Once upon a child - tell me about it

I have all kinds of baby clothes I need to get rid of. I'm looking into mom-to-mom sales, but has anyone taken their clothes to once upon a child? I like that you can get cash on the spot. About how much do they give you per outfit? Most are Carter's, really great condition.

(I would have a garage sale, but I don't live in a good garage sale area).

It all depends on what they need, and honestly, the Once Upon a Child here isn't the best (IMHO). I had some amazing baby things, no stains/tears complete outfits including matching shoes ... I think they bought 5 things total. The lady told me everything was covered in stains ... and I'm not tooting my own horn, but I was religious about keeping her things clean. It was disappointing. I ended up giving all of my baby stuff away because I didn't want to go through the hassle again.

I personally would never take anything to Once Upon a Child again. I went once, with some items I had. Brand New Carter's Princess Onesie with tags-$17 from the store. They wanted to give me 22 cents, or some ridiculous amout like it. I've done much better at the Just Between Friends sale that we have locally. Usually make a few hundred dollars each time. I ebay all of my "good" stuff. I put stuff in lots (2 or more items). I have done good on ebay with baby/kids stuff. I have sold carters stuff for much more than I would get at once upon a child. You can list 50 items free a month, then have to pay a fee on selling price and paypal fee. It is worth it to me.

I have another consignment store in the area that I use, I get 40% of the sale amount. Whatever they don't take, I take to once upon a child before taking to good will. It is hit or miss there. They don't give you much for the items.


If I remember correctly, you get 25% of what they would sell a toy or clothing item for. I think big ticket items (pack and play0 you may get 50% of what they would sell it for. The plus is that you get cash on the spot, but you aren't getting much for it.

I went one time and will not go back.
I had lots of good clothes and they were from all seasons.
They only wanted 2 carters holiday sleepers and offered 70 cents each.
So not worth my time and effort.

Same experience with Once Upon a Child. Wanted to give me 50 cents for boys' size 8 Gymbo jeans with the tags still on them, and $1 for a Ralph Lauren sweater with almost no pilling.

I bought most of my daughter's clothes off Ebay...we lived in a rural area and then overseas when she was a baby and toddler and I got so many cute things for very little money. I've also resold most of them on Ebay.

We did just have a neighborhood garage sale and I was able to get $2-3 for Gymo dresses but not much more. People will pay more on Ebay, I don't get it, and pay shipping, then pay in person when they can inspect the item.

But I will never go back to Once Upon a Child.

I have gone if I need quick cash. Like an extra $15 or $20 for something. But I don't rely on it to cover bills. I know in my area, they don't take a lot of newborn stuff because they are overstocked on it.

My OUAC doesn't even give cash on the spot. They review your items a few hours after you drop them off, then call you to come back. If you don't come back within 24 hours, you lose your items. It is extremely inconvenient.

I do use them. I take a couple huge bags or boxes and usually get 5 or 6 bucks.

My experience has been the same with OUAC. They pay very low prices. Almost **any** other way of selling will net you higher prices. We also live in an area that isn't great for garage sales so I have to get creative selling my stuff too.

I brought in 4 tubs of kids clothes when my kids were smaller. They wanted to give me $70 for everything. I told them "no thanks" and put them in my garage sale and made $400 on the same clothes.

I would check out your local children's consignment *stores* - you will typically receive 40% of the selling price in cash - much more than OUAC AND if you have a high quality one nearby, they will be able to get you top dollar for your items. Ask you friends, moms groups, check out their facebook page, etc. And, at the end of your consignment period, almost all will let you pick up your unsold items - then I would take them to OUAC or a mom sale.

I'd rather give my items to a neighbor, church, homeless shelter, or home for teen moms than sell it to Once Upon a Child. They are rude, nasty, and will give you pennies for items, even if the items are brand new. I wouldn't deal with them on any level whatsoever.

If you really feel you have to sell the items, I would find a consignment shop, Craigs List, or, if they're name-brand, sell on ebay.

We just went to OUAC and Plato's Closet on Sunday to sell dd13's stuff.

Plato's Closet is a joke. We could have clothes in perfect condition with the tags still on from places like Hollister, Abercrombie, or Aero and they won't take them. But this time they did take a ripped sweatshirt and gave us $2 for it...lol. I never know what they are looking for there, and sometimes I think those teenaged girls who work there don't have a clue! lol.

At OUAC they won't take anything that is xsmall from a teen store, but they do take most Abercrombie Kids and Justice clothes. But, just like Plato's Closet, we never know what is on their minds when the teenagers take some clothes and not others. They take some hideous top from Walmart, but not an Abercrombie Kids top that still had the tag on it. Go figure! Anyway, dd13 made $20 on selling her clothes on Sunday. Not a lot, but they were headed to the local Christian thrift store anyway.

OUAC is also picky about how old something is or out of season. I had some beautiful dresses fromthe prior Christmas and they said it was out of date. It was not even a year old I bought it in November, my daughter wore in for the holiday my younger daughter planned to wear it the following year but had a huge growth spurt.. Also you can not take summer stuff during sept-dec, you have to wait till they are ready to start pricing for that season..

I have had much better luck at mom2mom sales or even little privately owned resale shops in the area. Now I am at the point that I will just pass it down to those who can use is
