One time use point purchase.

I am short 26 points for a trip in December. Even if I do the OTU I will still be short 2 points! BUMMER!!!

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I have one more question about the OTU points. I am renting some points to someone and they want to stay an extra night. I was thinking I could just buy some OTU points and have them pay the $15/point. I am borrowing points to make the reservation but I will still have 4 points set aside to bank for one of my future reservations. It just hit me that they won't allow me to buy extra points if I still have points I can borrow. Is that true?

You can purchase them, even if you have points that can be borrowed. They help prevent borrowing. They can only be used to book at the 7 month window, though, in case you didn't know that.

You can buy OTU points if you still have points you can borrow.

When member services first started selling OTU points, I was curious so I asked if you could also buy OTU points and apply them to a reservation you were making even if you didn't have to borrow points to make the reservation. I was told the answer was yes. I can't tell you whether this is actually the case because I've haven't bought OTU points.

In 2011, I tried to buy them even though I had points to use in my current uy and they wouldn't let me. But, I have a feeling, based on others experiences, that I got bad advice.

Ok, so this makes me wonder if you CAN buy them to keep from having to borrow, but you CAN'T buy them if you have points in your current UY. Does anyone know?

From a conversation I had with a CM. If you have current year points to use or you have already borrowed points and they are not allocated (i.e. you cancelled the reservation) them you cannot buy OTU points. If you have used all your current UY points and not borrowed points from next year you can. The rub seems to be if you have already borrowed points that are not allocated to a reservation. From what I was told the gist is to keep you from borrowing points not make you borrow them.

I think this is to protect members from themselves, lol. If you have borrowed points in your account, they will expire at the end of the use year. Generally, it isn't wise to buy more points that will also expire at the end of the use year if you have those borrowed points available to use.

If a member has a reservation in mind for the borrowed points (perhaps to use the home resort booking period), she can make the reservation that will use the borrowed points and then call to buy OTU points for the reservation for which she didn't want to use the borrowed points. One really needs to know what one is doing / risking when doing this - if not, there's a good chance that member will end up losing points.

You can definitely buy in instead of borrowing. I just did that. Only had 5 banked points in the UY and did not want to borrow from the next so rue shed the other 11 I needed. The time I couldn't I still had current UY points that I was saving for an 11 month booking and wanted to buy the OTU points for the reservation i was booking for two months later. They said that as long as there were current up points, I couldn't buy. So, when my 11 month window opened up for another trip, I was forced to borrow because I no longer had enough points to book.
