Since we can't afford Disney this year, we are hoping to take a nice 3-5 day vacation in July within a 3 hour drive of Toronto. We have a 4.5 yr old DD and a 1.5 year old DS. We already spend quite a a bit of time in the Haliburton Highlands at parents cottage, but wanted to do a get-away that would interest the kids....lots of room to play/run, swim, kid-friendly etc. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks,

What about Niagara Falls (if you don't want to go up north this time?) There's a long biking/rollerblading/walking trail between Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-lake. Families spend many hours out in the sunshine on these trails. There's the butterfly conservatory which seems to mezmorize children! There are many hotels/motels, for every budget with pools. The falls themselves are always fun and there's maid of the mist, journey under the falls. If you like souvineer shopping, there's Clifton Hill and Lundy's Lane. We go to Niagara twice a year. It's a great getaway (we're in Kitchener), yet not too far.

Two different summers we have spent a week at Wigamog Inn which must be fairly close to your parents' cottage. They have a morning program for children of all ages, another program most afternoons, an outdoor pool, 2 indoor pools, and of course the lake, which is right across the road. Both of my children love it there. We first went when they were 2 and 5 and then again the next year when they were 3 and 6. In the evenings they have lots of family activities - a magician, karaoke, etc. The normal plan includes your room, breakfast and dinner. The whole place is very laid-back and oriented to families. I was also wondering whether you wanted to venture as far away as Ottawa? There are lots of things there for children to see and do.

Cheers,

Wheels Inn down in Chatham is supposed to be a kids paradise. My neighbour goes every year. It is a Best Western Hotel with everything a kid could want to do. It is fairly costly but you can get better rates during the week for a couple of days. Here is their website if you'd like to take a look. www.wheelsinn.com. Have a great time whatever you decide to do!

I'll put a good work in for my area...Brockville,
Gananoque.....Kingston...Ottawa, lots of neat things to do around here....boat cruises, museums, parks, so many things and it is only 3.5 hours form Toronto! If you want more info about the stuff around here feel free to e-mail me!

Sand Banks Provincial Park is located in Picton, near Belleville. The beach is GREAT - all soft sand and sandbars - my kids love it and compare it to the beaches of Florida. Since we only get there once a year - this is like a pseudo Florida vacation for them!

(1) Port Elgin on Lake Huron is always fun. I can't remember the name of the hotel we stay at but it's across the street from the big strip mall. It has an indoor pool and whirlpool. Lake Huron is cool but the waves are nice and big. There are several other fun day trips from Port Elgin. Sauble Beach is about 10 minutes away and they have tons of fun things, amusement park, beach, go-kart etc.,.

(2) NIAGARA FALLS! You can NEVER go wrong with the falls! Take a side trip to Niagara-on-the-Lake and visit the Winnie the Pooh store THAT IS RIGHT, THEY HAVE A SHOP THAT IS ALL POOH! We like staying at the Americana Resort in NF. It has an indoor and outdoor pool, whirlpool, gym, indoor playground and outdoor playground, great room service too! In August they have a Friendship Festival and a couple years ago WINNIE THE POOH AND FRIENDS were in NF! It was great! An entire POOH festival. Their was a stage show and dd was picked to go on stage with POOH! IT WAS FREE!

Also in Niagara Falls around the third weekend in November is the start of the WInter Festival of Lights. Disney California sends up tons of characters. Their is a couple of character breakfasts and a Disney show. We've done it for 4 years old a role! Where else are you going to get an AUTHENTIC Disney character breakfast in Canada! It only costs $42.00 for dh, dd and myself (baby is free)!

I've never heard of Disney at Niagara Falls. Sounds like a great time. When do tickets for the show and character breakfasts become available? Where would I find out about this. I guess the Chamber of Commerce should have something.
