so i admit that i am completly hooked on those stinkin' clear stamps. like i just can't get enough of them.

what ink are you all using on them? dye or pigment? i was using the dye based ink and it seems to bead up before i get it to the paper. and a few of the pigment ones i've tried make it too inky. i tried putting very little but still makes it where i don't like the look of it.

I use the cats eye or versa inks (forgot, I also use the studio G inks) on mine... do you dab them or wipe the ink on?
I turn the stamp over so it's facing the ceiling and than wipe the ink pad across my stamp... so it just gets the raised areas..... I don't know that it helps...but I haven't noticed the problems you mentioned...

I too have been using the Studio G inks. They work really well. I hadn't even thought of the catseyes! Thanks for the great idea!

Also if I am making a card and I want something darker I use stazon stamp pads. They are really nice.

Ok, both Cats eye and studio g are pigment inks..
while I was downstairs looking... I came across another brand I have used.. stampabilities (from HL) it's an acid free pigment ink as are the others...

Studio g is also a pigment ink. Again for something darker you can try stazon. This is a solvent ink and will work on non-porous items as well.

You can find the studio g's at J's, M's, and ACM. They run $1 each. You can also find them sold in sets online for a bit of a discount.

The ink beads when I use the SU inkers. I used Staz-on on one yesterday and it worked great. I guess I need more Staz-on colors

I know exactly what you are talking about with the beading of the ink. I have tons of different inks that I use on the clear stamps. The pigment ones seem to work the best, but you have to heat set them. I too have used the Studio G inks with some success.

Just some tips I have read/heard about clear stamps:
Not all clear stamps are the same - some companies stamps are actually too slick for any ink to adhere. If you find that every ink is beading on it, then you can take a very fine sandpaper to rough the surface a little.

Because clear stamps are not as "absorbent" as rubber stamps, you shouldn't smear ink on, but rather dab it a couple of times. Unlike rubber stamps, the more ink you put on clear stamps, the worse the beading will be.

Most clear stamps are more pliable than rubber stamps, so you shouldn't apply much pressure when stamping. Depending on the clear block's weight, you can just place the stamp on the paper to get a clean image - if you stamp too hard, it will distort the image.


That's all I can think of right now. I hope that helps - and aren't Duh! statements - when I first started getting into clear stamps, I had to relearn stamping. I made tons of mistakes before learning that clear stamping is a different art than rubber stamping. But I love clear stamps soooo much that I actually sometimes hate to buy a rubber stamp because I wish it was in clear!

Cat's eyes also come in a chalk ink for a softer image.

There is a hybrid ink pad that a friend of mine loves called pallette. It's a mix between dye and pigment.

I usually use pigment although I hate the dry time. I can't live without my stazon and versamark!

I will "season" my clear stamps before I use them by inking them up really good and stamping off onto a my blotter pad a couple of times. That usually solves the beading problem, especially on the cheaper stamps.

Two more stamping tips from my stamping girlfriends?:
1.If your ink seems to have dried, especially when inking up large stamps, breathe on it and the moisture from your stamp will refresh the ink.

2. Use a phone book under the item you are stamping on as a cushion to get a crisp image. You can also use a foam sheet from the craft store as well.

And one learned in desperation - stazon ink cleaner will take stazon ink off! Stazon ink tends to be on the juicy side, especially when stamping on a non porous surface. If you get a smudged image use the stamp cleaner right on your item and wipe off.
