Is there any advantage to renting directly from the owner vs. through an agency? I figure that it would be riskier renting directly from the owner whereas an agency may have liability insurance. Am I mistaken?

No, its no more risky than having an agency go bust on you. Try www.daystarvillas.com its a site I use.

The owners have to carry all insurance as part of their licensing requirements..you can get cancellation insurance privately from any vacation insurance company that will cover the cost of your rental in the event of cancellation.

We like "dealing direct" for a few reasons..
1) You're assured that the property you're renting is the one you will be staying in.
2) For the most part, it's just more pleasant to deal with an owner - they can answer questions about the house themselves.
3) The per night cost will probably be lower - sometimes substantially.

We've had a great experience dealing directly with the owner of www.sjsvillas.com

We got a beautiful 6 bedroom pool home for less than we'd have spent for a single hotel room. There are some great deals to be had if you just ask.
