On Oprah today, (friday)

Thanks for the heads up. I'll have to pop a tape in the VCR.

please post on this thread after the show and let us know what happened - thanks

Thanks for the heads up, Vija, I have my Tivo set now! :)

Thanks!

I popped in to see if anyone had posted about this show. I've been watching and it's really hitting home with me because diabetes is so prevalent in my family. I've been slacking off on my program the last week or so because we're cleaning & packing the house to sell it and move. I've tried to watch my food, but have really increased my pop intake. :( This is "scaring me straight".

It's also a bit alarming to me because they mentioned that one of the early signs of diabetes in children can be stomach aches, and my ds (the KING OF SUGAR -- for example, my mil taught him to enjoy waffles with syrup AND powdered sugar!!) has a stomach ache every day. I don't know if it's a precursor to diabetes, but I've got to get this kid off of sugar!

Even though I've been pursuing a healthier way of life, this show was a serious wake-up call for me.

EDITED TO ADD: There's a risk calculator available at oprah.com for anyone who's interested. :)

Amy, I understand how stressful it is to pack & move. I just did it in February. It's so easy to resort to convenience foods & such when you just don't have the time to prepare the good foods.

I hope you can get back to a healthier way.

It scares me too about my DD7. She is ALWAYS hungry & likes candy, fruit snacks & loves french toast w/maple syrup AND powdered sugar too  I have a couple of cases of diabetes in my family (grandfathr & aunt) my DH has one (uncle passed away from complications of diabetes). Maybe we can work together to figure out a way to get our children eating healthier. I would love to share tips with you. I can tell you that she had s/f jello with s/f cool whip today & loved it. I hope thats a step in the right direction. I allow her a snack but if she's still hungry after that, she must eat fruit. I just worry about the sugars in fruit.

It's a toughie. This is long. Good luck with th move.:p

I saw this yesterday and it the sugar sticking to your arteries has shocked me back into reality. It just sounded gross as well as unhealthy. I am getting myself off the sugar. I may need some support on this one. I never used to have a sweet tooth, but when I am stressed this is what I grab.
