We are thinking of extending our trip by one or two nights. Because it is the weekend we are thinking of paying cash to save the points - the first week would be on points. Would we have to change rooms or is there a way to make it one big reservation?

You can try to link the reservations. I just made reservations for a friend and was able to link the reservation number with his reservation number made through another member so that his family can stay in the same room. This should be able to work with cash and points reservations.

If you book the room on cash through MS, then they can link and you will not have to move rooms.

However, if you book through DRC, then there is a chance that they might ask you to change rooms.
