I have a question (yet another before I buy, most likely tomorrow) about how MS would pull/use points in the following reservation scenarios. Assume I have 100 points at BLT and 100 points at VGC, Sept UY.

Scenarion 1 - I make a 130 point reservation at BLT at 11 months out. At this 11 month mark MS would have to use 100 current year BLT points plus 30 BLT borrowed from the next year since I can't use any of the VGC points at 11 months out. Once these BLT points are borrowed from next year, I have to use them this use year. So it wouldn't make any sense to try to switch the 30 points over my current year BLT points to current year VGC points at 7 months because if I don't use any of the current year VGC points I could bank all 100 VGC points for use in year 2 (and still have 70 BLT points for next year), but the 30 BLT points that were borrowed at 11 months have to be used in the current UY.

Do I have that right?

Scenario 2 - I make a 130 point reservation at BLT at 7 months out. For this reservation I can use all current year points. What would MS do by default - 100 current year BLT + 30 current year VGC, 100 from VGC + 30 from BLT, 65 from each, ask me what I want to do?

If I was planning a big DL trip the following year and planned on banking all 100 of the current year VGC points to use the following year - could I instruct MS to use 100 current year BLT + borrow 30 BLT points from the following year, leaving all 100 VGC points in my account to bank?

Confusing, I know.

Thanks :thumbsup2

You are correct on both counts. For scenerio 2, you just tell MS how you want the points used at 7 months out. For scenerio 1, you might be able to use VGC points at 7 months IF there wasn't a waitlist for the days you want to change.

Borrowed points cannot be "unborrowed". Once borrowed, they become current year points.

Don't assume that MS will make the correct and logical choice for you. You need to have it all figured out before you call and tell them what to do. Have them verify what they have done before you hang up and check the DVC Member website just to make sure.

I could write a book on the screw ups that MS has made to our accounts. The more contracts and points you have the worse it is.

Theoretically, for scenario #1, you could "switch" BLT points for VGC points and bank the returned BLT points if:

1.There wasn't a waitlist for the nights at the beginning of the BLT reservation.

You would actually be dropping/canceling the first night or so and then making a new reservation for those nights using the VGC points. You can only drop nights at the beginning or end of the reservation. Otherwise, you must cancel the whole thing and make a whole new reservation. That can result in losing the entire reservation if there is a waitlist for any of the nights of the original reservation.

2. The nights at the beginning of the reservation were made with current use year points and your banking deadline has not passed.

If the nights that you want to "switch" were made with current use year points (rather than borrowed), the returned points would still be current use year points. Those could be banked assuming you were still within your banking deadline.

FWIW, you need to know exactly what you are doing to pull the above off and you need some luck as well. You may have to "argue" with MS to get the points you want used as the computer system is not always amenable. I've found that you need either an experienced CM or one who is willing to ask a supervisor to help in the more complicated situations.

No matter how you make your reservations, be sure to ask the CM to give you a complete status of your remaining points before you hang up. It's a lot easier to correct misunderstandings when they happen.

Good luck!
