Work was interfering with my Dis time (imagine that), so I’m only now getting around to commenting.
And away we go…
Last year, she started running and training for a 5K. She met her goal, dropped a few pounds, finished 2 5K races,
I hadn’t heard about that. Fantastic! It’s like the other folks around here that actually got up and started running.
I glad for them, but it hasn’t gotten me up off my rump to join ‘em yet.
Ok… now I feel bad…
But I happy for Julie!
and made me very proud of her.
Dude… you’d be proud of her no matter what and you know it.
She jogged all the way back holding a bag of donuts and cinnamon buns dripping with icing. In my mind, this is the greatest justification for a run ever.
Must agree…
Donut Justification!
Even better, someone else did the running for me, and I still got pastries.
Annnnnnnnd…
Sloth Justification!
If you've never driven Hwy. 17 between Pawleys Island and Charleston, you have missed out on...well, nothing.
At the last minute, we saw a teeny-tiny sign that said "Ft. Sumter Tours" with an arrow pointing left, so I pulled off a classic NJ Turnpike-style cut-off move and got over for the turn.

Ya’ did good to even make the turn.
Missing it would have been baaaad…
After making the turn off of Hwy. 17, we reached another light, with no signs directing us whatsoever.
Ummmm…
You went straight here… didn’t you?
Knowing we needed to bear right somewhere along the way to get to Patriots Point, I made a right turn...and we hit a major ramp leading us to this:
The Arthur Ravenel Bridge, on Highway 17 into Charleston.
Yah… that’s a problem.
If it makes you feel any better, that’s a mistake that many, many folks make.
Actually I’ve made the same mistake, but when last I did so I was directed over the Old Cooper River Bridges…
If you happened to headed south you were tossed onto the older 1929 span.
It had two very narrow Lanes and every simi-truck in the county seemed to be on it at the same time I was.
It was just a might unnerving the first time I crossed the thing…
Unintentionally…
Just for perspective, here’s how they compared right after the new one was finished.
You'll be proud of the men who served our country.
And we are I assure you.
Before going out to the ship, however, we stopped first to check out a possible add-on option for my minivan.
Nice! With that in place…
Barry would have the Mini-Van of Doom and…
you’d have the Mini-Van of Destruction.
Just imagine the potential mayhem.
Julie wanted to try and shut this hatch after the kids went through, but the stairs made it a little difficult.
Mom wanted to shut the hatch?
Sure it wasn’t you? Sounds more like a dad kind’a notion.
Living quarters. Looks comfy, huh? And I thought the couch was uncomfortable. If, of course, Julie ever made me sleep there.
If?
Are you telling me you’ve never been banished?
Love this motto. I could use this one at my office. Just goes to show you that people got just as frustrated in the 1940's as we do today.
Grousing about Engineers is a time honored tradition.
There is graffiti on the Pyramids making the same complaints.
Here's the engine room. Is it wrong if I was looking for Hidden Mickeys on the panel wall there?
Nope… just unfortunate that you didn’t find one.
Here, Scotty felt the need...the need for speed in the cockpit.
Great shot. I love the expression.
Here Scotty is standing by the cable that planes landing on the aircraft carrier needed to catch with their tailhook in order to slow down and stop in time before they flew off the other end of the flight deck.
It’s probably due to the poor resolution of my work computer (all pictures are dark and a bit fuzzy),
but I don’t see a cable in that image.
There certainly are such on the ship though, so I may need to check this out more closely when I get home.
Whatever they pay these pilots, it ain't enough.
Agreed.
Soo...who wants to be a fighter pilot?
Being an athletic failure, I’m pretty sure they’d have washed me out of the program.
But I actually do regret not having been part of the team.
Sarah tries out the captain's chair. I think she looks a little too comfortable giving the orders around here.
Best get use to it.
Back in the hangar, they had a special Medal of Honor museum.
A must see.
There are a lot of people parading themselves around the country trying to pass themselves off as leaders and role models. They can't hold a candle to the people enshrined here.
Unquestionably
I know this is just a brief glance at the Yorktown, but it really was worth the time. How many chances do you get to walk on an aircraft carrier?
And you were worried that I’d be trashing this section. I think ya’ done good.
Certainly makes me want to go back (but I am not normal as we’ve already established).
Did y’all have time to try one of the scavenger hunts?
Given that you had other fish to fry that day, I wouldn’t have expected you to take near as much time
as that, but I was just curious.
Coming Up Next: We're on a boat!
Cool! “Check Point Sumter” perhaps?
I’ll get back to you on the lie…
I want to over-think it for a bit.
