While I don't disagree with you about not sweating the small stuff and enjoy the vacation and your family. The rudeness has to stop. Ts out of control! People only think of themselves and their family like they are more important than anyone else. One or two quick photos isn't usually what gets people upset its the non stop flashes trough the whole ride so much so that others cannot enjoy the ride. That's wrong. Yes, have fun with your group but also remember there are many other groups/families around and try not to bother them. If everyone tried this things would be better like they used to be.

But what you do not realize is, this has ALWAYS happened, in fact back then I find it was worse, you'd see those lil kodak 110's going off like crazy lol. It is nothing new, it's just a different mindframe people have these days. Like I said I'm not saying anyone is right or wrong here, I'm just saying it was differently handled back then.

My version of the camera flash/smartphone was at Fantasmic.

I had a great seat, centre about 1/3 way up from the stage and everyone, I mean everyone, around me took out some type of "tablet" screen thingy and held it up in front of themselves so they could "film" the show! :surfweb:
WHAT!! LOL
They were watching Fantasmic through their ipod-y devices. Some of them were like, 10" across! Haha, really.:rotfl2:
Apart from amazement, it didn't bother me at all. Well, I wanted to shout out "hey folks, wouldn't you rather see the performance?" but maybe they were filming it for someone at home who couldn't make the trip
I have no video to watch at home but the memory of that Fantasmic first time will be with me always.:lovestruc

It really sounds like they need to set up one section of the theater for those with "I-things". ;)

I've never understood this phenomenon. You miss the whole show by trying to film it, and when you get home, you have the exact same video that is out on Youtube? Why record that?

no, and you are right, I know it's mostly venting. But there are those few who actually do. I just hate to see people get all bent out of shape over frivolous things because then it over shadows the good they experience.
Asking someone politely not to be an inconsiderate jerk doesn't overshadow my good experience. However, someone being an inconsiderate jerk does overshadow my good experience.

"Am I the only one around here who gives a @#$%! about the rules?!"

Apparently you are not understanding what I'm saying because you feel the need to keep justifying.. I'm not calling anyone out or demonizing anyone.. I was just merely showing the differences of actions in time.

We were on POTC once with a "flasher" and some smart young men taught me what to do about it. The first time the lady flashed they said "1" loudly enough for her to hear, but not too loud. And it continued. "2", "3", by "4" I had joined in and by "5" she got the message and capped her lens. I will do that again next time.

:thumbsup2

Is it also a problem if a child brings a small flashlight for the dark rides. We were going to try that as my granddaughter is afraid, but I don't want to do anything to spoil someone else's experience. If that is the case maybe she could just wear glow necklaces and bracelets, but I thought the flashlight would make her more secure.

Our $1 store has glow wands (stick with a star at the end). We told DD that it was a pixie wand sent to keep her safe and happy on all dark rides. After the 1st ride on ea. dark ride she never asked for it again until we were headed back to the bus. For some reason the buses bothered her more.

Well, with Magic Bands, they could dock the 'photographer' $5 each time they do it. heh. Or lock them out of their room for 20 minutes when they return to their resort. Or have all the CM's greet them as "someone who doesn't follow the rules", or any number of fun things tied to their Magic Bands. :D Dock you a FP+, make it so you can't pull any FP's, make it so any time you scan your band it goes BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ - "NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY". etc. etc.

Love it!:rotfl2::thumbsup2

These have all been at Disneyland but I've heard a CM announce over a ride speaker several times "No flash photography!" when someone was taking pictures on dark rides. If I'm recalling correctly it's happened on HM, Pirates, and Snow White .

I was going to say the same thing. Disneyland is my home park and I have heard the 'no flash photography' announcement made on rides. POTC and HM come to mind. I just assumed they would do the same thing at WDW.

Your comment has nothing whatsoever to do with mine. I am not taking your bait for an argument.

I'm sorry that you took my question to be baiting for an argument. I didn't mean it that way.

It just seems to me that so much of this discussion centers on making allowances for other people's actions that inconvenience us.

Some have 'famously' taken the position that they do whatever makes them happy with little regard for others' enjoyment. Some like yourself have taken the other extreme view that they would never let even their own medical condition infringe upon the enjoyment of others and it is rude of others to do the same.

I supposed, rather reasonably I think, that reality would push each of us somewhat closer to the center of this spectrum. I mean, as a society we have required a certain level of acceptance of the needs of others in the form of the ADA.

If it's busy at WDW, the ADA requires 4-9 able bodied people to wait for the next bus so that one disabled person in a wheelchair (and their family) can ride. Well, the ADA requires 4 people lose their seats to the disabled person and Disney policy allows up to 5 additional family to accompany them.

The position you posed seemed very firmly opposed to letting other people's get in the way of your fun (and vice versa) so I raised this example to see where you draw the line, or at least to agree that there is a line.

Wheelchair guy is a pretty extreme case of serious disability + significant annoyance to others. I acknowlege that it's an annoyance to be pushed out of line for the bus but I accept it because I wouldn't want to be where wheelchair guy is even if that means getting back to the resort sooner.

But what about glow-light shoe guy? He gets dizzy or nauseous if he doesn't know where his feet are. But glow-lights are a distraction on dark rides. So... poor baby bomb victim? He should just stay off the dark rides?

Or the kid with a fear of the unknown that's just a little more than she can bear without a small flashlight? Too bad, come back when you can do the ride without it?

Or the woman who loves Disney so much that she just can't help herself and takes pictures all through Haunted Mansion? She doesn't get to capture her memories just because it screw up your vision or causes an epileptic seizure?

I hope what you are getting is that there is a line where reasonable people say, "no, that's going to far". I don't mean to Judge you, I'm just curious where you draw yours.

I put mine somewhere just a little before flashlight kid. Try to find a solution that doesn't project a beam out of your ride carriage.

I don't know if I've just become more sensitive to it but I agree with the bolded. Every time I've gone on a dark ride over the past couple of trips I've been bracing myself for the flash photography. I really wish Disney would do something about it (although I'm not sure what the appropriate response would be).

I'm the kind of person who keeps my iPhone in my waistband. Don't ask. I check wait times, take pictures, and check weather radar in the blink of an eye. I am also VERY aware of how my phone can bother others if:
A. I decide to stop in the middle of a walkway to read my phone
B. I take it out during a dark ride or show
C. If it makes noise during a quiet moment.

So I make sure not to offend people.... and I am now very sensitive to the obliviousness of fellow guests. Flash photography, looking at photos on their cell phones during the entire Carousel of Progress, holding up their phones or (worse) iPads to record things (badly) that you can find on youtube....

This really could apply to the OP also, who for whatever reason seems determined to keep starting threads this week about hackneyed and oft-discussed WDW issues.

She better get the "reusable mug" and "FP runner joining their party on line" threads going before RFID and FP+ kills both issues. :)

Nice! :lmao:

ya know, the ride is SUPPOSED to be scary. there are some "not so scary" scary rides. (well, they did just take one away, snow white) but the haunted mansion is NOT in fantasyland. it is actually NOT a little kids ride. it is supposed to be scary. supposed to be dark.

if you have a little one who is not old enough, mature enough, or still afraid of the dark, then I guess this isn't the ride for them.. use the child swap.

if you think they are on the "edge", ie. they just mgiht like it, let's try it, then a little gow stick held down where only they can see it, is fine.

DARK rides are supposed to be DARK.

I don't like heights. or steep drops. you know what? I dont' ride roller coasters. I would reallylike to be able to experience the yeti (well, I guess alot of peopel would, but that's a whole dif. subject. lol).

I would also like to see the hologram ghosts in the hallways of tower of terror.

guess what , if you are afraid of something in the ride, you just bow out of it. you don't get to experience that.

Agreed. I, too, don't do thrill rides anymore. Too scared! BTMRR is as about as thrilling as I'll go. But I looooove my dark rides! POTC, HM, etc... My sister's kids, all under 9, are afraid of the dark at some point, but love BTMRR! So, I think the integrity of the DARK ride needs to be maintained for people like me - that's all I ride!

I think we need a special thread on Disboards called "Offenders!" We can all take pictures of the people doing offensive things at Disney and post them there. The Line cutters. The Flashers. The (apparently) dreaded bubble blowers...

You underestimate us sir. Some of us are perfectly capable of acknowledging or calling out people for being inconsiderate arses without letting them impact our good time in the least. For instance, I'm still here having a good time while Miss "I don't worry what other people think" has left us for a kinder nicer Disney forum that must also yearn for better days gone by.

Yeah, like those days before she joined their forum.

Which is my point. Now days it's all about "you offend me! so I must counter act!" ... What does that solve? absolutely nothing..

Here's my beef with this:

We have gotten to the point as a society that pointing out or confronting the rude behavior of others is considered socially unacceptable.

THIS is something new and a sign of the times. With this type of mindset, people are much more comfortable DOING rude things because they know it is a rare time that anyone will actually call them out on it.

I'm assuming you're not a caveman Bayou, but I can not think of a time any significant period back where it was widely regarded as 'okay' to skip in line, fire a flash on a dark ride at Disney, speak loudly through a performance, or smoke in a designated non-smoking area.

What's different about times past and now is that when you did stuff like this back then, eventually someone would threaten to punch you in the throat for doing it.

Being a jerk had consequences back then and as a result probably was not the same level of a problem as it is today.

I'm old too but I have never liked flash photography on rides. The occasional snap shot I can ignore but a constant stream of flashing lights particularly in my direction is just annoying.

And against the rules if we care about those.

This is the way I remember it. If someone had been punched in the head for such an offense they may remember it differently. ;)

Whenever I buy one of those silly light-up necklaces sold all over WDW, which is every time I go, even though I have several at home, I always turn it off when I enter a ride. Just for this reason. I know that my light-up necklace is not part of what anyone wants to see inside Haunted Mansion!

Also, a quick add about the "bringing flashlights" or even glow necklaces on to rides. Here's what I thought about while reading the last 14 pages or so...

Spaceship Earth? Haunted Mansion? Go nuts with your flashlight! Ok, actually don't point it at anything out outside of your buggy, but I don't care if you want to shine it on your shoes through the whole ride.

POTC? Maelstrom? No way! You're in that boat WITH ME and 15 other people. Your glowing necklace will be a constant distraction, as will your flashlight. No checking your phones, either! Dark means dark and if you're in the boat with others, you either keep it dark (so they can enjoy the ride as it was intended) or go on a ride more suited to your needs.

THIS should get you post of the week.

Unless of course you are using your phone to score a FP+ reservation, right? I can't imagine that happening at all! :lmao: Sorry, just laughing at the irony of that. ;)
