? on ideas on Wedding Gift for son

My stepson got married six years ago and we gave a flat amount of cash that they used to pay for the rehearsal dinner and Disneymoon.

My husband and I eloped 24 years ago and my parents gave us cash and his Dad gave us well wishes. 🤣

Do what you are comfortable with. When we got married (9.5 years ago now), my parents paid for everything, including rehearsal dinner. All in, this ran into the 6 figures. My parents also gave us a very expensive Dyson from my registry for the bridal shower and the $ 5,000 for a wedding gift. My in-laws gave us $500 (they are in a financial situation similar to, if not better than, that of my parents). My husband was embarrassed as we opened the gifts after our honeymoon but I suggested he let it go and not say anything. Almost a month later, his parents ended up asking how much my parents gave us and then they handed him a check for $4,500.

I think it really depends on what you are comfortable with. If you are paying for some wedding expenses that's a big factor too. And certainly how comfortable you are financially and how comfortable your child and new spouse are financially would be factors. I think how you feel about the wedding being planned, the honeymoon being planned, if there is something in particular you'd like to give the couple, and what you think they would do with cash, etc. are all factors too.

My parents paid for our whole wedding (about 120 people -- mostly their friends and relatives on my side of the family. We invited maybe 10 of our friends and on my in-laws side about 10 people traveled. The wedding was in my parent's city (We had just moved to a new state a great job opportunity for DH and I was able to line up a really good job before our move). My parents also gave us a washer and dryer and some great bikes as they knew we lived right next to a great 10 mile bike path and were looking at purchasing some. With our having good jobs, etc. they wanted to give us something we could use, not give us cash that we would just invest. My in-laws who were not as comfortable financially as my parents paid for a rehearsal breakfast for 30 and later had a reception for us in their home town inviting relatives and their friends (about 60 people) and didn't do a gift on top of that (which was fine).
