Why are one way car rentals so expensive? I need to take a rental car from an airport two hours away to return to my home. I can return the car close to my house; but it is almost $100 for just one day; why so high?

Is there a cheap way around this? I will pay some of my friends to come and pick me up for that price. Any ideas?

I don't know what rental company you are looking at but have you tried Hertz. They have a program called Local Edition that allows you to do what you are trying to do.

When I tried Hertz, it was also over $100 (I think 109) for a one day, one way rental. Ouch

This is two different things at Hertz. Did you look at a local edition location? I just tried it for my area and a one way rental wasn't very expensive. Click on the link for neighborhood location on the reservations page. Are you a member of AAA? They give good discounts for AAA members.

Thanks for all of you suggestions and I hadn't tried the ressie that way, but it still comes up $109 for a one day.

I didn't know some of the "national" car rental companies don't allow one-ways out of state. I have an Enterprise 15 minutes from house, but unfortunately I need a car to go from Kentucky to Nashville, TN. They don't allow drop-offs in other states.

Hertz is about 45 minutes away from me; this is the company giving me $109 per day.

My next option is to drive 1 hour and 15 minutes one way to get one from Budget assuming their cheaper.

Did you call the Enterprise location from which you'll be renting the car? Their website says they don't generally allow one-way rentals, but it's up to the individual office.

I have rented several time from our local Enterprise office, but they tell me it's a different ownership out of Kentucky. So still no way out.

Have you tried Budget? I have used them several times for one way rentals out-of-state and have always found them to have the best rate. Good Luck!!
