(all completely hypothetical)

I am hoping to buy, close, and complete on a 50 point contract for Hilton Head, during the dates of December 2017-February 2018. Throw in say a April use year, just for example.

If I were able to book a studio for the dates of October 8-10, 2018 I would try to book immediately once every thing was good to go, hopefully by late February 2018. It would require 28 points. I would have 22 points left over.

Then I would love to try to book a studio at the Poly for three nights, say May 14-17, 2019. I am calculating that the 7th month booking window would be on October 14, 2018. If that were possible, I would need say 72 points to do so.

So would I need to first bank my 22 points left over in 2018 and then borrow all my 2019 points to book on October 14, 2018 for a Poly studio in May 2019? Or just borrow 2019 points?

Would this be correct, if ever thing lined up correctly with rooms available and such?

If you get an April UY, your May 2019 trip would fall in your April 2019 UY. You wouldn't be borrowing any points from 2019 because your trip would fall in 2019 UY. You would need to bank the 2018 points before the end of the first eight months of your 2018 UY.

Depending on points accounting/availability one could easily lose points in this example. One would lose points if there were banked 2016 points in the 17 UY and/or if all 2017 points were banked to 18 UY and then used for the HH reservation. Plus getting the right UY and contract may be a chore on such a tight window. if it was important to get that size and for the reservation, I'd start now, esp if UY seemed important. I continue to believe that the savings in this situation does not justify the risks and aggravation. On 50 points you won't even save $1K on 50 points and likely more in the $500-600 range since HH closings are more.

Use year doesn't really matter to me. We might travel any time of the year.

If you're not able to target a UY, DVC is inherently more risky. If there's a likely time you're travel or a time of year that's more risky for you for changes or cancelations, it might make more sense than you initially think. IF it truly doesn't matter, it'll give you more contracts choices which may improve your value. Then there's the question of whether HH is the best choice if it truly doesn't matter because part of the year you can get a reservation fairly easily.

I'll remember this. I have a good 6 months to get this all figured out and I'll try to narrow down the best two use years for us and keep those months in mind. Like I said before, in my perfect world, a trip to Disney in late January/early February and a trip to Hilton Head in July would be awesome. (probably every other year though). But really, more use at Hilton Head
