Orange County Fl lifts all Corona viruses restrictions

Oh yeah definitely. My 1st grader has weekly Covid tests at school, has to wear a mask at all times, and have to step outside the classroom to drink water. The extra testing definitely feeds into the lower number. It also does stop the spread of those walking around unknowingly spreading it, though. That’s the only thing that is scaring me a bit about my trip this month. There are going to be more people around than I am used to not isolating because they don’t know they have it due to the lack/ease of getting a test (and I live in a city that was the country’s epicenter in January so that’s saying a bunch). I wouldn’t have an issue if it were only vaccinated people that were maskless, but since there is no way to verify your status, I don’t feel comfortable with my kids being super close crammed in a line to an unvaccinated, maskless potential spreader. Sounds melodramatic, but I am not ready to go back to normal at Disney or IRL until herd immunity is reached and we are not there yet.
Yeah, I'm with you there. Wish they could stick to the actual CDC recommendation and only allow vaccinated people to take masks off, but unfortunately Florida has made that impossible. It will be interesting to see what Disneyland does in the next few weeks, since California seems much more open to allowing businesses to require proof of vaccination status.

As a parent of a child under 12, I have followed the info closely on this. It’s just a non-issue. I think some ppl have legitimate concerns about this, but I also think some ppl still use this argument as an excuse b/c they’re fearful to let the masks go. Schools here have lifted the mask mandates as of June. Again, they had been very cautious about mask up until now.

Hospitalization numbers look worse for COVID-19. But those numbers are inflated as a result of the CDC's reporting rules. The CDC requires every child admitted to a hospital to be tested for the coronavirus.

Dr. Roshni Mathew, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at the Stanford University School of Medicine, says experience at her hospital found that 45% of the time, a child who tested positive for the coronavirus was not actually sick with COVID-19. The findings have been published online in the journal Hospital Pediatrics.

In those cases, hospitalization was due to "a completely unrelated diagnosis, like appendicitis or femur fracture or something else," she says.

For children in particular, the risk of serious consequences from COVID-19 is the same magnitude as the risk they face from the flu, she says. But many parents seem more worried about the new and less familiar disease. That anxiety is heightened by the new guidelines on mask-wearing. But experts urge parents to try not to worry too much.

"If you stop going into stores because you're terrified you'll run into an unmasked person, that's probably overreacting," says Gretchen Chapman, a psychology professor who studies health conundrums like this at Carnegie Mellon University.

It's understandable why parents would feel that way, she says. Though these risks are very low, they're not zero. And people struggle to conceptualize the difference between small risks — for example, something that's 1 in 1,000 versus 1 in 1 million

If you are vaccinated, then the CDC and other scientists have stated that you don't need a mask. You are >90% resistant to the virus, and if infected, your symptoms are typically much less severe. Therefore, there is no logical or scientific reason for a vaccinated person to continue to wear a mask.

So, the only possible reasons left for vaccinated people who still wear masks are habit/routine and/or fear.
Or healthcare, where masks are still required for all. But I have no problem continuing to wear mine for 40 hours a week.

I think your experience is partly why there are so many huge differences of opinion on this. My DS has been in preschool all year with no masks. Elementary on up had masks but that was just lifted this past week. Nowhere her was doing weekly Covid tests on kids. Honestly, I can’t believe they do that to young kids once a week. There were no reports of any severe illness in young kids in any of these districts.
I agree with this. There is a wide range of experiences throughout the country. Our schools were in-person all year and never shut down. Masks required, but elementary were able to take them off at their desks. No testing. All sports seasons completed with only a few contact quarantines. No reports of severe illness in any of the three schools.
