time.

This is Georgia's premiere state park and is recently begun a renovation project. It is also Georgia's largest state park by acreage.

Wow, thanks for all the info. Did you have any trouble finding an empty site when you got there? I am a little concerned that if we arrive after dark, it will be hard to find and get into a site. I think we may be arriving on a Friday, and it may be a crowded time.

When we were there both times last summer, there were two camp ground host. One in each of the two sections. They were patrolling the camp ground and offered to help us find a site that would fit our trailer.

The office closes at 5:00 or 6:00 on week days, but is open until 10:00, IIRC, on Fridays for late check-ins. The ranger is a stickler about having the card in the campsite marker to show that you have registered. If, however, you arrive after the office closes, you can get by until first thing in the morning, but he will make sure you have it soon after.

We stayed in the last campsite in the back section both times and liked it (closest to the entrance to the loop). It was a large site that faced the woods and was fairly close to the bathhouse if you need it and it is a really level site. It is also close to the playground without being too close. But it is directly across from the host's campsite. The dump station is at the rear entrance/exit to the camp ground which is near the entrance to this loop.
