Orlando Sentinal Hawaii article 10-4-07

I have long wanted to see DVC expand with more offsites. I hope this is only the beginning.

Heard rumor of this a couple months ago, glad it came true. NOw I guess I need to get my name on my guide's list for more info as it comes out.

Good article,

Notice the last part from Jim Lewis

"Further expansions are certain for a Disney unit that, according to Lewis, has seen revenues, profits and membership double since 2003. Lewis mentioned Lake Tahoe on the California-Nevada border and the Caribbean as possible future time-share locations.
"This is a very important business to parks and resorts," Lewis said.:

If this is true, it certainly helps me to understand why DVC has been focusing on such LARGE on-site properties (with SSR and AKV). They are trying to "beef up" on-site properties to give off-site owners a place to trade into.

We had an article in our local paper today [sun 10/7] from an ap writer Mark Niesse about the Hawaii expansion. It said Disney has nver built a stand alone resort on its own with a theme park!! I wondering what we all have been staying in at HH and VB. He must have spent at lest 2 minutes researching for his story. I am really excited about Hawaii! Patsy:ccat:

Is he saying that the Hawaii Disney will have theme park--maybe water themed?

No...definitely no theme park. That was made very clear.

But the comment was that this is the first stand-alone MIXED USE resort with no theme park connection. Non-DVCers can't book at VB and HH....well, they CAN...but you know what I mean. Hawaii will have a portion that is just hotel rooms. The rest will be Villas. And that distinction makes it a first.

I think Boardwalk is dual use. The portion on the right (as you face the front) is not DVC. Same at Beach Club. So the Hawaii hotel is not the first dual use DVC resort.

This is the first mixed use resort without a theme park attached. The Lake Tahoe idea intrigues me if it is located at Stateline with transportation from the airport. The Carribean...that one I don't know...seems like they'd be building in an area overrun with timeshares unless its tied into Disney Cruiselines...plus there is the hurricane problem.

Isn't Vero mixed use? What about the Inn?

BW, BC, VWL, AKV, and GCV are ALL mixed use. But they are all also part of a theme park destination. As I stated above, Hawaii is the first mixed-use resort with NO theme park connection. Hope this clarifies things.

Anybody can call up and book a room for cash at vero or hilton head without being DVC, so it is mixed use. This is just disney speak, like saying that the Jungle Book "is released for the first time on a dual-disc dvd."

We are very excited, but I noticed this, which I think is a mistake:
------------
Disney spokeswoman Lisa Haines said any use of the company's iconic characters at the resort will be limited to those "that fit the authenticity of the area," such as figures from the 2002 animated movie Lilo & Stitch, about a Hawaiian girl who befriends an alien.

Characters are "not going to be a prominent part of this," Haines said
---------------

We should never forget this was all started by a mouse. If people just want a family friendly resort in Hawaii there is no reason to pay a premium for disney. People are going to want "disney."

Sure, any anyone can also call CRO and book a 2 br villa at SSR or BCV or wherever. The difference comes in ownership. Vero is a solely a DVC property. The fact that non-owners can call up and get a reservation only means that Disney itself also owns points. With HI, there are truly "cash" rooms.

I am not overly knowledgable about the Carribean. I have not had much interest in the past, but this would most deifintely spark such interest. HH and VB both have weather risk, and I am sure that there are areas of the carribean that would pose less risk!?!???

Also, I LOVE the idea of the DCL tie-in. The ability to do a "round-trip" somehow... Maybe split a 7-day cruise 4/3, with a day stop on at the location for those not staying at DVC. I have no clue... is Castaway Cay big enough for a Disney Resort?
