On site, off site, or both? Crunching the numbers

That's why it's important to choose the right location if staying offsite. Depending on which park we were at, drive time was 8-15 minutes. On site folks would be hard pressed to near that using Disney transportation. Not to mention $589 for 8 nights stay with a full kitchen and a private bedroom for DW and I :)

That's one of the reasons I want to stay in Windsor Hills if we do stay offsite, because it seems to be one of the closest to the parks. Honestly, if we stayed onsite, we'd probably end up driving to parks anyhow, so the Disney transportation isn't much of a plus. Except at BWV, because I really love the ability to take a boat to both Epcot and DHS!

Another thing that you may not know about BWV villas: All studios are part of a 2-bedroom lockoff. What this means is that every studio in BWV connects with a 1-bedroom villa to make a 2-bedroom unit. When two different parties are using those rooms, the doors that connect the rooms can be locked on each side. Some people feel that you can hear through those doors better than you can hear through solid walls. Not all DVC studios are like this but at BWV, they are all like that.

Do you know if the studios at BCV are like this too?

I too say option #4 sounds like the best bet. By the time you add in parking and gas plus your time driving to and from the parks the savings seems like it is not worth it.

That would be my choice also.:thumbsup2

We stayed at Wyndham Bonnet Creek last year and while I LOVED the resort and the location, it was missing one thing- the disney magic!! So, I have to say that it will be hard for me to stay offsite again. You didn't say how old your girls are and this may play a big part in your decision. When my kids were smaller they loved the theming of ASMo, now that they are older they prefer POR, for the pool ,waterslide, and carriage rides. With that being said- I have a trip planned in 2 weeks at Sports and that was because it was cheap and spur of the moment- and my kids are just fine with that too! So of course, you need to decide how much money you really WANT to spend. (Oh and we drive to disney every year and we still drive our car into the parks- lol)

BCV has 36 dedicated studios and 74 lockoffs. However, "dedicated studio" is not a booking category. You can make a request for one but there are no guarantees that you will get one just because you asked for it. You will not know whether you have been assigned a dedicated studio until you check in.

Thanks for the BCV studio info.

My girls will be 5 and 6 years old when we go. I really hadn't given much consideration to the value resorts, I haven't researched any other than AoA because of the LM rooms. I just hate how far those rooms seem from the lobby/food area. Although since we have a car I guess we could always drive over to eat, lol. I like the idea of a queen bed, although we sleep on a double bed at home just fine. Is there a value resort you prefer?

We walked all over all star movies without a problem - but I did pay the extra 10 bucks a night to be closer to the pool and food court . I have only stayed at the movies and the theme was great !! I will be at all star sports soon and I can report back in a couple weeks- lol. Considering you will not be spending that much time in your room- a value would be fine . And those life size disney characters are very cool for little kids !

There's just something about that Disney Magic onsite that can't be put into words but you sure miss it when offsite!

Those life size characters are very cool for teens and 40somethings too ;)

We loved walking around the resort to all the pools and a great place for pictures! We did our Christmas cards with pictures from there twice! :)

Personally I love staying onsite and being surrounded in the Disney bubble 24/7 while I'm there. Our kids are 4 and 7. I don't find it a problem to share a room with them on property for the week. But in a few years might be more likely to stay off-site so we could spread out and have more privacy etc.

I think a big factor is - how much time do you think you'll be spending in your room? We spend the majority of our days in the parks and when we're not in the parks we're at the pool, so we don't find it hard at all to have the 4 of us in one room for the week. If you're planning on lots of time hanging around your resort though, you may want to have more room and stay off site.

Some days we like to take a mid-day pool break and staying onsite is very convenient for that too. We use the buses and its been easy to leave the parks for a swim and then head back for the evening.

I agree with this. I've only ever needed a room while on vacation to sleep and shower. Even when I'm at a resort, we're usually at least sitting around the pool even if not swimming. We only go back to the room to cool off for a minute, change clothes, and crash!

Plus, there's something special about the whole family staying together in a standard hotel room IMO! I guess it just comes down to preference. For me, I want everybody sitting around together on the beds, halfway watching TV, eating pizza delivery, staying up too late, and talking about what we're gonna do the next day. NO COOKING! NO CLEANING! That is vacation to us.

Other people want to be able to do laundry, cook meals to save money, and have alone time with their spouse and/or not have the kids sleep in the same room. It's a personal choice and neither is better/worse than the other. Someone who stays home with their kids 24/7 might need a vacation FROM them (aka space) while someone who works a lot might cherish being together in one room.

We have stayed at All Star Sports. We really liked it. We paid a little extra for a preferred room, and it was close to the pool and food court.

Just my son and I also stayed at POP for one night. My DH was at a conference and was meeting us in Orlando. I added one night to our trip so DS and I could just have an extra day before DH got there. Given that I was doing it so late, it was considerably less expensive to add a night at POP than at CSR. We were only there for one night, but we really liked POP, too. I would stay there again in a heartbeat.

Thank all of you for your input. Even though I still have quite a bit of time to change my mind, I think I made a decision about what I plan to do!

Eliza61 mentioned taking money out of the equation and thinking about how I would want to vacation. When I thought about it I realized for a first Disney trip, I think I really would like to spend the majority of the time in the parks. Not push my kids to the point of exhaustion, so if we needed a break we could take one and go back to a place where we could relax, either in a room or in the resort. I realized that I really do want the dining plan, not just because I crunched the numbers on that and it actually will save us money, but for the dreaded reason of prepaying for most of our meals. I say dreaded because I always thought it was a bit silly, until I told my DH about the way the dining plan works and he is all for it. Why? Because he loves to cruise and likes the fact that our meals are included in our cruise price. That's the way he likes to vacation so it makes sense he would enjoy the dining plan and use it to it's fullest. No, we don't eat out at fancy places at home or order dessert when we go out or order a drink when we go out, but we sure do when we cruise! I love not having to cook and clean on a cruise, and even though we've never cruised with our kids before, I think I would appreciate it even more not having to do that on vacation with them since I do all of that at home. This trip really is for them, but I should make it as fun as possible for me too! I don't mind driving at home, but maybe I won't really want to at WDW. Staying onsite would at least give me that option.

So even though I could do this cheaper, I think I decided I want to "plan" for a 6 or 7 night trip onsite at a moderate resort, most likely POFQ, but I'll do some more research to see if I find one I like better and cheaper than the royal room at POR or POFQ. I'll research the values too, but i think i would prefer a moderate. The main reason for going this route instead of renting DVC is that I want the convenience of being able to change my mind up to 45 days before the trip. So if my car explodes in March, in April I could either find a good last minute deal offsite or switch to 3 nights in a value resort and just go to MK and Epcot, my girls will have fun no matter how long we stay. As nice as it would be to stay in a deluxe resort (except for that pullout sofa!) POFQ seems to be a nice compromise - the only thing I would really miss would be the microwave. But the main thing is that I can save up and pay for everything over time by booking the package. Now, depending on how much I save up between now and August, I still may go the DVC route, just to have about a third of my trip already paid for, which would be nice. So I may end up going with option 4 after all. But I think my goal will be to book a 7 night package, then drop a day if I decide I want to save a bit of money. I have well over a year to save up for this trip, I think I have finally given in to paying a little more for the convenience of onsite! Knowing how frugal I am, this is a big deal! :rotfl2: But since I don't anticipate this being our only Disney trip, maybe offsite would make a bit more sense when my girls are older and we really might need the space, and once I was a little more familiar with how to get around the area.

I feel pretty good about my decision, planning to book a package will give me a lot of flexibility. Now I'll just focus on learning more about the different moderate resorts and start our savings plan!

Oh and when I looked at the current prices for POFQ in the cheapest room, it ended up being about $800 more than my cheapest offsite option for 7 days, I think about $400 more for a 6 day, so not too bad.

I am wrestling with the same decision, though my price differences are almost too much to even consider "splurging". I have a family of 6 so our options are fairly limited on-site. We can get the military rate but even with it we'd be spending $1300/wk on site MORE (@ AoA in a family suite or @ the Fort Wilderness Cabins -both came out to $1800-ish w/discount) than offsite in a time share by using the Armed Forces Vacation Club ($400)... It's about $1100 wk/less than onsite for Bonnet Creek through VS ($650-ish) -we stayed @ BC last time and loved it and $900 wk/less for a condo in WH (about $800/wk), or a town home is still about $500 less.

$500-1300 savings is A LOT. But this is likely our last trip to Disney World for awhile as we will be moving back to the west coast and will visit Disneyland instead so the desire to stay on-site and fully immerse in the magic is strong.

It really is about what you consider to be of value. For some people $400 more for 6 days is almost their entire dining budget or the cost of doing Cirque. When you start to think in terms of what else you could do with that money, it can have a big influence on whether you choose to stay onsite.

I think you need to sit down and prioritize what you want from your vacation. If the dollar differences are of low importance to you, then think about the other factors: space, ease of access to/from the parks, theming, amenities, etc.

Some people don't like DVC because you don't get housekeeping everyday. Some people don't mind it at all. Some people like to spend their money on experiences or dining while others find staying onsite is worth the cost. Split stays can be time-consuming and annoying for some people. Others like being able to try out new resorts in one trip.

ETA: I see by your subsequent post that you've decided to stay onsite in a regular room. Your reason for doing this makes sense to me. I think that you'll be happy wherever you decide to stay. Now to pick a moderate resort....did you look at CBR and CSR, too?
No one is going to be able to make up your mind for you. I can make a case for any of the choices that you listed. I can also find the negatives in each one.

Congratulations on your decision. I don't think you will regret it at all. And you never know. After you book your package, keep an eye out for discounts. You can always try to apply discounts that become available, or cancel and rebook with the discount.

I think you have made a great choice and I think your girls will be excited to be in the disney bubble . I don't blame you for wanting the dining plan - we never stay without it. And maybe you will get lucky and get a free dining pin or discounted room rate . We have got free dining the past 5 years and it saves me a ton of money!

Have you tried to get a package at Shades of Green? We are not military, so not allowed to stay there but I understand that this resort provides a more affordable Disney alternative for military families.

I would try to do six park days, regardless of other factors. Two MK, two Epcot, and one each for HS and AK. We only had one Epcot day and missed so much there.
In your situation, you will love the dining plan. I assume you will do a lot of character meals, and it will be worth it. Have a great trip!

This is also our preferred park plan.
