We recently returned from a one week stay at the Animal Kingdon Lodge. As just about everyone has mentioned, the lobby is breathtaking. The works of art are museum quality and the representatives from Africa are happy to talk about their homeland and culture. The resort is quite large and some rooms are a significant distance from the lobby and bus stop to the parks. Rooms closer to the lobby suffer from (usually noisy) traffic passing by constantly. We were assigned a room in one of the buildings jutting off of the main arc of buildings facing the Sunset savannah. This did offer a good combination of proximity to the lobby yet being off of the main traffic flow. We were given a "complimantary" upgrade to a deluxe room. This translates into a few extra square feeet in the room and not much else. The downside is the deluxe rooms are on the 5th floor, so you are somewhat farther from the animals. I would have preferred a 2nd or 3rd floor room. The rooms are nicely decorated, a bit dark, with comfortable beds. The bathroom is too small and the door to the toilet awkward to close. And watch out when flushing the toilet...it scared the heck out of my little girl it's so loud and forceful. House keeping was adequate. If you would like a coffee maker you need to call housekeeping to have one delivered and it only includes the first day's supply of coffee. Kind of skimpy for a hotel that charges more than $250 a night. Refrigerators are available for rent for a $10 per day fee. We rented one and found it to be very worthwhile for having breakfast, snacks and drinks in the room. Food at the resort is EXPENSIVE. It is well worth it to stop at a grocery store on the way to the hotel and stock up on drinks, bottled water, coffee and snacks. And Disney doesn't seem to care if you do this, no one gave us a second look when we checked in with grocery bags from Publix. The restaurants at the hotel include Jiko which is only open for dinner, Boma, a buffet open for breakfast and dinner and the Mara which is fast food serving all day. Jiko is an excellent dining experience, but rather expensive. We never did try Boma, so I can't comment on the quality. The Mara is decent, especially the "grab and go" fruit plates and wraps. Unfortunately, it's your only option for lunch if you stay at the resort. The pool area is quite large with sloped zero entry section and a small slide. The water is heated to the mid 80's so it's comfortable to swim even on cooler days. There are two hot tubs as well. There are many observation places scattered throughout the hotel to observe the animals and helpful guides at most places. Storytelling is done every evening around the fire just off of the lobby. I was disappointed in that they told the SAME story every night. Come on, isn't there more than one African story?? Activities are available for the children at scheduled times during the day including music, games, animal information, and night vision. Children can earn a bead for some activities and make a necklace or bracelet. The gift shop has a wide variety of unique African handicrafts as well as the usual Disney souveniers. Beer and wine are also sold and are much less expensive than from the restaurants or room service. Transportation to the parks is by bus. The buses run about every 15 - 20 minutes. Commute time varies from 5 minutes to the Animal Kingdom to almost 20 minutes to the Magic Kingdom. If you are going to another resort, your best bet is to rent a car and drive. Otherwise you have to switch buses at Downtown Disney. Guests staying at the resort park free at any other resort or park. Overall, it is a sophisticated resort which is still family friendly. The setting is it's best feature, it's remote location and lack of food service options is it's worst feature.

I'm happy to answer any questions
:D

I just wanted to point out that you have other options than switching busses at Downtown Disney to get to other hotels. I imagine that is the worst way to do it. We took a bus to any of the theme parks when we needed to get to another hotel and then hopped on the bus or monorail that serviced that hotel. I understand the busses to and from DD take a long time due to the numerous stops they make. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

You're right about those bathroom doors. They are awkward, huge and heavy! The swing of the door barely misses the toilet, forcing you to step around to the other side and sort of squeeze yourself in between toilet and tub in order to close the door. That was a poor design.

I get the impression you didn't care for AKL. Is that correct?

Glad you enjoyed your stay! AKL has never ceased to amaze me!

And yes - my 27 year old DH gets a kick out of the "turbo flush" toilets at AKL too. hehehe. Every time he went in there I'll hear:

"One
Two
Three
TURBO FLUSH!!!"

and then he'd flush. too funny.

Sorry my report gave you the impression we didn't like the resort. We did, I just felt that a few improvements could be made and tried to make my report as factual and even-handed as possible. Housekeeping was just adequate, certainly not as good as I've found at similarly priced hotels. And I wish the excellent restaurants (Jiko and Boma) offered a lunch option for days you don't go to the parks. But overall, it is a fantastic resort, unique and appealing to both adults and kids.

And yes I do realize that you can get to other resorts by going to the closest themepark, but at this time of year the parks close fairly early and it's just quicker and simpler to drive directly. For example we drove to the Boardwalk, had dinner there then walked a short distance to teh international gateway of Epcot to watch Illuminations. Afterwards we caught the boat to the Boardwalk, walked across the street to our car and were home (the AKL) in a matter of minutes. Otherwise we would have had to take the bus to either the front entrance of Epcot, and walk through the park to get to dinner and back to the bus or take the bus to Downtown Disney then to the Boardwalk and reverse. AKL's remote location just makes it a bit more difficult to get around that some of the other resorts, but the atmosphere more than compensates for it. But people should be aware that if they want quick and easy access to all the resorts and parks, another resort may be better for them.

We have also stayed at AKL and it is our favorite so far. We were upgraded to a Savannah view room and are now spoiled. I would like to add that Mara does not open until 6 am so there is no coffee to be had until then (unless you request a pot for your room) and there is no where to take a walk except laps around the pool as the hotel is surrounded by savannahas except for the land directly in front for the entrance. We used the transfer at DTD alot as we were also there during limited park hours. The DTD bus had to stop at Typhoon Lagoon before the DTD stop so only one extra stop. You explained everything perfectly IMO.

Also Hello  from another DISer from McKinney........ :D

So transferring at DTD doesn't take too long? I had read that wasn't the best way to go. If my post offended, I'm truly sorry. I loved our stay at AKL and hope to go back. Every minute saved travelling is a minute more enjoyed elsewhere. There is so much we didn't get to do. I'm already having to scale back on our imaginary itinerary for next year. LOL.

after most parks have closed (which, is early this time of year) DTD is the ONLY way to get back to AKL "after hours"

Think of a long dinner at California Grill at the contemporary....dinner is over at 8:30.
MK and MGM are closed, Epcot closes in a half hour. What do you do?

Easiest way then is head to DTD and transfer from there. (There are more DTD buses running that time of night then TTC).

Actually I think Mara is reasonably priced (for Disney that is). We paid an average of $15 per day for breakfast for 4, excluding drinks (which we kept in a cooler in our room).

We had a car, and getting around was no problem; it's just an extra 5 minutes to get any WDW location. If you're going to a theme park, bus service from AKL seems to be better than most resorts. If you're going resort to resort by bus, it's a pain no matter where you stay.

What a great informative post - thanks for sharing :) We are staying there in september and I cannot wait. So Jiko is worth a try? We are definately planning on doing breakfast at Boma. :sunny:

I would certainly give Jiko a try. The food was very well presented and exceptionally tasty. Best of all it was different without being weird. The wine list is very nice, all South African wines. The service was on par with any 4-5 star restaurant I've eaten at. The waiter was very knowledgable. The setting is beautiful.

When else will you ever get to eat at such a unique restaurant?

I would encourage those staying at other resorts to try Jiko as well, with the added bonus of seeing the AKL!
