We have been invited to a holiday open house and I was wondering what type of gift was appropriate for the hostess? You thoughts and comments are appreciated. Thanks.

Probably depends on the formality of the event. My parents have a holiday party every year, about 70 guests, children included. They have recieved wine, ornaments for the tree, other Christmas decorations, plates of cookies or other baked goods, seasonal floral arrangements, etc. But of course, the majority of people bring nothing but themselves, and that is perfectly fine with my parents.

What about something like Vanilla candles? They match everything and smell really good.

I saw the most beautiful stem glasses at dollar tree the other day they had snowflakes on them. I'm dying to buy a set to give to someone. Somebody is getting those darn things for christmas to I can look at them awhile longer.

I agree....I think they are so nice! I love to decorate with snowflakes and snowmen in the winter! I look at those glasses every time I go in our Dollar Tree! **sigh**

I vote for a nice floral arrangment. I like to give something with 'greens' in it this time of year so they get a nice flower/evergreen-y smell going on! Usually, an arrangement will stay nice this time of year right thru the New Year! Have fun!! :teeth:

We've brought a bottle of wine, maybe some chocolates or nuts or an ornament. Wine glasses are a nice gift too as well as candles.

I wouldn't do a scented anything. Some people can't tolerate those (vanilla candles make me want to throw up, personally).

I would give them a pretty ornament for the tree.

A plant (we just moved and lost several of our plants from our previous house) would be nice.

Wine or champagne

the ornament idea is cute, too

cute winter mugs and some cocoa

But what if everyone brings a bottle of wine? :confused3

It won't go bad and the hostess can enjoy it another time.

This time of year a pointsettia (caution if they have kids or pets--they are poisonous) or amarylis is almost always welcome. I LOVE paperwhites, but they are pretty strongly frangranced.

do you know how many mis-matched wine glasses I have? hehehe

yes, it's nice...but I, personally, have so many random wine glasses it's not funny. heheh

I'm always happy if a guest offers to bring a food dish to share, especially something delicious (could be homecooked or purchased). Any food item that comes in the door is something that I don't have to buy or cook.

Personally, I would call the host/hostess and offer to bring an appetizer or dessert.

Over the years, I've received (other than wine) plants, coffee mug sets, ornaments, holiday towels, soaps, liquid soap dispensers, and candles. I especially liked the belgian chocolates I got one year, and still get a little teary-eyed at the Christmas mouse holding her baby that I got at my first open house after DD (22) was born. I've also gotten fancy vinegars and oils, along with seasonings and meal (gourmet soups, breads, etc) kits.

I like the soap dispensers so much that I purchased several for my "house" gifts this year.

We just went to a dinner Saturday night and I fixed (White trash),LOL.

You get 2 8 oz bags of the sweet and salty chex mix,a bag of M&Ms,a can os cashews, and 2 bags of white chocolate morsels.

Mix everyhting together in a big bowl except the M&Ms and put it in the mirowave about 2 minutes or a little longer and then mix the M&Ms and mix it all together and then spread it out on wax paper.Let it cool for about 30 minutes and then break it up.Make sure to leave it in chunks.
I got a snowman bucket at Walmart for 1.00 and put it in that.

It takes all of 5-10 minutes to make and it is Awesome.

Hi Debbi :wave2:

I would do a Christmas type decoration for the home. You know, they have pretty ceramic or glass serving platters, a ceramic snowman or whatever Christmas item that appeals to you. Maybe some Christmas CD's just tied together with a pretty gold ribbon.

You know what I found a couple years ago at Cracker Barrel? A beautiful nativity scene lamp in an ivory with some gold trim. I bought 5 of them since they were marked down to $10 each (after Christmas) & gave them the following Christmas as gifts. Everyone has theirs out displayed every year too! (Well, this was the 2nd year...) Anyway, I would do something 'Christmasy.'

Whatever you decide, I hope you have a great time!

Merry Christmas!

Rose
