While in line at TDS for an hour and a half today, the subject of the date on this pin came up. I said that I had read in several places that the 1981 was not an error, that it was in commemoration of something other that WED's birth. A CM in line insisted that according to company info, it was indeed an error. She said it was supposed to say 1901 but when it came back 1981 they concocted a story to go along with it.

Any opinions? Anyone here with inside info?

A movie/Docu-drama was released in 1981... Called a Man and His Dream....

Nat is exactly right. You can look it up ( as one of our CMs did)........ I have not seen a memo stating it was ever intended to be otherwise ( not saying I couldn't possibly miss a memo) but I do try to stay up on all our pin info if nothing else!
I would imagine the birthday locket pin would be the one with the 1901 date on it.......
But yes, we still have people in our area trying to say it is an error-- too bad the movie wasn't 1982 or something to cut down on all the rumors :D

Thanks guys! I argued the point with her, but she was so sure she was right that I dicided to let it go.....

Kathi, where did your fellow CM find it. According to Disney A-Z it originally ran in Tokyo from April, 1988 to Sept. 1995 and at DL, Videopolis, from 12/89 to 4/90.

Scratch that - Walt Disney - One Man's Dream a 2 hr. TV movie aired 12/12/1981. Was actually the story of Walt's life and how he overcame the pessimisim and critism of his peers. Christian Hoff played Walt and was the first actor to ever do so. Disney A-Z, 1998 edition, Pg. 593.

There must have been something odd at one time. Before the pins were on sale at TDS, I spoke several times with the CM's at TDS regarding the pins. (Imagine that ;) )
One of the first times, two CM's stated that they wondered who looked at the proofs and okay'd the pins, since the first one was an error on the date. I forget what they said, but I was under the impression they were getting their info from Disney. Which wouldn't surprise me, considering their limited pin knowledge -- esp back then.
But it could just have easily been all of them talking among themselves.

Dom that is where she found it.... :)
even our sheets that came listing all pins and their release dates say pin #1 1981 ( and that sheet is in clear type LOL)

I know when we all came back from the Disneyana Convention, which is were the #1 pin was first handed out, that people were saying #1 was an error... that's what started all of this! A good friend of mine told me at the convention he thought there was a show in 1981, so we came home ready to hunt and search...... but even now I am still hearing the 'error' rumor in our store and we keep telling people about the show when we do hear them say the dreaded 'error' word ;)

So I think the Sept. Disneyana Convention is when all of this started and many CMs heard the rumor and since we didn't have much pin info back then, as it all seemed to come in right before the 22nd, I think that's how the rumor got so blown up!

So that's all I know and how I see it, reporting live from my bedroom!
This is Kathi signing off, good day and good pin collecting ;)
