OMG!!! I am so upset with myself....

Even with the fans running I would go rent a rug shampooer. Start running it over the carpet. You'll be amazed at how much you suck out and very quickly. This will help prevent the water from penetrating down into your sub flooring and having mold and mildew forming in the sub flooring.

My husband has done this--TWICE! He likes to thaw things under running water in the sink. That groovy--if you stay in the kitchen to monitor it! He doesn't. and the sink overflows and floods the basement--the newly remodeled basement. :confused3

We had a water leak, I used a portable rug shampoo'er and I rented a wet/dry vac. Then I had the dehumidifier running, they sell for about $100.

Put on the fans. The problem is if you are away and come home with it moldy, Gee the only time I saw a huge problem on the Show where people are house hunting. A bank owned home had a sewer back up in the basement bathroom and the total cost to clean that up was under a Disney trip.

I think dh was upset and blew it out of proportion. As far as insurance. I could get for the carpets when the Ice dams leaked into the dry wall, and three walls of repair. Things attached.
I know the total damage was $2,700 for three rooms with the drywall, But really I did not rip them out, I painted with Kilz the water marks, and repainted, I did replace carpets as they were due. I bought a silver color when we moved in...no driveway paved, it was red rock so the carpets were a mess no matter what I did to prevent shoes in the house.

I remeber once when I rented leaving the tub on, the kitchen light started leaking water before I knew what was up. I turned to elec up. it was hard wood floors, so I mopped.

Another time, I had the type of furnace you had to put water in. I added water a cold night, went to bed, woke up to a downstairs of water. I did not tighten the knob and water was coming out of the radiators.

They were 11' X 14' so I lifted the edges. after using a wet/dry vac maintance lent me. Stayed at my parents that day as the window were open and fan on to dry things out. It was fine when dry.

your destructive (joking) hehe

Honestly so long as you have it treated now you should be ok the danger with water damage is not cleaning and drying it up.

We all have those moments that we wish we could do over, so don't be too hard on yourself. We has a leak in our wall upstairs, the first plummer that came out could not find the source of the leak, and cut out several sections of dry wall...long story short after several days of leaking the water had ruined our floor upstairs and the ceiling of the kitchen downstairs. Had to have a lot of dry wall replaced and flooring and sub-flooring. Had a company come out to dry everything, and our Home owners insurance covered everything but the plummers bill (minus our deductable).

Your home owners insurance should cover this. My daughter when she was 4 kept the water dispenser on our fridge pushed down and flooded our kitchen floor. I was upstairs helping my older son with a project for school on the computer. Later my daughter came upstairs and I didn't go down and discover the water for another hour. We had laminate flooring. The water seeped under the flooring and warped the floor. Since it was glued, the entire floor had to be replaced. We just paid our deductible and actually had very nice big tiles put in instead. Our insurance company was great.

My neighbor left the water in her little sink in her island running while she ran outside to help her daughter that was crying. She ended up staying outside for 3 hours with her daughters! When she came in the water had not only flooded her kitchen and sunken family room, but ruined her finished basement as well. When she went downstairs, water was pouring out of her recessed lighting. Her insurance company fixed everything, she just paid her deductible. She had real hard wood in the kitchen and family room and at first they thought it could be salvaged, but it warped. She re-did the hardwood in her family room, but put tile in her kitchen.

I'm so sorry this happened to you. Hopefully the carpet can be saved or you can replace it cheaper... For ongoing, try my new mantra, which I tell my kids almost every day. "When you rush, you make mistakes."

It is so true, and has really helped me slow down. I've done my fair share of silly things b/c I'm in such a hurry, including breaking my car's bumper badly when backing out of the garage. Now, I repeat my mantra whenever I'm rushed. It really helps. Best of luck to you!

I am so sorry you had this happen. Let the professionals do the drying process and replace the carpet and whatever else needs to be done through your homeowners. We had a pipe break last Memorial day weekend while we were out of town. Water ran for 3 days! We were out of the house for 5 months while they basically rebuilt the inside from the basement up. I had a bad summer for sure but all is perfect now, all pretty and new. There is a bright side! I won't lie there were some very bad days during the process but for now just know the end is very nice.

Maybe after you pay the deductible you could downgrade your trip a little and still go? That is what we did last summer. Good luck. Let the fans and dehumidifiers run even if they are LOUD they help!

Thanks everyone for your support! I know this will all work out for my good. I will keep you posted. The adjuster cannnot come out until March 8th so I guess we will know more specifics then.

They are loud, and generate a lot of heat. That's why our insurance company agreet to put us up in a hotel. It was like having a mini-vacation. We stayed there during the night but came home during the day. It was our first time staying at an Ayers hotel and we were surprised at how nice it was. The free breakfast came in handy in the a.m. We would stop in on the way to taking DD to school.

I did this too, well i moved the freg and the water line broke i left the house for 2 hours came back to water pouring thur the ceiling to the down stairs, i was so sad, but i got new carpet out of it..... and it only end up costing me 200 something because i did most of the drying out and removing of wet crappy junk lol

think hubby would have killed me if it killed his big screen tv, that was only 2.5 feet from my pretty waterfall:scared1:
