ONE MORE Disney DAY or just another nightmare?

First I should say we typically visit the park during off season. We are used to a little bit of a crowd on our weekend days and very low weekday crowds. We live in the northwest, yet have been annual pass holders a few years in a row now. We love Disney and feel a type of ownership and respect regarding the park.

When the OMDD promo was announced we were sad because we had already purchased flights and planned a trip at that time and would be flying out that day, but thought we would at least go in at 6am and stay until afternoon when we needed to catch our flight... after a delay on our arrival we ended up changing out flights so we could attend the full event.

THE WEEKEND - I mention our previous days activities for background that we had already been in the parks for days and that we were having a great time. We checked into the Disneyland Hotel on Saturday. Our son was anxious to check out the new pool and water slides and we spend a few hours in the park until late. Sunday we took in a full day at Disneyland. Monday my Father and Aunt joined us and we park hopped giving them a tour of the new and the old. Monday and Tuesday crowds were light and with a combo of good planning and fast passes we didn't really wait for anything much longer than a few minutes. Tuesday we spent at DCA, ending our day early with room service for dinner so we could rest up for the 6am opening.

THE BIG DAY - I didn't sleep well Tuesday night anticipating the crowds and just not knowing what to expect. New reports said a thousand or more were lined up by 10pm.... So we got up about 4:30 and but still didn't make into Disneyland until about 6:30, which turned out to be a good thing as we missed the masses that had waited out all night ... And we wouldn't have ended up with the special Mickey ears anyway.

First impression... LINES... MAJOR lines, lines for every character in mainstreet over twice as long what we are used to, lines for photo pass in front of the One More Day sign, lines into gift shops, lockers, etc... just massive lines.

We had thought it would be fun to do every single attraction in the park. Figuring there would be one or two reprieve's in crowds when we would really get through a group of things fast, gather fast passes and just use our knowledge about touring plans... And that we'd be done early.. have lazy dinner and people watch.. then use fast passes over night when we suspected it could be super crowded and full of young adults.

This was our first mistake. We should have looked at the day more of a hang out day, a people watching day, a day to graze through the parks with snacks and special food options. Instead we ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time ALL. DAY. LONG. We decided to start in Tomorrowland, Space Mountain was down so that really filled some of the other things up like Buzz and Star Tours. It felt like 3pm on a busy day. I hear other areas had walk on or short rides after opening, but we just somehow ended up always in some sort of mess, walking in circles. Our son did get picked for Jedi Training and we were having a good time for the most part.

Someone mentioned Modern Family was being filmed... I think there might have been three different things filmed that day and it seemed like we always ended up in some jam becasue of this.

At the beginnig of the day I felt like the crowd was really excited to be there... lots of Disney fans, people were happy. Later in the day I felt like the crowd changed. it was more like grad night... Crowds were disprespectful, garbage was everywhere, cups and trash tossed into the scene on various attraction, left in vehicles, all through the lines, etc. Lines were being missmanaged by cast member. When they would decide to open things up and rearrange the chains in switchbacks or make two lines as in the Jungle Cruise line they rarely stayed to even things out before the merge, but just let about 30 or so people walk in front of us. People were cutting lines, major GAK abuse, just a mess... I felt like the cast members had no control over crowds... and by late evening became tired and oblivious to lines and were sometimes caught in their own little world gossiping and talking as lines of people were waiting to be seated on an attraction.

And the crowd control issues just weren't in attractions or in lines.. I usually praise Disney for their great planning around shows like parades and such. They way they keep people moving, discreetly take down ropes allowing people to easily exit an area after an event, etc. But it was just like we'd end up in a sea of not moving people over and over again. While waiting by the path in between Adventureland and Frontierland for my DH to meet us back with food he was getting from the BBQ place across from Indiana Jones he was pushed all the way to Main Street before he could return to us with cold food.

And I never really saw special characters... maybe just wrong place at wrong time, but even at 4:30 we tried to figure out the Mickey Pajama Party line and one girl who was still in line and looked like she had at least 30 min. to go said she's been waiting over an hour... by late evening all big rides were like 90 and small rides like 30 -45... just so unimaginable crazy..

Oh and the bathrooms were a just a mess. I didn't think it was funny at the time, but multiple times ended up waiting in a line for a sink, then having soapy hands and a faucet that either didn't spray enough or just stopped working altogether during my turn... so I waited in another line with dripping soapy hands just to rinse and another line as one one or two paper towel dispensers worked. And it was obvious there was not enough staff keeping stalls clean... I am a bit of a neat nick, so these things stress me out. (edited to add specifics like stalls with poo smeared all over the floor, etc.)

By the end of the night we still had a few more things do cross off our list to complete every attraction in the park. We almost gave up becasue it just wasn't fun anymore. The crowd had changed... But we pushed through and ended up leaving about 4:30 because people were starting to talk about getting out of the park being a nighmare and it sure felt like that was a possibility to us. We had our 10 year old with us and felt it was better to be safe than sorry.

When we left there were still lines of people trying to get in, they wouldn't even stamp our hand (which is our family's special tradition, because gettign your hand stamp as you leave for the last time each trip means you can always come back)... And there were huge lines at the ticket booths... I can't imagine if they were still hoping to get in, getting tickets for tomorrow or wh?

EDITED TO ADD - Oh and to really tell you how demoralized we were - we left with sets of Fast Passes to Space Mountain, Star Tours and Big Thunder Mountain... We had planned to do a second run through the big rides last thing before leaving the park... And honestly, we just couldn't convince ourselves it was worth pushing through the crowds to use them! Saving these as a keepsake of the day.

Overall.. it was just busy. Like Christmas Capacity Busy WITHOUT all the special decorations and Christmas Cheer. We didn't feel like it was all that special. All we walk away with is to be able to say we did it. But if I had to do it again... I wouldn't! If I had to do it again I might have just gone to DCA for the day and swam at the hotel and had a good night's sleep... then waking up on Thursday and going to the park for a few more hours with no crowds before it was time to catch our plane to fly home.

To top things off... as if we didn't already feel like we were hit by a truck, one our taxi ride to the airport we were in a multiple car pile up... and being the first car we felt every single slam into the pile... We are all ok... I think my neck is feeling a little weird and we are all going to go into see our doctor just in case... As the last car, which was a truck hit the pile he turned and came up along side of us, also hitting the cement barrier. I was worried he was going to push and turn us out into the other lane of oncoming traffic... where my son and I would be exposed... We were not and I realize it could have been so much worse!

Go give your little one's an extra squeeze tonight!

All I can say is WOW! :scared1:You articulated that very well. Great visual of your nightmare! So glad your family wasn't hurt in the accident!:flower3:

Ugh! Sorry about the crash, I'm glad it wasn't worse. Sorry your visit ended so unpleasant, I'm glad you had the days before to enjoy low crowds, short waits.

Oh no! :( I'm sorry you had such a bad time. The vast majority of reports I've read said the hours after 8 PM were terrible, and I agree with them. Compounded with that, I know what a difference expectations can make. I went to a Halloween party a couple years ago with expectations of light crowds and was very disappointed at how crowded the park was. (And it was not half as crowded as your day, never mind the alcohol on 2/29...) Some of it is where you happen to be; my brother and sister-in-law, who were at the Halloween party at the exact same time as me, thought it was great. They happened to be in slightly less-crowded areas and didn't expect a perfect evening with light crowds, so they had a better time.

Though regardless of expectations, it seems the majority of Disney fan community people online who attended didn't care for the leap day experience in DL (with good cause). :sad2: You're not alone; thanks for sharing your thoughts! I am impressed you managed as many attractions as you did!

If it's any consolation, it sounds like DCA was quite busy too, possibly as busy (proportionately) as DL before 8 PM. Many people DID report a positive experience at DL before 8 PM...it was after that got very bad. Also, food service lines were often an hour-plus anyway, so just hanging out for the food may not have even helped. :scared:

(And I hope you feel better from the accident...how horrible! :sad1: )

I couldn't have said it better. The day was great but when I returned at night what a scary scene. The line for the bag check alone was a nightmare. I went on one ride, ended up buying cookies at the store and went home. Today is our last day of our first trip. Hope it goes better..

The day was fine for us too. We got there around 1030. We went back to te hotel around 5 and came back a little after 8, if we hadn't just walked 15min to get there, we would have turned right around. Surprisingly it only took 30min to enter the park, but it was a mess and the lines weren't managed well. K rode Winnie the pooh and the carousel and we left. Yesterday was fine for us with both parks, but we have 2 little kids so only did kiddie rides.

I have a lot of respect for those of you who even attempted to do OMDD. I'm sorry it was so stressful! The disrespect and garbage would get to me too!

OMDD was our last day of 3 at the park. The first two were amazing as was the first half of the 29th. We came back after dinner and it really was wall to wall people in places. We found a great spot for the 10 pm showing of the parade and left at midnight. There was way to many people, but it was still pretty neat to say that we were there.
All in all a great trip to DL with our 6 yr old daughter (her first).

I flew down just for this. I wanted to see if I could spend 24 hours. It was great until World of Color ended and everyone in LA wanted to come to Disneyland. Lines all became 60+ minutes and it was just chaotic.

I mentioned it to DH when he called at 2am and his comment "Why? It's not that big of a deal" I have to agree why in the world were so many people trying to come. For those that were doing the full 24 hours it was an endurance adventure, but that was really it.

But that morning it was great got into the park at 6:25 (got in line at 5:45) bag check was holding things up. Then I stood in the line to get a locker. Knocked out all of Fantasyland except for Peter Pan and then Tomorrowland. I saw mickey around 9am with a 0 minute wait. Minnie had a 10 minute wait. I went on Indy and PotC with little wait before I started to be following Modern Family it seemed.

:cool1: Got a little busy after WOC? Park a little crowded after 9 or 10pm? What did you expect it to be? Just another day in paradise, modern DL. Better get used to it.......:cool1:

Welcome to the DIS. :cutie:

I was there from 6am. We did DL until 930am (got a locker, bought the limited edition merchandise, and got some FP and rode some popular rides) then went over to DCA for a bit before having lunch at Blue Bayou (no reservation--just walked up when they first opened and got right in). Then back to DCA until after WOC. Back to DL for the rest of the night.

My impressions:
The Modern Family filming was disruptive and caused major traffic flow issues. What a day to choose to film!

Castmembers tried, but many were very unprepared. Example: Indy went down and when we headed back over there 3 hours later, they had instituted a one way system thru AdventureLand and they pushed us out and around thru FrontierLand and no one could tell us whether Indy was running or not. After about 30 minutes working our way around to Indy--Yep it was still down! It would have saved people lots of time and frustration if they could have been in the loop re the closure. And it wasn't like it had just broken down. It was down for many, many hours.

I never found a dirty bathroom, even the super busy one in Fantasyland near Alice in Wonderland.

Previous poster was right about the lines/queues. They snaked everywhere! Rides, restaurants, bathrooms, and even the kiosks. At 3am there was a forty person line for hot coffee and churros at the kiosk near Buzz.

I also agree that the atmosphere changed dramatically after midnight. Very Grad Night-ish with large groups of teens roaming around in packs with linked arms and plenty of loud screams.

Lots of sleeping in strange places (announcement on the Disneyland Railroad "Remember there is no eating, drinking or sleeping on the journey" said very tongue-in-cheek) and outlets for phone chargers were being hoarded like they were gold.

Overall, I thought the majority of the cast members did an awesome job. The gals at the River Belle Terrace were so cheerful and perky at 3am it was a pleasure to be there. But being in the park itself was like being in Times Square on New Years' Eve.

Would I do it again? Absolutely! It will just take me four years to recover!

The 29th was the last of our 7 day trip to DL, and it was a good thing the other days were so great, because OMDD was a poorly run, very un-Disney experience. We had a fantastic first half of the day, but when we tried to take our 5 year old back to the park early that evening, we took one look at the crowds and went back to our hotel. I did some shopping at downtown Disney late that night and saw people barfing on the street, others obviously drunk and/or high. CM's I was talking to at my hotel and in the stores said their relief wasn't showing up because they were stuck in traffic for upwards of 3 hours just trying to get into the park. We followed the "festivities" on twitter, and it was pretty apparent a lot of people were treating it like a rave and being very disrespectful to the park. Pretty sad, if you ask me..:sad2:

I agree with the above. I was actually pretty upset when I heard about the OMDD event, because I had planned our trip specifically to be during a slower time of year, taking my kids out of school to do so. I just knew the event would bring nightmarish crowds, and was worried it would ruin the days leading up to it too. I'm so glad Wednesday was the last day of our 4 days at the resort. Sun through Wed afternoon were just great; perfect because my son's best friend had his first time at Disneyland, and we got to ride a lot with no lines at all, easy to get in to entertainment. By Wed afternoon it was definitely more crowded than I like it, but manageable. We left for a couple of hrs' break at the hotel, and made the mistake of trying to come back in for dinner after WOC. We actually made it to Golden Horseshoe, but there were already rowdy seemingly intoxicated groups of teens/20s roaming about, with lines for the bathrooms and >60 min waits for rides. It was a struggle just to get back to Main Street to get out of the park. I'm glad we didn't try to stay for the parade. We saw the thousands waiting to buy tickets & get through security. Awful.
OMDD is a really cool idea, and they had some fun elements, but clearly needed better planning & crowd control. It should be a ticketed event. Although they made so much money on this thing I doubt they will want to try to limit the crowds in future!:scared:

Edited my first post to add

Oh and to really tell you how demoralized we were - we left with sets of Fast Passes to Space Mountain, Star Tours and Big Thunder Mountain... We had planned to do a second run through the big rides last thing before leaving the park... And honestly, we just couldn't convince ourselves it was worth pushing through the crowds to use them! Saving these as a keepsake of the day.

and specifics about the bathrooms that disgusted me enough that I didn't care to dwell on them or type them out... well, one example was poo smeared all over the floor of a stall. When I reported this to a CM she said, "oh, we knew they're sending someone." with no attempt to close the stall, set out a sign or keep children away who were walking through it..

Sorry if my post was a bit scatterbrained. I was super tired, but wanted a chance to give a quick report about my feelings regarding the event. I have read a few replies on various threads stating people just needed to go in with the right attitude. But like I have said, I have been there during busy Christmas and the special atmosphere makes up for crowds. There was nothing really special about this event that made up for such chaos.

My fiancee and I flew in to LAX from Philadelphia on Wednesday night, and were heading to DL around 10 PM. Well before approaching the turnoff for I-5, the overhead electronic sign read "traffic jam at Disneyland Drive" - not a good sign (literally!). We were checking into the Grand Californian, so I bypassed Disneyland Drive and went in via Katella which wasn't too bad. There were signs everywhere posted which read "Disneyland Park full". We got to the gate around 11:30 and it was chaos! However, we managed to get in within 15 minutes or so. The place was crazy, so we just stayed for a few hours. It was definitely more of a teen party atmosphere at that point. We did a single rider ride on Splash, rode Winnie the Pooh and Pirates, then just left around 3 AM. The line to buy tickets at the front gate at 3 AM (!) was still snaking through dozens of queues!!

we just came back home and i was going to say that it was very special for us to be there on OMDD! it was DH's first time at DL and it was a lot of fun to people-watch and see so many die hard disney fans (though we didn't spot a single lime green mickey!)

we were there at 5 AM and went to the wrong queue, someone told us it was actually the beginning of the queue and not the end so we had to move to the very end XD it was funny that they waited like 20 minutes to let us know we were in the wrong place and when they did, those in line were very polite.

we finally made it to DL, we saw the CMs waving "hello" to everyone, we had our pic taken in front of the castle, then we headed to Star Tours and Haunted Mansion I think. Then we went back to the hotel to get some sleep. At like 6:30 we went back to DL, worried that we wouldn't be able to enter the parks again but we had no problems re-entering.
then we did as much as the crowds allowed us to do, rode Splash and BTM, and then we stayed for Fantasmic but we were preety much dead by then.

DH was having trouble keeping his eyelids open and as soon as fantasmic ended we went straight to the hotel.

to us it wasn't nightmarish at all, we actually enjoyed being in a special occasion, and we would definitely do it again :) it's true that the crowds were massive but I don't know, we still enjoyed it

it was too bad that we didn't make it till 6 AM, we wanted to stay for the leap day meet and for the park closing but it was absolutely impossible to stay alive. the 12 hour flight had its impact on us :)

I agree with the original poster, it was great until the evening...

We got in at 7am and walked right in, did photo ops, shopped etc... got a star tours fp, rode space mtn with a 30 min wait (not bad) The crowd had a great buzz to it everyone was excited and cheery. :thumbsup2

We left around 4:30pm to rest and get some warmer clothes then left to go back in around 6:30pm...YOWZA the line to get in was long, the park was sooo much more crowded.

We milled around shopping, rode its a small world, checked out the dance party, shopped some more, maybe rode another ride, I cant remember then around 9pm we found a seat near the matterhorn/near castle hub and waited for the 10pm parade. After that we went to check out Mickey and gang in their PJ's but the line was longgg so we decided to come back after later, we then headed towards Rivers of America and that was CrAzY packed already for the 1am fantastmic show. :scared1:

We orginally had 1am reservations for Cafe Orleans so we could view fantasmic at the same time but after seing the crowds and thinking of how horrible it would be trying to get out of the area we walked up at 11:30 and they honered our reservation early (that was nice because the wait for walk ups was over 1 hr) Our waitress was great and we met a cute couple whose fiance had proposed to her in the morning in a Aladdin suit and it was aired on the news...I think KTLA? We ordered our food quickly but it took forever to come out and it was sooo cold outside (they need some outdoor heaters) Oh but the Banana Fosters French toast and Bacon was Fantastic!

After we ate we went back to take pictures with the characters in their PJ's but they were gone because it was after 12:30 and Mickey had to do the Fantasmic show, the CM said Mickey and friends might be back for more photo ops in about 1-1.5hrs but no guarantee. We then went to Fantasyland and attempted to get in line for Snow White but the line was looping all around and que'd to the outside so we gave up. We were going to try to do a few other things but the crowds were so crazy and people were pretty rude running in between you, bumping you etc...with no excuse me's or I'm sorrys that we gave up and said it wasnt worth it. :sad2: (also while waiting for the parade we saw a few members of Security run by with dogs which is something you rarely see) We decided that we would rather go back to the room and get rest and come back in the morning refreshed when the park re-opened.

Main street to get out at 1:30 am was like after a parade and outside of the gates at both sides of the ticket boothes the lines to buy tickets were insane. The one facing downtown disney lines went all the way back to the security gates and was packed (every lane!) I couldnt believe it...why do you want to buy an $80 ticket to just go in for a few hours? :confused3

Overall the day until early evening was magical! :wizard:
