Operation Big Thunder: the Dole Whip Conspiracy COMPLETE

Monty Python and the Holly Grail

And no I not stalking, I was just putting up an update to my TR and saw the notification.

+1:thumbsup2

I’m enjoying it.
Nice spin on the notion of a TR game and it gets folks to read up fairly closely as well.
Good move.

Well, that's a relief. Hopefully everyone else is too.

Better then I can do, that’s for sure.

Don't sell yourself short. You're a tremendous slouch.

Lol, finally catching up. Love the redneck window shades! Had a set just like them one summer vacation. I'm just impressed that you found a store that still has paper grocery bags! Looks like you all are having a wonderful time at the beach! Ouch about the sunburns though!

Looking forward to more!

If our friends hadn't had the bags, I'm not sure what we would have done. Eat the meals on the porch?

Huh, and here I thought it was the air speed velocity. Our of curiosity, for the non engineer, how does "average" relate to velocity ?

Monty python holy grail

You know, I think I did botch the quote slightly. I'll give you +1:thumbsup2 for making sure we rip off movies correctly.

In my line of work, being road design, average velocity would translate to average speed (we assume cars are traveling in the right direction). Certainly an average speed would be useful in determining travel times, delays, that sort of thing. Is that what you're looking for?

I've had to use a sheet for a window covering, when a cabin we rented had no curtains in the master bedroom. That is the window the sun rise hit first, lol.

Rig the barricade! Foul deck! Foul deck! This is not a drill!

Final Countdown

That's a more obscure film
(which I must sadly confess that i actually saw in the theaters)
If there are more quotes from that one I may miss them

Last year, she started running and training for a 5K. She met her goal, dropped a few pounds, finished 2 5K races, and made me very proud of her. She's kept going because it's helped her feel healthier.
:cheer2::cheer2: Good work, Julie!

Knowing we needed to bear right somewhere along the way to get to Patriots Point, I made a right turn...and we hit a major ramp leading us to this:
You choose...poorly.

I apologize, Darth. You can be my wingman anytime.
:darth: [heavy breathing] "Bull S***." [heavy breathing] "You can be mine."

Named in honor of an earlier aircraft carrier that was sunk in the Battle of Midway,
I know the military does it differently, and this is an honor, but would you get on a cruise ship named the Titanic?

it eventually capped its career by participating in the pickup of the astronauts of Apollo 8 before being decommissioned in 1970.
Cool!

Before going out to the ship, however, we stopped first to check out a possible add-on option for my minivan.
I'm holding out for the photon torpedoes.

Julie wanted to try and shut this hatch after the kids went through, but the stairs made it a little difficult.
Julie did, huh? BS.

Living quarters. Looks comfy, huh? And I thought the couch was uncomfortable. If, of course, Julie ever made me sleep there.
She will, if you keep dragging her name through the mud like you just did.

Basically, they have to catch you in a giant net. Soo...who wants to be a fighter pilot?
Yeah, still me. :wave2:

Back in the hangar, they had a special Medal of Honor museum. Inside, it told the poignant stories of many of the recipients, most of whom sacrificed their lives and were given the award posthumously. It was moving and uplifting at the same time, and well worth the time spent. There are a lot of people parading themselves around the country trying to pass themselves off as leaders and role models. They can't hold a candle to the people enshrined here.
::yes::

I know this is just a brief glance at the Yorktown, but it really was worth the time. How many chances do you get to walk on an aircraft carrier? The kids had a great time leading the explorations. I am amazed at how anyone could find their way around the maze of hallways. It's basically a city at sea--they have their own doctor's offices, dentist, machine shop, electrical shop, recreational areas...just a mind-boggling amount of detail went into building that ship. There's no wasted space. Check it out if you're ever in Charleston.

Excellent tour and pictures, Mark. :thumbsup2

!

Nicely said! :goodvibes

Is there something wrong with me that I don't remember crossing that bridge into Charleston? :rotfl: Is there another way in? :confused3 It really is a cool bridge and I'm not exactly sure where you were to take that picture.

I toured Charleston with girls, so we obviously did not visit the Yorktown. However, it looks really cool and Denny and I are definitely planning on stopping in Charleston on our way home from HHI. I will put that on the list. thanks for the great pics.

Last year, she started running and training for a 5K. She met her goal, dropped a few pounds, finished 2 5K races, and made me very proud of her. She's kept going because it's helped her feel healthier.
And she hasn't convinced you to join her yet? :confused3

I only mention this because her run on Tuesday morning led her to the Pawleys Island Bakery, and she jogged all the way back holding a bag of donuts and cinnamon buns dripping with icing. In my mind, this is the greatest justification for a run ever.
I still say being chased by a bear is the greatest justification, but this is a close second. :thumbsup2

Even better, someone else did the running for me, and I still got pastries. :woohoo:

With a security system like that, you'll never lose another catalytic converter.:lmao::rotfl2:

Enough fooling around.
LIE!!!

If, of course, Julie ever made me sleep there.
Ok, I'll call that a lie. I'm sure she's made you sleep there. :rotfl:

Here, Scotty felt the need...the need for speed in the cockpit.
Tower, this is Ghostrider requesting a flyby.

Is Scotty in an ejector seat??? :confused3 :rotfl2::lmao::rotfl:

Soo...who wants to be a fighter pilot?
Yeah, I'm with Barry. Sign me up! :thumbsup2

::yes:: It really is amazing. I got to go there once a long, long time ago. I'd love to go back sometime too.:thumbsup2

Coming Up Next: We're on a boat!
Um... I thought that's what we were just talking about. :confused3

Work was interfering with my Dis time (imagine that), so I’m only now getting around to commenting.

And away we go…

Last year, she started running and training for a 5K. She met her goal, dropped a few pounds, finished 2 5K races,

I hadn’t heard about that. Fantastic! It’s like the other folks around here that actually got up and started running.
I glad for them, but it hasn’t gotten me up off my rump to join ‘em yet.

Ok… now I feel bad…

But I happy for Julie!

and made me very proud of her.

Dude… you’d be proud of her no matter what and you know it.

She jogged all the way back holding a bag of donuts and cinnamon buns dripping with icing. In my mind, this is the greatest justification for a run ever.

Must agree…
Donut Justification!

Even better, someone else did the running for me, and I still got pastries. :woohoo:

Annnnnnnnd…
Sloth Justification!

If you've never driven Hwy. 17 between Pawleys Island and Charleston, you have missed out on...well, nothing.

::yes::

At the last minute, we saw a teeny-tiny sign that said "Ft. Sumter Tours" with an arrow pointing left, so I pulled off a classic NJ Turnpike-style cut-off move and got over for the turn.

:drive:
Ya’ did good to even make the turn.
Missing it would have been baaaad…

After making the turn off of Hwy. 17, we reached another light, with no signs directing us whatsoever.

Ummmm…
You went straight here… didn’t you?

Knowing we needed to bear right somewhere along the way to get to Patriots Point, I made a right turn...and we hit a major ramp leading us to this:

The Arthur Ravenel Bridge, on Highway 17 into Charleston. :headache:

Yah… that’s a problem.

If it makes you feel any better, that’s a mistake that many, many folks make.
Actually I’ve made the same mistake, but when last I did so I was directed over the Old Cooper River Bridges…

Bridge2.jpg

If you happened to headed south you were tossed onto the older 1929 span.

Bridge3.jpg

It had two very narrow Lanes and every simi-truck in the county seemed to be on it at the same time I was.
It was just a might unnerving the first time I crossed the thing…

Unintentionally…

Just for perspective, here’s how they compared right after the new one was finished.

Bridge1.jpg

You'll be proud of the men who served our country.

And we are I assure you.

Before going out to the ship, however, we stopped first to check out a possible add-on option for my minivan.

IMG_4762.jpg

Nice! With that in place…
Barry would have the Mini-Van of Doom and…
you’d have the Mini-Van of Destruction.

Just imagine the potential mayhem.

Julie wanted to try and shut this hatch after the kids went through, but the stairs made it a little difficult.

Mom wanted to shut the hatch?
Sure it wasn’t you? Sounds more like a dad kind’a notion.

Living quarters. Looks comfy, huh? And I thought the couch was uncomfortable. If, of course, Julie ever made me sleep there.

If?
Are you telling me you’ve never been banished?

Love this motto. I could use this one at my office. Just goes to show you that people got just as frustrated in the 1940's as we do today.

Grousing about Engineers is a time honored tradition.
There is graffiti on the Pyramids making the same complaints.

Here's the engine room. Is it wrong if I was looking for Hidden Mickeys on the panel wall there?

Nope… just unfortunate that you didn’t find one.

Here, Scotty felt the need...the need for speed in the cockpit.

IMG_4786.jpg

Great shot. I love the expression. :lmao:

Here Scotty is standing by the cable that planes landing on the aircraft carrier needed to catch with their tailhook in order to slow down and stop in time before they flew off the other end of the flight deck.

It’s probably due to the poor resolution of my work computer (all pictures are dark and a bit fuzzy),
but I don’t see a cable in that image.
There certainly are such on the ship though, so I may need to check this out more closely when I get home.

Whatever they pay these pilots, it ain't enough.

Agreed.

Soo...who wants to be a fighter pilot?

Being an athletic failure, I’m pretty sure they’d have washed me out of the program.
But I actually do regret not having been part of the team.

Sarah tries out the captain's chair. I think she looks a little too comfortable giving the orders around here.

Best get use to it.

Back in the hangar, they had a special Medal of Honor museum.

A must see.

There are a lot of people parading themselves around the country trying to pass themselves off as leaders and role models. They can't hold a candle to the people enshrined here.

Unquestionably

I know this is just a brief glance at the Yorktown, but it really was worth the time. How many chances do you get to walk on an aircraft carrier?

And you were worried that I’d be trashing this section. I think ya’ done good.
Certainly makes me want to go back (but I am not normal as we’ve already established).

Did y’all have time to try one of the scavenger hunts?
Given that you had other fish to fry that day, I wouldn’t have expected you to take near as much time
as that, but I was just curious.

Coming Up Next: We're on a boat!

Cool! “Check Point Sumter” perhaps?

I’ll get back to you on the lie…
I want to over-think it for a bit.

Wow, I feel like I just watched the movie, between the actual chapter update and all the quotes that followed. Jonesing for some Top Gun now. Jeff really needs to read this TR, he'd be quoting for days! Of course if we watch the movie I might have to use Meg Ryan's line which seems a bit out of place to quote here.

YAY I'm on the board. Being on west cost time well, I miss early spotting. Yes and no to my question. I wondered if air speed velocity, as stated, implied that it was asking for an average. Since he didn't use the word average.

I work for a forensic engineering firm and have an unfortunate tendency to get hung up on minutia like that...well cuz it's not minute when we are asked to be an expert witness I guess LOL! Not that I am mind you, I'm the dork who translates stuff into layman's terms for clients. Or tries. We use velocity quite a bit in reconstructing wind events (roofs) or motor vehicle accidents though in that case it's really delta force.

Poor little unladen swallow!

Great update and most unfortunate that you left Darth at home. Silly question. No smartphones with GPS? Killer on the phone battery but it can get the job done.

I love that she ran to the bakery and back. I so need to convince Jeff to do that for us!

Looks like I goofed. I had another picture I meant to include there and forgot to insert it into the post. I went back and edited the chapter to include it. That's what I get for updating the TR after bedtime. :headache:

Here's the picture that was supposed to be there:

Now you're just being mean -- posting a chapter at nearly midnight on a day when you've already posted a chapter. :sad2:

Great chapter though! Aircraft carriers are awesomely cool!!

Scotty, don't move. Your body weight is the only thing keeping that jet from falling into the water.

Man that place looks cool! I would love to spend some time there.

Is the Yorktown the only ship you can tour Maverick?
