Can you order just milkshakes at the Sci-Fi or do you have to order food, too? Yes, I know the server will hate us! Dh really wants to go there to see it, but we have other plans to eat that day, so we thought maybe we'd just stop for a snack. Should I still get ADR's?

We never order anything but milkshakes and onion rings. Yes, the servers hate us. Do we care? No. We tip generously anyway. I have to say, we're probably even giving up doing that since there are much better shakes to be had at Ghiradhelli in Downtown Disney. But, if you want to see what SciFi is like, then feel free to show up and order just milkshakes. I'd go after the busy lunchtime and before dinnertime. Enjoy!

They have a bar there I think, so couldn't you essentially just walk up to the bar and order one to go?

Go to the bar inside 50's PT the will serve up milkshakes! (They have the best shakes too!):thumbsup2 :goodvibes

If you have money they will make you anything .:thumbsup2
I would go to Prime time they have good P& J Milkshake accoring to my boys.

Your boys are right! On a solo trip, I went in 50s Prime Time, sat at the bar and ordered a PBJ milkshake (which I'd heard about on this board). It was delicious, though pretty rich. :thumbsup2

Sorta OT but is it truly a bar or more like a lounge where kids might be welcome? I have been thinking we might want to try a PB&J shake without eating there but was concerned about whether I could have my 5-year-old in the bar atmosphere. I know you can get them to go but reports have said they short-change you greatly (like, use a kid's cup) but charge you full price.

At 50's, the bar area is in the lounge. It's in the same room where you wait to be seated for an ADR, and I think it would be fine for children.

I agree. I've seen kids sitting with their parents at the bar, having milkshakes or sodas.

I would feel funny about seating my kids at the bar, but that is just me. There are really no small tables or anything, so I'm thinking you would have to get it to go since most of the couches, etc. would be taken up by people waiting for their table to be called.

Most bars at Disneyworld are nothing like bars in real life. They're really pleasant places where folks can get a drink (alcohol or non-alcohol) and snack -- and families can feel very comfortable bringing children with them. The only exceptions I can think of would be the bars at the Swan/Dolphin (more clearly directed to adult and convention traffic), and Rix at CSR (also more adult and convention oriented). I might also put the bar on the second floor of GF in that category. Aside from that, all are quite family oriented -- most especially the "bars" in the theme parks.

As for Prime Time Cafe -- the "bar" area is full of kids all the time and there is no particular sense that it is a bar, as opposed to a family hang out.

However, the original poster said her husband wants to see Sci-Fi. A milkshake at the "bar" at 50's Primetime doesn't help with that goal.

I second what ElizabethB has said. We've taken our kids to Victoria Falls at AK/AKL several times. We've ordered them kids drinks while my husband and I enjoyed cider.

I dont mean to hijack your post here but I wanted to ask if we just go into Primetime and order milkshakes, what kind of grief will we get from the waitstaff there? I hear that can be very "annoying" with how much they play the part.

I totally agree - we have started finishing up a half day at the Studios by getting a PB&J shake to take out - fantastic (and I'm not a peanut butter fan!) :woohoo:

I think as long as you have a reservation ahead of time and tip generously you have the right to get a table just like anyone else who has a reservation. I too was thinking about doing the same thing because we like to eat an early dinner around 4:30 and i would not be at HS for that long.
