I booked a dinner at Sci-Fi thinking it would be different and fun. However, the UG (2005 which I still have) says it's overrated, the food terrible for the price. Their suggestion is to go for dessert or a drink only, to check it out, but to eat elsewhere.

I went to PrimeTime 50's last time, but didn't get a kitchen table, just a regular table. I didn't enjoy that and was underwhelmed with that experience.

I've always wanted to go to Mama Melrose, but it doesn't like like they have typical italian food and pizzas that kids will eat, or do they?

I think the UG is right on with this one. The Sci-Fi is far too overrated, expensive, with bad food and service.

I agree with this.
THe kids liked the atmosphere, but the food was horrible and expensice for what it was. I've had better meals at costco.

I have been there 3 times and each time with the same outcome. There is nothing special about the food. You are paying for the atmostphere. It is a very limited menu and I think I paid something like 13 dollars for a Turkey Club. The kids love it and it is a really cool place to go to. The service, for me has been "meh". Not awful but not really great either.

We've eaten there a few times and liked it. Last time was with free dining. I ordered the butcher's steak and it was ok. DS ate all of his, so he must have liked it. They had great milkshakes. I had great service. My waiter was really nice.

The kids loved the movies and the great part was that DS sat in the front with me and DD sat in the back with DH, so no fighting at the table like they usually do.

Like any restaurant I think you have to try it yourself before you completely write it off. We ate at Sci-Fi twice on our Oct. '07 trip and enjoyed it both times. The turkey club is great (pretty filling too), DH loved his burger and the onion rings alone are worth the trip (imho). Our boys (6 & 2) both loved sitting in the cars so that might have made our meal more enjoyable than having to continually telling them to sit and behave. :)

Mama Melrose's was also a great experience during our last trip. The boys both loved the flat-bread pizza, DH practically licked his lasagna plate clean and I almost licked my chicken parm. plate spotless.

We'll definately go back to both places.

If you never went to any Disney World restaurant that has ever gotten a bad review, you'd be walking around hungry all the time. We like the Sci-Fi. It's one of our favorites. We had a take a break from it for a while though because we ate there so often that the film clips weren't fresh to us anymore. We just went back this year and had a great meal. The food will never impress a foodie but we're not foodies. I find myself laughing out loud to the movies clips and we both just have a great time and relax.

Try it yourself. But don't go in there thinking "the Unofficial Guide thinks this place stinks". Then it won't be a nice dining experience for you because you've already condemned it.

We loved it! Everyone in my party kept it simple and ordered cheeseburgers and we were all pleased. The onion rings are really good, too! I LOVED the cookies-n-cream milkshake.

I think you should try it. The atmosphere of the restaurant is really cool.

I have to agree with the previous poster, if you wait to find a restaurant that someone here isn't complaining about, you won't eat. We did enjoy Sci Fi and felt the the menu was much better than Prime Time, which we felt was very limited. I liked Mama Melrose, the rest of the family wasn't impressed, they liked Sci Fi better than it or Prime Time. I didn't notice the pricing since we were on the dining plan.

I agree with other posters, its really difficult to take reviews as 100% fact. Each person is different. For us, we have always enjoyed Sci Fi. The kids love the place, the atmosphere, the movie clips etc. We have always had excellent service there. Dh and I don't care too much for the food. We have tried a few things but the best for us is to keep it simple..burgers and fries. The kids have never complained about their food...and they normally get a variety of things. So, we probably always will hit Sci Fi at Disney and hope for the best. 2x's was fine, 1 x was not so great and hope for a better culinary experience next time. But, for the kids it will always be on the list.

If you have never been, I would at least try it once and make your own decision. There have been a couple rest that have gotten some not so great reviews we have tried. Sometimes, we have last minute choices. Maya Grill seems to not get great reviews but we tried it and reallly liked it. For the experience, Sci Fi is definitely one of those places you have to do at least once!

We liked it. The food is Applebees/Chiles quality and type. Nothing fancy, but not bad. You pay extra for the food to cover the atmosphere. Service has been fine all 3 times.

The Desserts are good.

I am going to make a ADR for lunch so we can have burgers and shakes. The kids really want to try it and I think it would be neat, just don't go in thinking 5 Star..

We have gone there a few times in the past. While it is not one of our favorites the atmosphere is worth experiencing at least once. The food has never blown us away, but we always have had a good time there. It is also a great break from a hot summer day.

It is a must do for the kids every trip. That is the ONE restaurant they requested. It is what it is. We had a great waiter(once he found out we were NOT on the dining plan)We stick to Burgers and Milkshakes when we go and it is fine. It creeps....it crawls......beware of the BLOB....

I booked a dinner at Sci-Fi

You can order a burger, even though it's on the lunch menu. That's what we did. Even so, the food was iffy, at best. But the atmosphere was exceptionally fun!!!! My boys (ages 9 & 11) loved it and are begging to go back next trip. (don't know if we will or not). But if I were you, I'd go once, just for the experience of it.

We've stayed 10 days at WDW this past December and Sci Fi was easily DH's favorite place to eat this time. We got there for lunch and had spinach and artichoke dip to share. DD10 had tomato soup, hamburger and fruit salad. DH had Angus Chuck Burger and I had the Shrimp Penne Pasta. They were all great! The films were eh! We also made sure that we had the vanilla milk shake. That was terrific! We've been wanting to go to Sci Fi in the past years and was turned away because we didn't have ressies. This year, I made sure that we had ressies before going in and I'm glad we did!
The restaurant is VERY cute inside! I never expected it to look the way it did!
If you didn't make the ressies, go for it!

I was not impressed. I have eaten here twice now. Both times the food is poor overpriced and it was very cold in there. I had to look silly and cover my arms with serviettes that were on the table. I have to say the looks I received it was rather funny. It was way to cold and found this uncomfortable.

The place is alot of fun. Dark and cool with a great drive-in theater feel. The movie clips are corny and fun. Stick to food like burgers, fries, onion rings, sandwiches, salads, and milkshakes and you will be fine.

Must go each time we are on property. I do not think the food is bad. It certainly will not be THE cullinary experience you have at the world. It IS one of the coolest atmospheres. Eating in the car, watching the classic clips on the big screen. My family enjoys it and I really feel obligated to say so any time I see a thread pop up that's ready to write it off.

As always, YMMV.
