I just realised I'm going to be starting my holiday on Labor Day weekend (land on Friday Aug 31).

I - and the guys I'm going with - would really love to do something with "the locals".

Do you know of anything that's going on in and around the orlando area that we could consider? I doesn't have to be park-based/related. Maybe a huge BBQ or something? Have any of the radio stations got events planned?

I understand there are loads of sales in the stores at that time which is great news.

Labor Day seems to be mostly about sales from memory - not everyone even has the day off.

Cant remember seeing anything like a big barbeque etc and we have been at that time several years. 4th July is really the big celebration.

Its really like a small bank holiday over here.

Yes, labor day is basically the equivalent of a UK bank holiday.

It has no meaning other than the demarcation line between summer and fall - in the northern states (where i'm from originally), it's the day after which you can no longer wear white. It's not as if there are clothing police who come around and hit you on the legs or something, but that's considered the break between summer and not summer.

also, in many states, kids go back to school right after labor day - which is why it's also viewed as the "summer's over" day.....

there are labor day sales (just as there are columbus day sales, and presidents day sales, etc etc), but the day itself is not marked by anything at all.....not BBQ's or anything....it's just a monday holiday, nothing more...

and by the way, the last time i was at WDW for labor day, the crowds didn't seem to be all that much affected - i guess because so many kids are already in school or about to go back to school, people don't travel to WDW, even just for the weekend...

We're flying out on the 30th! Looks like we're gonna be there at the same time. Where are you staying?

My mum was at WDW last Labor day and she said the parks were quiet as the locals went to the beach.

I've not heard of anything specific that's going on that weekend. Once we move into August there may be some advertising of Labor Day weekend events.

In the meanwhile, downtown Orlando on Saturday night is always crowded with local partiers at dozens of clubs. Sunday night is Service Industry Night at House of Blues, Downtown Disney. While they have that event every Sunday, holiday weekends are extra crowded because so many people don't have to work in Monday. Mostly locals.

Hi,

we got married on Labour day in 2005.

We didn't notice any difference to park crowds etc as a result of this.
I think like the others have said its just another bank holiday really.

Though you can buy WDW labour day pins with the year on them, so cute!

Happy holidays!
