I am considering making a reservation for December. Family members may join us and if so I will need a 2 bedroom villa. I will be 20 points short for the reservation I want. How does the one time point use purchase through DVC work. What is the maximum number of points you can buy? Cost per point? Do you pay buy credit card at time of ressie?

One time use points can't be used for reservations still in the home resort booking window. They can only be used at the 7 month mark. You can buy a maximum of 24 points at $15 per point. Yes, you pay at the time you buy them. I used my Disney Visa.

Thanks. I wonder why they don't allow it at the 11 month??

I can think of a couple of reasons for this.

First, it makes managing the program much easier. No matter which points DVC has lying around (BLT, AKV, SSR) by restricting it to 7 months out or less, any points can be sold for use with any reservation. I might be booking BLT 7 months out but they can sell me OKW points to complete my reservation. They don't have to have BLT points in stock.

Second, it makes it more fair. For example, I suspect they have more AKV points available than BCV points. If I'm booking AKV 11 months out and need a few more points I would almost always be able to get them. If you are booking BCV 11 months out and need a few points, you would almost always be out of luck. I can imagine the complaints MS would get!

Because they don't have a home resort assigned to them.

Technically the points do have a Home resort. They would have to come from the Developer's inventory of unsold points.

Issue is that DVC doesn't want to--and in some cases, cannot--make points available for every Home resort. Thus they can't offer 11 month bookings with the OTU points.

Right now they are most likely pulling the OTU points from Aulani or Animal Kingdom Villas. (Could also be other resorts like OKW, Vero or HHI for which DVD has a surplus due to ROFR or foreclosures.)

Some resorts like BCV and VGC are in short supply. Whenever Disney reacquires points at those locations, they would much rather sell the entire contract for $100+ per point rather than piecemeal for $15 each.

Don't the purchased points have to be used in the UY they were purchased for? For example, I am getting ready to buy 11 points for a September 2013 trip. I have a June UY. So would the points be in my June 2013 UY which would make them expire May 31, 2014?

does anyone know if someone else can buy them and transfer them to you. I let a friend borrow some points and now I need them back but she doesnt have them in her current use year. could she buy them and transfer them to me? I will also need to buy a couple to make up the difference.

It's not clear whether you get points that match the UY of your own points or any points that are valid for your travel dates. For example, Oct 2012 UY points would work for a Sep 2013 reservation. The rules don't state what happens if you cancel a trip booked with OTU points, specifically how long you have to use them for something else.

I'd love to know the answer to that one. The way it is written they may be literally one time use. Meaning the use is for the booking and that if the booking is cancelled they are just lost. Then again they could be treated as banked or borrowed and follow your use year and the booking use year. Heck what if your ressie had points from 2 contracts with different use years.,would it go to the shortest time to expire or the longest?

I also wonder what the dvc travel insurance would cover on those points, as "you" wouldn't have paid the dues on them that would be covered by the insurance on owned points.

My take on it has been if I buy them, and I have, I assume they can't be used again and am prepared for that if I had to cancel or rebook. Conservative approach but safe.

When we bought 3 One Time Use points last year, I confirmed with Member Services that if I canceled the reservation I would still have use of the 3 OTU points until the end of my Use Year. Although I don't know this for sure, I suspect that DVC sells points from its inventory that match the buyer's Use Year.

Good to know. I bought some OTU points a few months ago and never thought to ask that question.

Or as it's been posted before the reason they're available @ the 7 month window is because they' re not resort limiting. Meaning @ that point you can use them anywhere there's availability.

When Disney first rolled out One Time Use Points, I don't remember if this was listed as a requirement when buying OTU points. Does this mean that if a DVC Member has in their account only resale points purchased after March 21, 2011, that they cannot purchase OTU points? If so, this would be like resale-only Members being denied access to the Members only cruise.

The restriction only applies to the Disney Collection and Adventurer Collection.

Yep any owner can buy them for any use that they are qualified to use.

So if a direct purchaser was 10 points short to book their cruise they could use the OTU points. If a resale purchaser is 10 points short for their DVC stay they can use OTU points.
