OT - American Girl books?

Has anyone purchased the American Girl books for their daughters? My DD7 likes to read each night with dad. Most of the time DH reads to her, but sometines she reads a page or two. She just finished Heidi and enjoyed it, but usually reads the Tinkerbell books....unfortunately she has read them all and we need ideas for new books. I thought the AG books looked interesting and a little educational as well. There are many to choose from and I was wondering if some were better than others. Any recommendations would be great! Thanks!!

I got my DD7 some AG books for Christmas this year, mostly the self-help ones, ie Friends, Standing Up for Yourself, and the one about setting goals and how to acheive them. I hope she likes them!

My DD has read most of the book series that go with the traditional dolls. Her favorite series were the books about Molly. Her favorite book for the Doll of the Year books were the Mia books. DD's a figure skater so it didn't surprise me that she liked those.

I'm a teacher and I really love the Josephina books. We have to teach New Mexico history in 4th grade for one semester, so I always supplemented by bringing in DD's Josephina doll and read a couple of the books as read alouds. My students always loved them.

While the American Girl Doll books are excellent, they may be a little difficult for a 7 year old. Even some of my third graders have a little trouble with them.

Books my daughter absolutely LOVED that are geared toward that age group are the RAINBOW FAIRIES books by Daisy Meadows. I think they now have series for Jewel Fairies, Garden Fairies, Pet Fairies, etc. Really adorable books and girls just seem to eat them up.

I am so happy that you said that! I ordered dd the Rainbow Fairies box collection from Scholastic. I also got her Junie B, another favorite of that age group. Both were on her list. The AG books are other ones I chose because they reinforce the principals I have tried to teach her. You do have to be careful though some of the AG books are too much for a 7 year old. She has the Manners and Clutter one and has really enjoyed them. Clutter one is great because it helps with keeping her room organized!

My 7 year old has just recently started reading the American Girl books about the historical characters. It started off that I read to her the Felicity book each night at bedtime. Now, she has checked out the Kit and Addy books from her school library and she reads those on her own. We have also watched several of the movies (Kit, Molly, and Samantha), and she can't wait to read more after watching the movies. She has really enjoyed learning about all of the different time periods.

If your DD might like mysteries, my DD liked the Young Cam Jansen book series around the same time she liked Junie B. There's also a Cam Jansen series but it's probably more in the late 2nd to early 3rd grade level.

The AG historical girls' books (Kaya, Felicity, Josefina, Kirsten, Addy, Samantha, Rebecca, Kit, Molly, Julie) would be the best for early readers. Each girl has a series of 6 books. Be forewarned they do not skip over tough topics (Addy is mistreated as a slave, Kirsten has a friend who dies...) IMO, it is presented in an age appropriate way, but it may be an issue for more tender souls.

The historical short stories are a bit harder read, as are the "Girl of the Year" books. (Well, disclaimer DD only tried starting Mia. Was a much high reading level. I believe the others are similar though.)

I think I might buy DD one of the girl's sets and see how she likes them. She will have help from DH as he reads to/with her each night. Thanks again for all of the info!!

I loved the American Girls books growing up, and plan on sharing them with any daughters that I may have. I think that they would be perfect read-along reading at 7.

I read the AG books to my daughter who is 8 and in 3rd grade. Sometimes she reads a page and I read a page. She checks 3 at a time at the school IMC. We have read some of Kit's, Felicity (one of her favorites) and Molly (another favorite).

She has also read the Young Cam Jansens and loved those books last year in 2nd grade. Now she reads the Judy Moody books and Katie Kazoo series. Also the Nancy Drew (with her teacher) series.

At least we have found something to read the keeps her interested!
