And I'm not sure how to handle this. His room was thoroughly cleaned about 2 weeks ago and I know it was in his room then. DS has about 4 different boys that stop by the house and now it is missing. Do I ban anyone from going to his room, limit it to just the few I know real well, or what? I will not come right out and accuse someone of the theft. so how do I protect DS's stuff from here on in?

This is exactly what I am scared of with the Nintendo DS's I got my neices for Christmas. I hope this don't happen. I told them about this very thing with their other stuff I have gotten them. I tell them that it's a sad thing but even your best of friends can't always be trusted. It's a harsh reality but that's what I tell them. Sad to say that even in their case not all family can be trusted either. I will hate it if that happens to them. I don't know any advice I can offer you but I hate that happened to your DS. I hope that either they fell guilty and bring it back or he finds it somewhere.

That's a tough spot! I'd be fuming.

I'd probably ban anyone going into his room until it shows up. Anyone. Your DS shouldn't mind because if and until he gets it back he doesn't want someone milling about his room with "sticky fingers". If the culprit knows you mean business, maybe he'll get a case of the guilts and will "drop" it in your house somewhere. It's no fun for kids to have zero privacy when over a friend's house. That's the price for theft! I'd let DS know that once it shows up he can have friends in his room again. Your DS tells his friends. Then wait and see. It might work.

Then I'd probably use a sharpie marker to put his name on all his stuff that is hot property and could walk.

DS's iPod Mini mysteriously disappeared from his room where it was hooked up to his computer to charge. The connecting wire and iPod were gone, so I know that it wasn't just a matter of him misplacing the iPod. Needless to say, I keep a better eye on the 3 guys he had over just before it went AWOL. His new iPod has his name laser-engraved on it.

Wouldn't it be neat if we could install one of those detectors (like the stores have) into the doorways of our home somehow and fasten tags to our possessions so if someone tried to walk out with something an alarm would sound?
Hey, have I hit upon an idea for a new home marketing idea????

Are you sure it's not just misplaced... 2 weeks is a pretty long time. My room would only last a day or so being clean!!!

Kim, DS is 14 and a typical teenager. I can put up with the mess so long and then I make him help me clean it. ;) All 3 gameboys were in his room at that time. I know, because I breathed a sigh of relief at finding them! His room is still pretty clean and organized. Unless we're going on a trip he does not take his gameboys out of the house. I keep a pretty clean/clutter free house so it's highly unlikely it's been misplaced.

I would definately ban the kids from going in his room. These games aren't cheap! I was kind of in the same position last year. My 7 year took his gameboy on the bus and let his friend "borrow" it for the weekend. I didn't know he snuck it on the bus let alone let his friend borrow it. I didn't know this kid at all and my DS couldn't remember his last name! I didn't find out it was missing until later in the next week. I called the principal of the school - since it happened on the bus home and luckily the principal stepped in and called both children to the office. Discussed what happened and wanted the friend to bring it back to school to return to my DS. Yes, we did get it back, but it looked like it had been buried in dirt and scratches all over it. It still worked though. I scratched his name and our number on the outside of it with a screwdriver.
Hopefully, the parents of the other kids your child plays with will find it and get the little one to return it to its owner. But until then, I would again....ban his friends from playing in the bedroom Good luck.

Engrave his name on the top of the new DS...that should deter any of his friends from taking it.

I'd call all the boys moms and say "DS has seemed to misplace his [color] gameboy sp, could you see if perhaps he has left it at your place?"

That will put the parents on alert for a gameboy that isn't their kids without putting them on the defense of their kid being accused of being a theif.

I agree with that.Where do you get them engraved??

I hope that it turns up. THis happened to my Ds once, I thought one of his friends took his Gameboy Sp but it did turn up in his room. DS just misplaced it.

Where do you get electronic equipment engraved? I would like to get my DS's ipod engraved.

I'm not sure. My friend has an engraver. She brought it over at the beginning of the school year so I could engrave DD11's name on the $80.00 calculator she uses everyday in Algebra. I don't know where she got it.

My sons Nintendo DS has been mysteriously missing for over a year. You would think we would of found it in that time. We have had numerous game systemes go missing. With the new ones I am going to have a check out policy on them, not sure what to do about daughters IPOD.
