Open Mike Night - Everyone is Welcome

Celery here is what you want to know about the ashes....

The name dies cinerum (day of ashes) which it bears in the Roman Missal is found in the earliest existing copies of the Gregorian Sacramentary and probably dates from at least the eighth century. On this day all the faithful according to ancient custom are exhorted to approach the altar before the beginning of Mass, and there the priest, dipping his thumb into ashes previously blessed, marks the forehead -- or in case of clerics upon the place of the tonsure -- of each the sign of the cross, saying the words: "Remember man that thou art dust and unto dust thou shalt return." The ashes used in this ceremony are made by burning the remains of the palms blessed on the Palm Sunday of the previous year. In the blessing of the ashes four prayers are used, all of them ancient. The ashes are sprinkled with holy water and fumigated with incense. The celebrant himself, be he bishop or cardinal, receives, either standing or seated, the ashes from some other priest, usually the highest in dignity of those present. In earlier ages a penitential procession often followed the rite of the distribution of the ashes, but this is not now prescribed.

The Pancakes and Paczki donuts ( only sold right now too) are ate on Shove Tuesday or Fat Tuesday as someone called it. In the old days you were suppose to you up all your supplies, like sugar, flour etc. to get ready for you fast for Lent.

Fasting is only on Ash Wed. is only for the ages 14-65. No meat, and your only suppose to have one full meal and your other two meals should equal the amount of one. Fish is a big seller on this day as is Good Friday when you fast again.

Well DH's boss is taking away our benefits. :scared1: Starting Friday he is only going to pay half of DH's insurance. It would be something like $700 a month to keep the kids and myself on it. We don't even have $70 dollars extra. :confused3 Even my Ivy money(what we call what I make for babysitting) isn't enough to cover that. So I'm off tomorrow to apply for medicaid. :sad1: Hopefully we will be able to pay for myself and DH to stay on the insurance...if not I guess we won't have any. But the kids have to be covered. It's a sad day when children in America don't have health insurance. :sad2:

Hopefully work picks up soon, or I don't know what we'll do. Our rent is 925, on the super low end for here and NOT being in the ghetto. :sad2:

BTW - My Ivy money pays for WDW trips. DH's pay covers the things needed to live by and no extra. The only thing extra we have is cells and cable(we couldn't even get local channels in), which you can't cancel without huge penalties(sp?) anyway.

Actually, it's still 3:

Today is 3
wednesday is 2
thursday is 1 more day
friday we leave and drive that miserable drive
Saturday is DCA day
Sunday is Riley's b-day and DL day
Monday is DTD and favorites. The "Best of" day
Tuesday.....the drive home.
March 15 is Twinkie's real birthday

I am quoting you because you obviously need to be quoted. And it is pretty funny. Ok so it is hilarious. Which I don't know how to spell... where is Mr. Vocabulary when you need him?

Dre- Congrats on the loss!
Moo-That was awesome haiku!!!!!!! It even rhymed!
MommyP- :grouphug: I understand. Totally. I could do a whole long dissertation on heath insurance woes. But I'll just send another :grouphug:

Well it is Tuesday. My quizzes are written so you all are off the hook for questions about osmosis, diffusion, and organic compounds. Next week is photosynthesis if you want to be working ahead.

Hey! You are going to LOVE Medicaid because they pay for everything. No longer big money Rx's and office visit co-pays. When DH lost his job last Feb. we also had to go on Medicaid. Just as Norah had asthma really bad and they paid for a nebulizer and other very expensive meds. You'll be fine! His new job had pretty good insurance. So now we have that, of course.

Ask me how to spell "Photosynthesis"!!!! That was my winning word in the 6th grade spelling bee! That back was when I was smart, though. The next chapter was the Regional Spelling Bee and I LOST to M. Haag ( a BOY!!!!) who won after I missed the EASIEST word....I cockily spelled "Neighborhood" And then I stood there all smug for about 2 seconds until they said, "I'm sorry Miss UtahMama, that is incorrect" and I took my loser's walk of shame back to my cold metal folding chair, humbled. :lmao:

You tried to use those Canadian spellings again?

when my kids were growing up I always thought it was plain stupid to give up something for lent. I mean the kids had candy one day a week and we called that candy day. Usually Sundays. So I said they had to do kindness things.....be kind to others....dont talk about others, be friendly towards those who were not on the Popular list. I think my kids turned out pretty good...
I still said that to our grandkids when they were in Catholic school too. They would always ask them ......and what did you give up and KT would say nothing......I am doing the kindness thing.
I could not go with no snacking or fasting on fasting days. I need to have three snacks a day and three meals a day. may not be what I want to eat but I will do it.......I am stopping by the store on way home from the nursing home and get some carrots and haddock I guess.......fish is on the menu or maybe macaroni and cheese........something

I don't think we could possibly give up ANYTHING that would help us to understand Jesus' struggle! Kindness is way better!

We had pancakes(whole wheat), grits, scrambled and fried eggs and 1/8 pack of bacon we scrounged up. There were only 8 eggs...thankfully we had TONS of pancakes! Oh and the boys had toast too. Bread...we have lots of that. I get it from the discount store for super cheap!

I'm off to take Kaleb for his 2 year check up tomorrow! I figured I better get the kids all up to date before we loose our insurance.

DH has a check up this week too.

I'm due for my pap.(yearly) But I just had one 2 months ago! It was the last in a serious of paps from the last year. (Last year I had a bad pap, had to have a LEEP and have since have only good paps) So, I don't know if I should just skip it and ANOTHER $20 co-pay, or if I should do it anyway. :confused3 Hopefully, we'll be able to keep insurance for DH and me. He's going to find out how much that would cost us tomorrow...if it's not too much we're just going to have to use our tithe...it's the only money not going to regular bills. (thankfully we do not have outstanding cc's) Hopefully this will only be for a season. DH's boss only had to cut back because there is no work. He already fired like 8 guys just so DH and my dad and a couple others(who have been there from the beginning) could still have some work. We always had all or most of our insurance paid.

I just hope we still qualify for medicaid. There is another state program called Kid Care. Its for people who make too much for medicaid, it has small co-pays and such. But my kids ped. doesn't accept that. I can't imagine taking them to someone else. He was also MY ped. :sad1: Plus he is a Christian, so I know I never have to worry about him meddling.

UMA - Did you spell it Nieghborhood? Or Neighbourhood? How could you get that one wrong? :rotfl:

Last edited by TwinkieMama : Today at 04:52 PM. Reason: I quoted you on the riddle too. I'll tell the Lent story later... I have to leave for work soonishly.

I thought you were a SAHM? I'm confused with the quizzes and now you work at night? Am I losing it?

My neice a few years ago gave up watching TV. Well she got around that by listening to it instead in the next room. It was too funny. I think she was 8 then.

DD told me tonight at dinner she is giving up chocolate for Lent. So I had to give her a brownie tonight because she can't have it tomorrow. I told her if she gave up chocolate she won't be able to have her Dad's birthday cake. She is smart she said make him a big cookie instead with no chocolate chips. Never made a chocolate chip cookie with out chips.:confused3 Then she said instead of chocolate icing use blue. She has it all figured out.....

DS just said he was giving up going outside, DD said then he couldn't go to school and he said excatly. :lmao:

Use peanut butter chips!

Mommyp never even thought of that what a great idea!!!!

I always forget that you guys have to pay for medical over there. We pay a lot in taxes here for our health care but it is nice that we just show our health card and we get medical attention. Even when we have babies we just go into the hospital and have them and go home. Only bill would be if you wanted a private room, and insurance at work pays for that. I had two C sections and too. Wouldn't want to pay that bill there.

Maybe you should become Canadian.:rotfl2: Mind you our health system still has flaws too. We have shortages of Doctors here in Ontario too.

I have a question most any of you can probably answer. What was the origin of the joke, "Maelstrom is a Fast Pass?" and why did this original thread of people name themselves the Maelstrommers? I followed Joe's links to the previous threads and found out that this group started when a few of the trip report writers got their threads "locked" due to too much off topic socializing. That's about all the back-story I know.

I'm curious because it's interesting, but mostly because I'm working on my next two ride review episodes, and after el Rio del Tiempo (in final draft) I'm doing Maelstrom. I want that episode to be one of my better ones like the Test Track and Mission Space episodes that everyone seemed to like so much. So, since this group includes many of the original Maelstrommers, you can fill me in on any details I should know. I'll have to dedicate the Maelstrom episode to this group. :upsidedow

Hi, Steph - you didn't miss a whole lot.

Some recent highlights:

Uma's going to Disneyland soon and we're all jealous

MommyPoppins went to WDW over the weekend and posted a mini trip report

Celery recently had gastric bypass surgery and is really, really hungry and we were mean enough to talk about yummy food until she spoke up! As a consolation, she was the 100th poster on Kay's TR and had the most recent segment dedicated to her

Kay is going on vacation soon to Hilton Head Island and is hoping for her "Lucky Fourteens" goog weather

WT has been being WT

Marita and I have been procrastinating on doing chores around the house

Twinkie is trying to get her house ready to sell, so she is making up for Moo and Marita's laziness!

Nab was under the weather, but is better now and back to her page-turning duties

Grammy, Haley, Joe, Pongo, and Kimmie have popped in occasionally, but many of the old-timers are MIA

Pumba's been busy overseeing medical care for her DM and DMiL lately

What else did I miss?

Great re-cap MM! I finally posted an update to my TR. I am almost done with the cookie sale!!!! :yay:

Kay, here is the short version:

It originally came from one of Zzub's TR's. He was amazed that Maelstrom is a fastpass, because it is usually a walk-on attraction. Someone, I think 1000thHappyHaunt latched onto that and made fun of it, and it became a running joke.

Someone can probably tell it better than I can, because I suffer from cheesebrain (lots of holes....), and my storytelling quite frankly stinks, LOL.

So anyone else, please jump in with details.

Thanks, Marita. That's a good start. Hopefully someone can explain why people wanted to name themselves Maelstrommers if it's considered a rather lame ride.

BTW, I just posted on Nebo's TR. Remember he was speculating about us being twins? :rotfl2:

Kay, it was the thing that united us, the Maelstrom reference.

Again, anyone else jump in please.

Oh, I forgot to mention:

MommyP, hope it works out for you, that really sucks:hug:

Java, great day on your report, I just read it.

Later, folks...

Marita is right. The joke started with Zzub. Mel's trip report got locked up for all the chit chat so they told her to come to the CB.

Then people from her trip report and Zzub came on to the thread. And they all said the same thing they can't believe that ride has a fast pass. It was a running joke then. The thread was called Maelstrom ....is a fast pass. It too got locked up. Horsey then started another one after....with a different title.

But the joke continued if some one said Maelstrom the next poster would say .......is a fastpass. I think they were the only people to use the edit as we still do.

Thanks, bunnysmum! Loved your reply haiku!!!

MommyP, so sorry to hear about your insurance issues.

Dre - Congrats on your weight loss! It was a rocky start, but I've been doing fairly well the last few weeks.

Thanks, everyone, for the Lent information. Fortunately, no one brought paczkis into the office today to tempt me

Very interesting. So why did the Maelstrom thread get locked. This kind of thread can't be off-topic as there is none! In any case, the Maelstrommers are now no more. I feel like playing taps. :sad1: But this thread was born out of it's ashes, so the Open Mikers still include some Maelstrommers, I assume.
