Olympus OM-D EM-5 (Mirrorless)

Lynn, those are some fantastic shots!

Awww, thanks!:flower3:

Thanks for the welcome. I've been lurking around here long enough, I figured I'd better join.

I LOVE the OM-D! We have the Olympus E-620. It's terrible in low light and pretty slow to focus, in my experience. The OM-D is soooooooo fast and I'm loving the touch screen.

We went back and forth on the adapter vs flash.

I have the E-600 and use the 12-60mm on it 95% of the time. It was my favorite lens, but now the m4/3 45mm is at least at a tie with it. the E-600 focuses very quickly with the 12-60 and when I use the kit lens on it, there is a noticeable slowdown in focusing.

Have you checked out the 45mm f/1.8? It is an absolutely fantastic lens!!

Agree! Here's an example from the Polynesian Cultural Center on Oahu.

By the way, it's been confirmed that the OM-D's sensor is made by Sony.

We have it on order and it should arrive Thursday. I can't wait to play with it.

Lynn, I love that shot from Oahu with it! Now I'm even more excited.

Latest news from the rumor mills:

High End (whatever that means) OM-D within 6 months and the price of the E-M5 to drop this winter.

If the latter turns out to be true I'll be one happy boy!!

LOL. You'd better be ready to get your name on a pre-order list the day its announced. People are still having trouble finding this camera!

Once the "high-end" one comes out, expect to see a lot of people (probably including me) selling their OM-D's to fund the new one :lmao: :cool1:

I don't know what else I would want in a camera to be honest. When we went to Hawaii I never once attached the flash. A couple of times I needed fill in but used the E-PL2 with the onboard flash, but I could've gotten by without it.

The high ISO performance and IBIS work great! Here's a one second exposure of fireworks over Waikiki, ISO 400, taken with the 12-50mm - handheld.

It might be nice to have a built-in flash like the E-PL2 that can be bounced, but I wouldn't upgrade just for that. 9 fps is also fast enough for me. I may buy the grip, but I want to use the camera a few months more to see if I really feel the need for it.

If they do come out with a higher end OM-D, there may be a few used EM-5's put up for sale.

Here's a couple of photos I took with ISO 25,600, after cleaning up in LR. Don't ask me how I got it set at 25,600. Still haven't figured out how it happened, but I must have turned a control wheel somewhere.:confused3

I have the high ISO set to 6400 and I feel comfortable with that.

It's a great camera! My E600 just feels too heavy and big now.

Since buying this camera, I have found less need to mess around with my raw footage. Except in some low light situations where I might need a bit of noise ninja, my jpegs look better than I could have done with raw!

I've also found the 12-50 to be the perfect walkaround lense. I got the FL-300R lens with the rebate which is great because you can tilt it up to bounce the flash. I've been eyeing the FL-600R though since it comes w/ an LED light for taking videos....decisions, decisions......

Glad you like the camera! JPEGs have always been an Olympus strong suit, at least on the newer models. I rarely use RAW anymore. (i use an E30 and a PEN currently.)

So I am back. SOme of you know I bought and returned to OM-D last month. As a long time Oly user (using a E3 these days) I for some reason could not get comfortable with it and so I knew it was not the camera for me.

Since I returned it I picked up the Nikon P510. Great camera but not happy with the photo results. I miss the sharpness and color of Oly cameras I suppose so now I am researching the EPL-3.

How does this camera differ in regards to the menu system and comfort of use level? What are the pros and cons of the camera?

What to do, what to do? :confused3

If you aren't in a rush you could wait until next month when Olympus will announce at least 2 new PEN camera's, the E-PM2 and either the E-P3 or E-PL3. I'd assume they will have the new sensor.

We have the E-PL1. There is a Dummies book for it. Despite having an E510 and an E30, it took me a while to figure out how to work it. (Still not 100%. Often in a rush I cannot find the settings I want so I tend to keep it on Auto a lot, unlike my dSLR which I am very comfortable finding manual settings for, even in the dark.) I literally sat down with the Dummies book and went step by step to get the basics down. Because there are not as many knobs and buttons, you have to learn to use the controls differently. It's confounding at times. :lmao: But it takes a very nice picture, so I'm relatively happy with it (and the family loves it). Like anything else, it takes a lot of practice to get good at it.

Personally, if I were you, I'd stick with your original choice, as, IMO (and if you're like me), you're going to have the same issues working the PEN that you had with the E-M5 - or any other mirrorless, given that they're all smaller and controls are condensed and technology is becoming more complex. Your ultimate results, despite whatever painful process you have to go through with whichever camera you choose, are going to be best with the E-M5 long term thanks to the new sensor. (Although the sensor in the PEN isn't bad, same one that's in my E30, improved over the E510. Not sure if the same one that's in your E3.) I agree I love my Olys and I would have difficulty switching at this point. So I say you try it again and just know it's going to take a while to learn to use it. At least you have your vast experience with Oly menu basics and terms, and a lot of help here now with others who have the camera.

I'd like to buy an E-M5 myself at some point but dread the learning curve. (And am fairly happy with the set up I have now. It would probably be more of a "fun" purchase.) Wish it were simpler sometimes. In my next life I hope to be born technically savvy!

Ah, hadn't considered that. Good point. Something to research and consider.

Thanks Joe - Didn't know about these either. Is this a rumor or pretty confirmed? I am in no hurry so I may just take the Nikon back and set the money aside for now.

You make some very good points. May have to sit back and just think this whole thing through better than I have apparently done so far LOL

No confirmation from Olympus but it's a safe bet that come mid to late August they will announce at least 2 new PEN cameras and possible the XZ-2 camera and the 60mm m4/3 macro lens. Those will then be showcased at Photokina in September.

This is just my own speculation from what I've read over the past month.

So Amazon has the EPL-2 for $379.00 so now I am considering this camera as well. I still like the idea of using my 4/3 lens with the convertor. The Xz-1 is coming in at $400. So not much different in price.

Anyone have it? Pros/cons? I just want a purse size camera for when we are out and about and traveling where I shouldn't be carrying the E3.

Just editing to add that I checked cameta.com and they have a silver and a white refurbished E-PL2 with the 14-42mm lens for $299.95, free shipping.

I have it but it did take a while to become comfortable with it after using the E520 and the E600. I love my OM-D but probably would have had the same adjustment to that if I had gone directly from the E600.

Here are links to our Disney World trip in December where I only took the E-PL2. I believe most of the pictures were taken with the 14-150 lens. I had meant to take along the Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 but picked up the 4/3 25mm pancake instead.:roll eyes: In the Osborne Lights pictures, I started out using a small travel tripod but soon ditched that and took the rest of them handheld. I've never been comfortable using a tripod for some reason. All of the castle lights and Finding Nemo show were handheld.

Also Costco.com has the E-PL2 for $299.99 and free shipping plus a 4gb card.

Can anyone offer advice on picking one lens - Oly 45mm OR Oly 40-150mm - before my Sept. trip? From the pics I've seen, the 45mm is the lens to have, but I worry it will be too restrictive inside the parks. And, I think away from Disney it will be my lens of choice. I understand that with a prime, my feet are my zoom, but the further I move back, the more likely I'll have crowd traffic moving between me and my subject(s).

Thanks in advance.

Have: e-pl2 + 14-42mm II + Pany 20mm

Like with any interchangable lens camera, you will have trouble in low light using just one lens if you pick the 40-150 tele lens. In daylight it will be better.

For low light, you should use your other lenses. I would bring all. The beauty of this set up is that they should be fairly small and light.

If you absolutely have to bring just one, bring the 14-45 if you want to be relatively happy with most of your shots. JMO
