Oprah, Bill Gates, etc. (NOT judging them!)

As for celebs that donate, while I'm sure there are those that do their donations (of time, money, etc.) in order to say "Look at me! Aren't I wonderful?" I'm willing to bet that most of them go public in order to draw public attention to the cause/charity/issue they are supporting, in the hopes of getting further donations. If I had press cameras following me around 24/7, I'd use some of that exposure to plug some worthy causes myself. Not to further my own image, but to get some publicity for my favorite causes.

I agree with this. Like it or not, Oprah seems to have a big impact on they way many people think. I think it's great for worthy causes when she publicly supports them, it raises awareness.

I bet the people who lost everything, including their families and other loved ones care.
However, you don´t seem to care.

OP, I agree, it´s interesting to think how much individuals, which such ressources, can help. But every $ counts!

I believe the point is that they are the only ones who should care.

Oh please, NO, I do not think that ALL celebrities do things out of the goodness of their hearts - just like not ALL the general public does (including Dis'ers).

My point was that many people make blanket statements that say ALL celebrities donate for publicity, and unless you know ALL celebrites and they ALL said it, then it is an assumption. Many (not all) people seem to think that when a celebrity is in the news (magazine, newspaper, tv article), that the celebrity is the one who was responsible for putting the info out there. Many (not all) people failed to realize that the media (esp. paparazzi) is constantly searching for things to cover and a celebrity can be doing normal, day to day stuff, and it's all over the news.

Sure, PR firms put stuff out there to put their client into the limelight, but that's not always the case. That's like saying that all Dis'ers are rude because some of them are.
I never said that ALL celebrities do, where are you getting that one from? :confused3 I said that some do, or maybe I used a different word? I'm pretty sure though that I never said ALL of them. I am perfectly aware that not ALL celebrities are egotistical, narcissitic attention seekers. Just some of them. ;)

If they keep it quiet some people assume that they gave nothing and then they get blasted for that. There doesn't seem to be a 'right' way to do it.

I agree. And it would never cross my mind to wonder how much another person donates to a cause. It is none of my business, and I have no right to judge them on it.

Regardless of how much money Oprah is undoubtedly going to donate, she's doing a great service to the Haiti relief already...think of it this way, say 2 million people tune into Oprah on a daily basis, she has urged that number of people to donate to the Red Cross via text, and I can guess that at least half of them will since Oprah said you should, so if that 1 million donated $10, then she has in essence helped the red Cross receive $10 million in donations. On top of what she's already or will soon donate herself.

So instead of thinking about what that 1 person has donated or will donate, think about all the money she has already helped gain for the Haiti relief.

Another celebrity who is helping releif organizations is Olivia Wilde from House, the last I heard she has said that anyone who emails her their receipt showing a donation of $200 will receive a personalized video of her, doing or saying what, I'm not sure but still that is a great idea and I'm sure that loads of people who are fans of her will do just that in order to get the video. So even if 1000 people do that, that's an additional $200,000 coming from everyday citizens.

That's what matters most, the smaller amounts that normal people donate is what's going to add up to the big numbers that it's going to cost in order to help Haiti.

You are right I don't give a rat's patooey how much Bill Gates, Oprah, Brangilina, etc donate. They could donate $100 or $1,000,000. Its really not my, yours, or the public's business how much they do or don't donate.

Don't mistake my not caring how much any celebrity donates for not caring about the tragedy and its victims. That's a HUGE leap.

Yes. Absolutely. :thumbsup2

And so people can´t be interested in things that aren´t their business?

I edited my original post. There is a misconception that because some of us may wonder, we are judging. Personally I feel like I am being judged because I posed the question. I am talking about big name celebrities who are in the news a lot. I would not judge them or ANYONE on how much they gave. I cannot imagine being that wealthy and wonder what I would do if I was a billionaire. I really did not intend to start a debate or cause any hurt feelings. :confused3

If that were the case, there would be a LOT less posts on this board ;)

You made it very clear that you were not judging anyone. I can by no means understand why this is such a sore subject for people here on the Dis.

Yes, that's exactly what I meant.

The OP made it very clear that she was just wondering, and interested, and the she was NOT judging anyone. Please explain, why people aren´t allowed to be interested and curious about this, just like anything else?

Honestly snappy, I don't think anyone on here is judging you. I think we are talking (debating?) more about whether or not we, the public, have the right to know how much they (the celeberties) are donating, keeping in mind that there are always going to be people (not you snappy) who will judge them for the amount.

If the OP made it very clear then why did the OP have to edit the original post to make it clear? I'm also not the only that misunderstood the OP's intentions. They must not care about the Hatians either.

See here, you are just trying to continue a debate. I edited my post with good intentions when it was pointed out to me that is was confusing. You are the one who said "who cares". A lot of us care.

I think she went back in and edited because she realized that not everyone was understanding her original intent. Sometimes our thoughts don't come out quite like we intended them do and some people misunderstand them.

She was just curious. It's human nature to be curious, doesn't mean that curiousty is judging though.

Why are you trying to pick a fight? You´re the one who asked "who cares"? You for one obviously do care about some parts of this subject, since you want to debate it. I never said you don´t care about Haitians, so if you say someone else doesn´t do it either, you must be the one saying you don´t care about them.

It is none of our business and everyone has the right to pick and chose their own charity, but that said, I heard this morning that Bill Gates donated $1.25 million dollars. What is pathetic is that China only donated $1,000,000. I think we can hold countries to a different standard.
