So I happen to be heading to San Diego for a workshop in August. I had two free AA tickets I needed to use, so I am flying DH and my almost 4yo son out to join me. My workshop is on Thursday, August 25th. So that Friday, we will hit the SD Zoo and then drive to Anaheim that afternoon or evening.

I know traffic will be a nightmare, so we will either leave the zoo and plan to leave by 2:30pm or wait until after 7pm? Any tips on the traffic from SD to Anaheim?

We have a room using our points at Disneyland hotel for that Friday and Sat night (GCV was booked for DVC). So we will just hang at DTD or the hotel Friday night. If we get in early, might try for a nice dinner or even Goofy's.

Saturday, we will plan to spend the entire day at DL. We are skipping DCA since we only have one day. We are hitting WDW for a week in October, so we will see some of those attractions at WDW later anyhow. I also just visited DCA/DL last year. This is my DH and DS's first DL visit, so we just want to focus there and accomplish as much as we can in a day.

So given you have two late 30 somethings and a 3.5 yo, what sort of touring plan would you recommend? I don't need to plan the entire day ride to ride, but I want to have a strategy for at least the morning, so we can maximize fastpass use and hit all the biggies.

We will get to use the magic morning, so we will get in at 7am and plan to do rope drop. The park is open until midnight. We will need to take a midday break back at the hotel to let the little guy nap a few hours. We typically do this on our WDW trips and it works well, so that we can do rope drop and stay late too.

Even though he is 3.5, our little guy does like thrills. He's done Splash, Test Track, Big Thunder, Soarin etc. at WDW. So we want to do some of the thrills. He is 42" now (tall for his age). Not sure we will put him on space, that might be too intense for him. The only ride he won't be able to do is Indy. I do want to do that, as DH LOVES Indy, so we might just child swap that one (it says 46").

So with that in mind- knowing we want to:

  • tackle the usual toddler fantasyland stuff
  • plus thrill rides
  • are using magic morning with 7am entry (8am for off site guests)
  • taking midday break, probably 1 or 2pm for 2 hours, then come back
  • don't care about afternoon parade, can skip
  • fireworks- would like to see, but not a must
  • fantasmic, if we see, will be later show (10;30pm)
  • magic memories and you- can miss- or catch, don't care
The MUST DOs for sure include Peter Pan (DH's favorite), Splash, HM, Pirates, Alice, Subs, (Matterhorn is closed while we are there), Indy, Space, small world and basically anything they have at DL that we don't have at WDW. We also want to visit Toon town and do the train too.

So what should we hit in those first 2 hours or so and what order? We are happy to split up to send DH for a FP to something while i take DS to Dumbo or something etc.

Appreciate the help! I am a WDW pro/DVC owner and ex WDW CM, but have only been to DL twice and only once in the last 25 years! Given we only have one day, it's a tough challenge!

at rope drop I would send husband to get Star Tours fastpasses, then he can meet you in Fantasyland. Do all those rides as many times as you want, making sure to ride Allice in Wonderland and Mr. Toad's wild ride. The Casey Jr train and Storybook Canal boats are fun since they are unique to DL, but they open later.

I'm thinking your kid won't be tall enough for Indiana Jones, but if the adults want to ride, consider doing child swap. Once you're allowed to get your next FP, send husband off to collect more.

Pooh ride is back by splash and basically never has a line, but you'll want to FP Splash, Space Mtn, and Indy jones if you plan to ride those. BTMRR is easier to get on without a FP.

I do recommend the fireworks. Tinkerbell flies SO much more at DL than WDW. Also Dumbo flies! It's worth watching. Very magical.

You've gotten some good advice from DisneyMomma & Brenda. I will offer other comments on your very detailed post (love detailed posts:thumbsup2).... within your post below. But first....read Hydroguy's DLR for the WDW vet thread if you haven't already done so. :)

Hopefully others will comment, but i would think the traffic would be much worse heading north to south. I would think you'd be ok leaving by 2:30pm (& not traveling past Anaheim).

As you mentioned.....If you're staying at the DH, then you should be able to enjoy MM. With only one day you should ABSOLUTELY do so. Since you only have one day....Plan on lining up at the security gate (at the end of DTD) at 6:20am (yes....I said 6:20am :)).....if you want to be first on Peter Pan (& you DO want to be first on PP. ;)

imo, this is a WDW mindset. DCA is merely CaliforniaLand. It has LOTS of neat attractions (even for the 3 y/o).....& is a great place to spend the mid part of the day (if only for 1-2 hours. & since you're taking a mid day break, visit DCA on your way back to the DH (via the GCH side entrance).

We are hitting WDW for a week in October, so we will see some of those attractions at WDW later anyhow. I also just visited DCA/DL last year. This is my DH and DS's first DL visit, so we just want to focus there and accomplish as much as we can in a day.

Not all are "toddler". I LOVE the FL dark rides. :)

Do FL using the MM ride order (in order), then be prepared to nab your first FP ticket at 8:01am. (if ST is your first FP, you'll want to be in THAT FP line by 7:50am.) Assuming the Matterhorn is down, the order would be:

- PP (first...always first).
- Dumbo
- Alice
- Toady (or Tea Cups if they're loading)
- Tea Cups
- Carousel/Pinocchio/Snow White any order. (or ride these later & do Nemo or Buzz etc.)

But....you may want to either ride Buzz (a couple of times) or have one parent ride Nemo w/ kid (while the other goes to nab the first FP) the final 25 min. of MM.

You need to decide if Star Tours is on your "must do" list....if it isn't then that opens up your day (& your options). I recommend that you know FP inside & out prior to making a plan. Here's are some recommended tip threads from Hydroguy:

& I think you should consider sliding over to DCA for 1.5-2.5 hours.

Read the above threads for general info, DisneyMomma's One Day Thread, My Trip (one day) report thread (in my signature below) & HG's "Getting the most out of FP during High Season" thread to see how some of us do a "one day" tour.....& also let us know how Star Tours factors into your plan.

Report back & we'll provide some thoughts on a One Day plan (given your preferences).

Have a great time planning a visit to Walt's Park. :thumbsup2

:)

I'll be following this thread too, as we are also doing a 1 day, 1 park visit on an August weekday (we're staying off-site and purposely going on a non-MM day).

Heading off to read that thread about which FP to get first! :thumbsup2

Since the OP is staying at DLH, won't they get the 2 FPs per person? That might change the FPs to go for in the park.

I recommend downloading an app like mousewait on your phone if you're able to. It saves a lot of time and is usually pretty accurate. Have a great trip!

What Hound said, except skip Nemo. It takes forever and is boring boring boring.

You might want to check out the GRR ride in California...way funner than Kali Rapids. And if you are over there, the toddler rides in Bugs Land are really fun!

What works for us is Peter Pan first, then Dumbo, then Alice and then whatever we choose after that.
