Hello Everyone! Come one, come all to my second ever pre-dining report!

My fiance and I took our first ever trip to Walt Disney World in August of 2010 and enjoyed 10 nights of Deluxe Dining. It was amazing and delicious! I will be re-visiting some of the reviews from our last trip throughout our PDR.

In 2012 we are once again headed for some more deluxe dining, this time for only 8 nights. Thats 24 Deluxe Dining credits!

Departure day is less than 3 short months away so I hope you will join me on our culinary journey.

My fiance and I are fairly different when it comes to dining tastes.

Adam is a classic meat and potatoes kind of guy. He also is obsessed with tomatoes. On our last trip he ate the mozzarella/tomato appetizer at every restaurant we ate at that offered one.

I, on the other hand, absolutely despise tomatoes. I will eat them pureed, in a sauce, or in a salsa (but will only eat the juice of the salsa and not the chunky part). I love beef, seafood, pasta, mushrooms. My favorite food group of all time is sushi, and yes I did call it a food group. I can be rather picky when it comes to green vegetables, but I am working on it.

I recently spent 4 months living in New York, so it really helped me expand my culinary horizons. I found out that I love Thai, Spanish and Indian food. We don't get a whole lot of any of these in Wisconsin, so that makes me a bit sad.

Up Next: Our Travel Day Dining Plans

Our flight is going to put us into Orland around 9AM, so by the time we get to resort using the Magical Express and settle in, we will be ready for lunch. Our first stop of the trip is going to be to.....

Earl-of-Sandwich-Logo.jpg

Earl of Sandwich

I was very depressed that we missed Earl on our last trip. I even tried to get to the NYC location while I was there, but it never worked out. This is the perfect location to have a quick but satisfying bite for lunch, and I looooove sandwiches!

We hope to be able to settle in at our hotel for a little bit before we head off to dinner.

Our first dinner of our trip will be at....

DSC09878.jpg

Flying Fish Cafe

To be honest, I am a little shocked that we didn't end up at Flying Fish on our last trip. There are so man interesting choices here as far as appetizer and entrees go. I can't wait to try the Red Snapper, as I really enjoy leeks when cooked properly. Adam will probably go for the Filet, but sometimes he will decide on something surprising.

Up Next: Day 2 Dining Plans

Even though it is not our first day, technically speaking, it is our first full day, so I am calling it Day 1.

"Day 1" starts off with a "tradition" and ends with something new.

On our first full day last year we started off at the Magic Kingdom. Even though every resource told me not to this trip around, I couldn't help myself, so it is off to the Magic Kingdom on the first real day. Nothing beats seeing that castle and walking down the middle of Main Street, USA.

We had one of our best breakfasts on property at the Crystal Palace last year, so why mess with whats not broken? I will post a snippet from my dining review of Crystal Palace from last year. One thing from last year...I was terrible about taking pictures at buffets of anything other than the characters. :rolleyes1 I don't know what my issue was, but I promise to do my best to get over it by this trip. It will help that we only have 3 buffets!

For lunch I do have an ADR for The Plaza, we will pay for this out of pocket, as I feel this is a total waste of any table service credit, but the food does look tasty! We will split something off the menu, just to tide us over between our later breakfast, which is also a buffet, and a somewhat early (at least for us) ADR.

Which will be at......Ohana. We didn't go here last year. And I know that it gets really hit or miss reviews, but I think it is something we really could enjoy. Adam loves meat and more meat, and bread pudding is one of my favorite desserts. We have no major plans this evening so it was now or never.

And now for last years Crystal Palace experience...

Our first day we were going to be at Magic Kingdom, and that meant an early 8:05 AM ADR at Crystal Palace.

First, I will start of by saying that I don't have pictures of the buffet, or the food here, just characters. It was our very first full day in Disney World, and I honestly found this breakfast to be really chaotic. So, I know its not as good as food porn, but here are a few pictures of us.

Not very exciting so I'm going to quickly transition to the food. For a buffet, this was aboslutely awesome! Really wonderful variety, I'm not sure you could find a breakfast food that you would want that was not on this buffet! It also got an extra bonus for being the only buffet we went to that offered chocolate Mickey waffles. Delish! Great selection of both cut and whole fruits, a niced mixed berry blend of raspberries, strawberries, blueberries and blackberries. Also whole strawberries with cream, yogurts, swiss and cheddar cheese in cubes, whole boiled eggs, a wonderful spiced peach cobbler, chocolate crossaints, banana bread, Pooh's puffed french toast, glazed donut holes, pastrami smoked salmon, roasted baby reds, sausage, bacon, egg frittata (which really was not a frittata at all, just scrambled eggs with sliced tomatoes and cheese on top), omelettes to order, bagels, breakfast pizza, corned beef hash. I'm sure there was in fact more, but that is all I managed to jot down.

Between the two of us, we managed to sample a little bit of everything, with the exception of the cold cereals and the likes of things that you can get at home.

Our server was Jay, and he was really excellent. We had a nice chat about Brett Favre, and he was kind enough to bring me a bottle of water, even after he had dropped the check. While I think it would have been covered by the plan anyway, it wasn't added to our bill. I will say that for the food they served here, it is mostly offerings that are hard to screw up. It is standard breakfast fare, the reason this place stands out is due to the sheer volume of dishes here.

The one issue I had was with the pastrami smoked salmon. It tasted like pastrami. And it tasted like smoked salmon, but I'm really not sure those flavors go well together. This was a really really great start to our day. Service was great, characters were great, and food was wonderful.

Summary:
2 Table Service Credits Used
54 Table Service Credits Remaining
Total Covered by Dining Plan: $44.71

On our second park day, we are going to be headed to Epcot.

We had breakfast at Akershus on our last visit and were underwhelmed, so we wanted to find something outside of the park for breakfast this trip.

Menus were scoured, dining plans were cross referenced, the transportation calculator was brought out to make sure it was possible....

And finally we decided on....

The Wave!

I really love the Contemporary Resort (hope to stay here one day). One of my favorite comfort foods is grits with cheese, so the grits with bacon and cheddar cheese here spoke to me. I think the buffet will be an obvious choice, as I want to try out the sweet potato pancakes and the eggs benedict with key lime hollondaise.

For lunch we are going to have a repeat from last trip and are going to be off to....
imagesCAZJ2T7E.jpg

We had a nice meal here on our last trip, and great service from Jill! However, I don't think that this place is ever going to be worth 2 dining credits. I see they have made some nice menu adjustments, but it isn't enough in my opinion to elevate it to a signature. So, lunch made a lot of sense. I really love mushrooms, so the filet with mushroom risotto is an obvious choice for me. I wasn't over the moon about any of the desserts here last time, as I am not a huge creme brulee lover. The cheddar cheese soup is reason enough to come back to Le Cellier. I plan to try and make this at home one night before our trip. Will post the update on that here.

Here is a little bit about our trip to Le Cellier last time....

So, next up on our culinary journey was a trip to Le Cellier. Adam was very excited, because of course, they are all about the steaks here. I was shocked that with a 6:30 PM reservation, we were seated right away. Our server was Jill, and she was AWESOME!! We really liked the youthful atmosphere with the waitstaff here. Jill was very attentive, but not intrusive, super friendly, and very knowledgable about the food here. Over the course of our whole trip, Jill got the highest tip % wise.

Anyhow, on to the food!

For beverages, I went with a smoothie, the Red Maple.
Red Maple - Raspberry smoothie with a splash of Sprite $4.29
Yummy, and refreshing!

Adam had...milk. Exciting!

The apps here didn't appeal to either of us all that much. We've had countless of varieties of beer/cheese soup at home, so while it wouldn't normally be something we would order we decided to give it a try.

No picture of the beer cheese soup here. However, in Wisconsin, we know our beer and we certainly know our cheese, and this stuff was pretty awesome. Jill recommended the Pretzel bread to go with it, and oh my! I have been trying to replicate the recipe of pretzel bread ever since.

Being the huge mushroom lover that I am, I had to go with the filet with mushroom risotto.

DisneyworldAugust2010-2543.jpg

Le Cellier Mushroom Filet Mignon - with wild mushroom risotto, white truffle and herb butter sauce $34.99

Yuummmmmmmmmmy. This did not disappoint! It was cooked a perfect medium rare, the mushroom risotto was flavorful and tender. I could have licked my bowl, but didn't.

Adam went with the New York Strip.

DisneyworldAugust2010-2545.jpg

New York Strip Steak - topped with bercy butter and served with Gruyere Yukon Gold Potato Gratin $34.99

The steak was well seasoned and properly cooked. He wished he would have asked to sub the potato gratin with my risotto as it was pretty flavorless.

Dessert was another thing that really didn't sound all that appealing for me. I'm not a fan of creme brulee because I don't like the taste of burned sugar, however I love all things maple, so I asked Jill if there was any way I could have just the creme, no brulee.

DisneyworldAugust2010-2548.jpg

Maple Creme Brulee $6.99

...and of course she delivered! Delicious custard, very creamy.

Adam, also bored with the dessert options, decided to have some fun instead and got this:

DisneyworldAugust2010-2547.jpg

Chocolate "Moose" - Chocolate Mousse rolled in Toasted Chocolate Crumbs with Maple Leaf Antlers $5.99

Final thoughts...we would consider going back again to Le Cellier. Whether or not would depend on if they added anything more exciting to the menu. If not, we would probably go back just for steaks and not use any dining plan credits.

Again, can't say enough nice things about Jill, she really made our night!

And finally, for dinner, we wanted to go somewhere we hadn't gone on our previous trip, which was tough since we dined at 6 of Epcot's table service restaurants on our last trip.

We finally landed on....

ROSECROWN_1_998.jpg

Rose and Crown

I was drawn here for the fabulous views of Illuminations, but also for the scotch egg and fish and chips. We have a 7:15 reservation, so will try to wait it out for a waterside table.

I'm in! :goodvibes

Can't wait to hear more! Especially if we'll be at the same places near the same time. popcorn::

I think this is the first pre-trip report that I've ever followed. Great job! Definitely grabbed my interest and I love that you are linking back to past trips.

..and what a cute couple. Looks like you guys have a lot of fun!!

We are going to spend the day at Animal Kingdom. Animal Kingdom was a failure of sorts when it came to dining review time last year. I chickened out on taking pictures at the buffets of anything other than the characters. :confused3

This day will actually be exactly the same dining wise as it was last year.

We are going to start off with breakfast here...

DSC00561.jpg

This was one of my favorite breakfast buffets last trip. They had a wide variety of unique options. We also did Boma's breakfast buffet, and while I prefer the buffet at Boma a bit more, it is just to complicated to get to and then still make it to the park for rope drop.

Last year we had lunch at Yak and Yeti. My camera had died on the safari earlier that morning, so no pictures of that meal either! I know, very sassy. We will do better this time I promise.

Then we are headed to my favorite restaurant in all of Disney World. First...let me say that I looooove sushi. I may have mentioned that in a previous post, but, just to confirm, I looooove it.:love:

And I do believe that California Grill does have the best sushi on all of property, so that is where we shall go.

We did have a less than stellar server last time, but I am 100% positive that was just an isolated incident and have no concerns about this trip.

Here is a little bit about our last visit there...

I came to Cali Grill with ONE thing in mind. SUSHI! And it did not disappoint. On a past trip to Disneyland, I had the privilege of dining at Napa Rose. A girlfriend of mine went with me, and it was at the time, and is still to this day, the best meal I have ever had. I was hoping that this would maybe compare to it, and it just simply doesn't. While both focus on California cuisine, I quickly realized it was two very different types of California Cuisine. Napa Rose was much more like Artist Point was, so they really just don't compare.

Our server was Erika. Not sure what it was about her, but she really just rubbed me the wrong way from the get go. She just came off as very abrasive to me. She did however, make a very nice wine recommendation for me, so it temporarily earned her some points back.

Now, I will say that I completely understand that wine by the glass in a restaurant suffers from a severe severe price markup. But for the $16 I spent on one glass of Selbach Riesling, I could have bought an entire bottle of it at the wine shop in Germany, if I chipped in another $2 and the tax. And if you pour the bottle correctly, you should get a total of 4 glasses from it, etc, etc. Pointless rant now over. So, chalk it up to an inexperienced wine drinker, but I really felt kind of cheated by this. And of course, I didn't know this at the time, so it did not detract from my enjoyment of the meal.

So, on to the actual food.

For apps, Adam had Hearts of Romaine - with Roasted Garlic Dressing, Marinated Anchovies, Olives, Aged Parmesan, and Croutons $11

DisneyworldAugust2010-2484.jpg

So, kind of like a classic Caesar, but called something different. It got two thumbs up.

I had the well reviewed Spicy Kazan Roll - crab, shrimp, bay scallops, tuna and fireball sauce $22

DisneyworldAugust2010-2483.jpg

Um. Oh my God. This was really all that and a bag of potato chips, greatest thing since sliced bread, all of that. DELICIOUS. Just so so so so good. Amazing. But again, a HUGE portion for appetizer. Still, well worth the $22 price tag in my opinion. A similar roll at our local sushi place goes for $12 and is no where near the quality or freshness.

And for entrees, Adam had Grilled Pork Tenderloin - with Goat Cheese Polenta, Button Mushrooms, Zinfandel Glaze, and Sage $34

DisneyworldAugust2010-2486.jpg

Beautiful pork, which I usually don't care for, and creamy polenta. A very nice, hearty dish. I for one, appreciated the fact that this came with polenta instead of a potato.

I of course, went with Yoshie's Deluxe Sushi Platter - maki and nigiri $28

DisneyworldAugust2010-2485.jpg

EVERYTHING was amazing. However, the one in the lower left hand corner was octopus. Now, I certainly meant no disrespect for the chef by not eating it, but I learned on a previous sushi excursion that Octopus is not for me. Flavor wise, or texture wise, it just won't go down for me. So, despite gobbling up everything else on the plate, and I mean EVERY bit, I actually was scolded by the waitress for leaving the octopus. Not in the joking way either. In the way that I got a lecture explaining that Yoshi was one of the most respected sushi chefs in the country and how insulting it was for me to send sushi back to the kitchen. I explained that I certainly meant no disrespect by doing so, I just know that octopus is a bit too adventurous for my taste and that the chefs skills were evident by the amazing sushi that I just devoured. If she was joking, she took it too far. I had to ask her to please, take my plate away, and bring out the dessert menu for us.

Dessert was also stellar here. We both went with the Valrhona Chocolate Cake - Warm chocolate cake w/molten center, cherry chambord ice cream, sweet whipped cream $13

DisneyworldAugust2010-2487.jpg

A really nice dessert that was actually made by the delicious ice cream that accompanied it.

Overall, the view for Wishes, and the over all amazing food made up for the fact that our service experience was pretty much ruined by the lecture I had to endure. Also, while Erika was not the only server to commit the faux paus, it really irritated me when we had a server remind us that gratuity was not included on the dining plan. And Erika mentioned it to us twice. Because apparently we couldn't determine this from the two receipts that state this, as well as the little flyer they insert with the check. While I don't doubt that this may have been overlooked by folks in the past, whether it be honest mistake or intentional, I felt it rude and somewhat awkward to be reminded of this at almost every meal.

Overall though, looking forward to repeating a meal here in the future.

On the 7th we are headed off to Hollywood Studios.

I was originally planning to have breakfast at the Pepper Market before we hit the parks, but I decided I wanted to try out some place new instead.

So we are headed off to the Wilderness Lodge to enjoy breakfast here....

whisperingcanyon1.jpg

They had me at BBQ Eggs benedict.

We will make our way to Hollywood Studios and then have lunch at 50's Prime Time Cafe. Here is a little bit about our visit there from last year...

So day 4 was our very first day at Hollywood Studios (which for the record, is my favorite Disney park on US soil). We had no breakfast reservation for that day, because we used some snack credits at the Main St. Bakery the night before. I had the warm banana bread pudding, and Adam had the Walnut Brownie ($3.99 each). Sorry, no pics. Both were delicious, even mine which was obviously no longer warm. I could have eaten banana bread pudding every day if allowed.

Anywho...we had an 11:15 reservation at 50's, which happened to be right when it started to downpour (again!).

Our server was Tom, and he really wasn't very good, but the server at the table next to us really made up for him.

For starters, Adam had this:
DisneyworldAugust2010-2296.jpg

Chicken Noodle Soup - Hearty mixture of chicken, vegetables, and egg noodles $6.49

This is probably one of the best chicken noodle soups I have ever had (except for ma's of course). Great chicken flavor, tender veggies and well seasoned.

And I had this:
DisneyworldAugust2010-2295.jpg

Aunt Annie's Seafood Salad - Lump Blue Crab, Bay Scallops, and Shrimp tossed in Citrus Vinaigrette served on seasonal Greens $9.99

All I can say is YUMMMMMMM! I'm actually salivating remembering this dish. If you don't like seafood you will hate this, but if you do, its really a great preparation. The vinaigrette on this was light and refreshing and the lemon squeezed over the top really enhanced the seafood.

And for our main course, Adam had this:
DisneyworldAugust2010-2299.jpg

Caesar Salad with Chicken - Romaine lettuce tossed with Caesar dressing, grated parmesan cheese, garlic croutons topped with sliced grilled chicken $12.99

There isn't too much to say about this dish. The greens were crisp and well washed, the dressing was good. Pretty hard to screw up a Caesar salad.

And I had this:
DisneyworldAugust2010-2297.jpg

Cousin Eric's Char-grilled Chicken Sandwich - marinated chicken breast topped with cheddar, grilled onions, barbeque sauce, lettuce and tomato on a Kaiser roll, with a house salad or french fries $13.49

Another stellar dish. I don't know what the marinade used for this was, but it was good. The chicken had excellent char flavor, and was moist and wonderful. Well carmelized onions, great BBQ sauce and fresh bun. I also got a caesar salad and pickle with this. Really nice lunch here.

And for dessert...I forgot to take pics. Really sorry about this! Somehow, I did get pics of us with the dessert menu:

DisneyworldAugust2010-2301.jpg

Adam got a hot fudge sundae $4.99. Again, not something you can really screw up, but it was yummy and came with all the traditional fixins.

I had the No Sugar Added Cheesecake - topped with fresh whipped cream and strawberry sauce $5.49. I actually think this was a raspberry sauce. There is no crust on this, just cheesecakey goodness. I have to say, as far as sugar free desserts go, this is a really great option and was tasty and a HUGE portion.

Like I said, our service here was really really lacking, but the food was a great rebound. I would definitely go here again for just food alone.

Total TS Credits used: 2
Total TS Credits remaining: 44
Total amount covered by Dining Plan: $55.73

For dinner, I had originally planned to go to Yachtsman Steakhouse, but then Disney released the 2012 Dining Plan info. We decided to take advantage of the new restaurants on the list and now have a reservation at Wolfgang Puck's Dining Room.

Their sushi sounds amazing, as does the Lobster Risotto. I can't wait to try it out!

I'll be at DHS on 3/7 ... but with a dinner ADR at 50s! Their food was sooo yum last year! Our server was just a normal server -- was fine for a diner quality, but horrible for a theme quality.

Perhaps we'll see each other in passing!

I've not eaten upstairs at WGP, but I swear by their downstairs dining. Their sushi is sooo yummy! Now I'm looking forward to your TR so you can tell me all about it! :goodvibes

I am with you on sushi...and that will be our dinner tonight actually. Cali Grill looks amazing and I can't wait since we are going to dine there on our Oct trip. What time should we aim for with our ADR so we can catch Wishes?

I have had sushi at Wolfgang Puck's and it was really good, but it was quite a few years ago now. I hope it's as good for you!

Your plans sound wonderful
I love that you have put your previous reviews into your pre-trip dining report
Looking forward to reading all about it :)

We ate downstairs on our last trip to! I got the sushi sampler and it was amazing!

We went an hour before Wishes started on our last trip, and got an amazing four-top right next to the window. It was perfect timing as we had just finished our entree by the time Wishes started, so we watched, had dessert and left. This year when I booked at 180+ 10 1 hour was not available, so we are there 40 minutes before. This shouldn't be a problem, it just means we might have to go outside rather than watch from the table. It may work better that way, as you do catch quite a bit of glare still on the windows inside.

PS, I LOVE your signature, so true!

Thank you! I am looking forward to all the research!

So, of course as soon as I wrote about it, I had to change it. I had the entire day off of work Monday (never a good idea) and had absolutely nothing planned with my day except for organizing product shelves for my side business (an even worse idea) so, I started oogling over all the online menus. Now, it wasn't like we had been to Disneyworld decades ago, but a lot has certainly changed since last August. Can I say last August anymore? It is after January 1, so maybe it is last, last August? Neither here nor there. But, after looking at Prime Times menu, I noticed that all of the sandwiches have been removed. Big bummer since that is the only thing I would eat there. I don't do fried chicken (only thing my mother knew how to cook when I was younger) or pot roast or meatloaf. So, I started looking for alternate options. I was pretty underwelmed. Sci Fi is a definite no, and I didn't want to go to a different resort. I decided to check out the menu for Mama Melrose (we had a so so experience there last trip) and decided to go for the change. Nothing was particularly bad about our meal last time, but nothing was that great either. But, worth another shot.

In much less interesting news, I also changed our OOP lunch at The Plaza to an OOP lunch at The Grand Floridian Cafe, much more interesting sandwich choices and only a monorail ride away!

We have another Hollywood Studios park day planned today.

No breakfast reservation, so we will either go to the Pepper Market or Cafe Rix. I really wanted to try out the Maya Grill for breakfast, but it doesn't look like that is going to be an option for us.

Then we have a lunch reservation planned at the Hollywood Brown Derby for the Fantasmic package. I am really looking forward to this meal!

We also don't have a dinner reservation for this day, but we will either use up some snack credits or try out one of the counter service restaurants in the park, maybe Fairfax Fare. Does anyone have any good Counter Service recommendations?

I'm completely drawing a blank on CS at DHS. Sorry.

Haven't tried Brown Derby yet, but read some good reviews lately.

We will be there the same time as you! Looking forward to reading your reviews. We love Cali Grill and Whispering Canyon as well. I'll have to get our ADR list and PTR up before we go. We will be staying at FQ. Getting excited! Almost time!

We enjoy the Backlot Express every trip for our DHS CS credit. :goodvibes

However, I think we're considering Starring Rolls Cafe this year.
