Am glad you have decided to hire a car, I simply couldnt function in Orlando without one altough many people do! And in the long run with airport transfers etc it may save you $$ or at least not come to too much more than without
Even though Universal is your main attraction have you decided what Disney parks you will do, if any? With a few days aside for Universal and one for shopping that still leaves you a few days for Disney!
