Have all of you DVCers bought "new," or has anyone gotten in
on a resale? Is there a major difference? Advantages?
Disadvantages? I think we'd like VWL, but have stayed at OKW
and find it really comfortable and feels like "home." Considering
the possible price difference, it seems like it might be the way
to go. Any thoughts?

We have purchased both ways. The deciding factor can be twofold.....purchase where you want to stay and see what kind of savings may be available with a resale vs. direct purchase.

If you prefer VWL- you are unlikely to find a resale for less than a direct purchase (especially if you can use MB). For OKW, you have no option besides resale.

Do the math and make sure to include cost per point, closing costs and maintenance fees on available points. Keep in mind that DVC pays all closing costs, offers MB, prorates the annual fees for this year and can offer 2001 points. Resales may come with banked (or borrowed points), may require closing costs (usually $450-600 range) and may ask buyer to pay full year's maintenence fees.

Good Luck!

I have bought 8 timeshare weeks and all were resale. I must say that the difference between resale and retail is the lowest for DVC. In every other case, I paid 60% or less (usually much less) than the current sales price through the company. Look at the number but don't forget to factor in home resort, closing costs (which DVC does not charge if you buy from them), maint fees reimbursement and number of points available in addition to the base price. In general, the difference between DVC directly and resale is less than 15%, sometimes much less. I've seen resales actually go for more than if one bought through DVC directly.

Resales can be a good deal however. If you want a certain resort or if you're careful about the prices and additional charges, you can do OK.

Hi MOM B

We bought through Disney in 1994 and bought a resale in 1999 both at OKW. We had great experiences with both transactions.

I sent you private message since the message and experience was long so click on the pm button to read the message.

Good luck and certainly do your homework on DVC. There is a lot to consider when buying direct or resale.
