(this means you, too Mr. hot-topic-of-the-week)

All of this scamming is so stupid. It is virtual and none of this holds any real value. VMK could shut down tomorrow and nothing we have in our loot (chair) would be worth a mole on a dog's behind.

There are items I would like to have that I don't that I am a little disappointed that I cannot get. Like that Haunted Mansion room, :rotfl: but I am not going to die if I don't get it, I am not going to scam to get it, I am not going to have anything of any significance if I do get it. It is a video game. You can't cash it in for money or stocks...you cannot put it into your bank account and you cannot feed your family on it.

This is so ridiculous that you people (scammers) are willing to compromise any morals or decency that you might have in order to steal something which is truly non-existent from other people. You lie and cheat in order to obtain something that only resides on the VMK server. Sadly, most of the people that you scam are children!! :furious: Innocent children!!

Additionally, if you are in a room while somebody is talking about something they should not, even if you are not participating in the conversation, you could be banned. Again, your scamming and stealing from kids would be gone anyway.

Scammers, I hope you are all proud of what you are turning VMK into and I hope each of you feel real good about yourselves each night when you lay your head down, knowing you are sucking the fun out of VMK and turning something imaginative into something where all must be on the lookout for you!

Boo - YOU STINK!!

:rolleyes1 :rolleyes1 :rolleyes1

I have told my daughter no more trading for a while. After she gets her daily points, there is not much more for her to do on VMK. The two rides they have in the Fantasyland Courtyard are kind of old news and since you have to be super careful what you say on VMK, that limits talking.

Breakdown:
Paragraphs 1-3 I completely agree.
P. 4 I have no idea what that really has to do with scamming at all.
I agree with P. 5 also.
Paragraph 6. I'd say trading is fine, but you HAVE to be there watching her. But of course I can't make you do anything. :p And I've never had trouble with having to be "super careful" when talking. Although I had a little too much fun one day and got a two hour ban, I deserved it.

Hmmm...I was not really looking for an analysis, I was really ranting to scammers.....but thanks anyway! :rotfl:

Never mind. I'm not gonna bother posting again since I can't say anything without being insulted. Please delete this post. AAAARRRRGH!!!!

Before I start, this is no rant. It's just open statements that talk about how to prevent scamming, have fun in the game in a safe manner, and how to better the future community of VMK. It's just that sometimes I may seem a little over my head.:rolleyes1 That's probably why this post is super long, LOL.

(this means you, too Mr. hot-topic-of-the-week)

First off - having that is a bit over the top. You honestly don't know both sides of that story well enough since virtual presence of his VMK avatar being somewhere or doing something is no proof of anything at all (You really never know who is behind a VMK character at any time). I am not on anyone's side, but I for sure am not going to conclusions of anything yet.

----

Thoughts about Chat:

I agree with you mostly in that letter except for the chat thing. The VMK moderation system will not ban you for not participating in a conversation. However, if the conversation involved you making even 1 comment in it that related to the topic, there is a chance of a warning. Aside from that a message is sent out to the whole room so it makes the player that said whatever feel bad. (It's a bad way to embarrass people, but it works.)

I think that you are going a little bit over the top on the talking topic with your daughter. Once your daughter finds the right friends to hang out with, talking will be no problem to worry about much. It's only in the public rooms that things go wrong because of complete strangers doing strange things, so I'd suggest that talking in a guest room (obviously an appropiate room) is completely safe. But, yes, I do understand that you want to keep her as safe as possible in the game. I suggest letting her talk to other players, but watching her while she does it is the smartest move.

My thoughts about your ' limiting talking ' point of view:

There's about 4 things that limit talking in VMK (possibly more, but I cant think of them right now since I'm a little tired right now;) ):
1) Personal Info
2) Inappropiate Behavior
3) Reference to non-childlike things
4) Disney/VMK Account information

Aside from that, there's so many safe open things to talk about in VMK. It's not that dangerous if you know how to get around the bad players - which is one of the easiest things to do. Just make sure your friends list doesn't have any bad players in it.

--------

Thoughts about scamming:

Yes, scammers are horrible people, but face it: You can't get rid of them. There's scammers in every game that involves trading or gifting and there's never a way to stop it completely. However, you can limit them to almost nobody if you prevent the scammers from scamming. What exactly do I mean by that? Don't do anything stupid that calls for a scam.

Here's an example chat log of someone falling for a scam (fake, of course):

Scammer: Hi, I'd like to trade your offer for my sparrow.
Innocent Person: Really?
Scammer: Yeah. But wait, please lock the room so nobody can come in.
Innocent Person: Why?
Scammer: Because I don't want anyone to see us trade
Innocent Person: Okay, I'll lock it
Scammer: So anyways, give me all the stuff now, and my friend will come in just a moment with my sparrow costume. He's borrowing it right now
Innocent Person: Why can't we just trade both the items at once like a regular trade?
Scammer: Because I don't want to make him give me back the costume now. I told him he could use it for a little, and I just gave it to him.
Innocent Person: okay

(trade done - scammer runs off)

Right now it probably seems amazing that someone would do that. But sadly there are people like that. Anyways - way to know it was a scam:

1) He said to lock the room, then said his friend would come in later.
2) He didn't have the sparrow costume with him.
3) He claimed he didn't want anyone to see them trade.

Honestly, I don't blame the scammers. I dislike scammers for what they do (and sometimes wish I could just teach them a lesson the hard way), but most of the time the scam could have been predicted and stopped. I've been scammed myself, and since then I've learned to watch trades and proof them. In fact, it's healthy to be scammed at least once. It gives you a sense of how to watch your items carefully.
----

Wrapping up (yeah, I know you also want to be done reading this ) :

VMK is still going to remain a safe enviornment if everyone learns to watch out for scams. If all the players become aware of scams and are able to stop it, the scammers wouldn't scam because they know they'd be caught. So next time a person is going to trade, I suggest to do the following:

1) Make sure the item being traded for is shown in the trade ALONE if you're trading for a single item. If the person adds something cheap to it, it's usually a trick.
2) If you're trading for a 4 piece costume (or 2 or 3 for a matter of fact), divide the trade into 2 if needed. Trade a fraction of the offer for 1 part, and another fraction for another part.
3) If you are trading with 6 items up, check the confirmation window for at least 30 seconds. If you're trading for more than 6 items, check all the confirmation for about a minute.
4) No unreasonable detours in trade

-------------

Just my thoughts about scamming... Please feel free to disagree with anything I wrote.
I think this is also the longest post I've ever done :rotfl:

I actually have a funny experience with a scammer.

Once, I had an offer for Inferno, A player came in my room and said that he would like to trade me for it. I agreed, but asked him to show me the pin in trade before I traded him for it. He repeatedly asked why and said "I think you are going to spam me." I thought this was hilarious! How could I scam him if I haven't even accepted his offer yet. The story continues...

Later in the trade, after continuously asking him to show me the pin, (and no, I didn't ask him to trade it to me first. I just wanted to see it in the trade window!), I finally started to put in some of my items. He then went on to tell me that he "didn't like what I was putting in the window". So basically he was going to take my better stuff and run off with it!

I'm glad I didn't fall for that one! :)

That is always what they try to do.

Well.. I've been scammed (Or attempted) 8 times. Seven scams and one attempt that failed. This hot-spot-scam-bad-hearted-guy ,named removed. is getting on peoples accounts - well that is what i hear. I don't understand how people get on peoples accounts, but I don't understand why anyone would even do it. It is just like something different - you steal a penny or five hundred dollars.. you still stole and your still a thief. People tell me this guy has gotten on some accounts, hacking them for just items that can't help you in the REAL world. If I scammed someone I get this feeling in my stomach right away - same goes when i tell a lie in the REAL world or even the VMK world.
------------------------------
now in french:

Puits..
----------------------------------

-------------------------------
now in dutch:
Goed..

and so on in other languages..

,named removed, in all languages!

Unfortunately, that's not what people have experienced. There have been people (including on this board) who have received bans for simply being in the same room where a conversation took place that they had no part of. You'll see the threads pop up from time to time.

I think that you are going a little bit over the top on the talking topic with your daughter. Once your daughter finds the right friends to hang out with, talking will be no problem to worry about much. I mean no offense, but I really think it's up to her what the smartest move for her daughter is. I think it's fine for people to disagree, but I do think we should be careful before calling someone's decision in parenting "over the top." Moving on, even appropriate guest rooms aren't always completely safe. I've had several occasions I've had to boot people in my room for coming in and causing trouble with the chat. Yes I did boot them, but by that time, everyone had already been exposed to that person's chat.

VMK is still going to remain a safe enviornment if everyone learns to watch out for scams.
I wish it were merely the scams that make people question the safety of VMK. But unfortunately, it's not. I've seen many a post where parents have either decided to heavily monitor their children or not allow their children to play VMK at all because of some of the behavior (be it sexual, racism, violence, etc). In fact, we have an entire thread that discusses racism & violence on VMK.

Anyway, I know I'm not the person you were posting to, but I do have to say I appreciate your well thought out post, even if I did disagree with some points. It's always refreshing to see a post that may disagree, but does so in a polite and tactful manner. :thumbsup2

Before I start, this is no rant. It's just open statements that talk about how to prevent scamming, have fun in the game in a safe manner, and how to better the future community of VMK. (this means you, too Mr. hot-topic-of-the-week)

All of this scamming is so stupid. It is virtual and none of this holds any real value.

While this is true, Mr. hot-topic-of-the-week is not doing what he's doing right now for the so called value of the items. He's doing it for fun and attention. As long as we keep giving him and these scammers attention like he's getting right now, the longer they will be around. Only when he stops having fun will he go away. Personally, I don't understand why staff is taking so long in banning him. Unless they have and he keeps logging in under a new IP. And just banning 1 or 2 characters won't keep him off either.

He's like the class bully. No matter how much you punish him, he finds everything funny and keeps comming back to bully the next person.

Ignore him and learn to keep from getting scammed.

Never do a multiple window trade. While there are items in VMK that people are asking for an astronomical amount of "wealth", you can eventually get these items if you're patient and smart. Keep trading lower value items for things the next value up. Eventually, you can do a 1 window trade for Stitch or Inferno. It just takes lots of time and patience.

One thing to always keep in mind, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

Right you are....well said! ;) :thumbsup2

Sad thing is many people on DIS think bay.be's are little kids about 6 or 7 in real life but they are usually older then me!Bay be's are usually the scammers that want your stuff its just there method is sometimes different(ex.they act innocent and say stuff like 'looks at lady wih big blue eyes and cries.')
I had a bay.be for 6 days and on the 6th day i showed her a pirate shirt i got(i dont use this file anymore because i gave that away thinking I'd leave VMK for good-I came back on to another account 30 minutes later.-) and she said duh duh may i try on your pirate.Little did she know I have known of the phrase 'try on' meaning the same thing as 'borrow' in scam language. But in translation into VanillaIceCream language it means 'may i have all the stuff you own that is somehow rare on a virtual game and run off with it,delete you and hope to never see you again?'
It's all a concept of using words innocently so that the victim will think you are there friend and that you'll give it all back.

For Example..When i first started VMK Everyone was Babys..So every waking second I would Hear '" Willl you Be My Mummy " I would Always Say No But 5 Seconds After That " Cries Because Lady Was Mean too me " Then I would get Attacked By All These People @_@ Anyways The Point Is Babys Try to Scam You Out Of Everything Or..They will say it was There Birthday And Then Try To Get Your Rare Out Of You The Idea Is : DONT TRUST BABYS

i completely agree, because of all the times i get scammed people just take it too far by stealing stuff and missusing someones trust..

Guys, this topic has gone a month without replies. It's a little old now. Time for me to go find the topic about not bumping old threads...
