Olympus Evolt Series

I had written a week and a half ago that I had ordered the E510, but I cancelled it all before it was sent. :sad2: I'm very disappointed, but I the news came about the Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac, Lehman Bros, WAMU, etc, bailout, and I decided this just isn't the time for me to spend $600 on what is essentially (for me) a toy.

If my DH's business takes off as we hope I will reorder it in November/December. Here's hoping...

In the meantime I will continue to live vicariously through ya'll.:)

Aww, I'm sorry. What a bummer. Maybe you can make it a ..... holiday gift?

Budmonster, love the apple picture. There aren't a lot of us on this board. Did I see you mention on another thread you were thinking of going with another brand? It's funny, I think it was on dpreview/Oly SLR Forum there was a thread last week about the E300/E500 and a lot of people who upgraded to the 500 said they missed their 300s. :confused3 Have you looked at the E520?

Just a few more from the lake. Taken with 70-300.

Great shots... Don't you just love the 70-300?

I would like the 70-300 more if I had IS. It's difficult trying to hold it steady zoomed out ( no matter what type of camera you have ) at 300mm. It's a fun lens but there's a learning curve.

Thought you guys might enjoy seeing these, taken using my Zuiko 24mm f/2.8 "pancake" lens, straight from the camera, no editing. I do like to use the Vivid setting, but I believe using the prime delivers even more color. Feel free to critique, I'm still in learning mode.

Thanks for the complement about the apple pic, I was board and playing with my camera.
I had briefly thought about switching over to Canon, but then the more I thought about it the more I kept asking myself WHY? I love Olympus. So I'm going to stick with Olympus, they haven't let me down so far. As for the E-520 I have looked over the spec on the Olympus website, but I haven't seen it in person. Like the PP said with the economy right now I have a hard time spending that much money on a toy. I have patients I'll wait and see what comes out next year.

Pea-n-mea love the colours!

You don't really own all those knitted finger puppets do you? And where did you find any sun with the weather in these parts of late? Go away rain!

I know, what awful weather we're having! And to make matters worse, I'm home sick.

But no, the pic of the finger puppets was taken at a fair. I was playing around with the pancake. I'm impressed with the color, but I'm still not sure when to use it sometimes. In playing around, I'm finding out a lot about what and how I like to shoot. I definitely like close ups, and that makes it a little hard sometimes with a prime. Definitely glad I got it, though.

Hi!:wave2: Can I join here? I just bought an E520, my first DSLR. The battery has just finished charging, so I'll play around with it tomorrow. I don't have any memory cards though! Just ordered 3 Sandisk CF cards with the rebate, but there's a 7-9 business day delivery. Tomorrow I'll pick up an XD card too, though.

Has anyone used the panoramic mode with this camera? DH has an Oly 1020 and took a few panoramic shots when we went to the Smokies and it was easy to use. I was just wondering how they came out with the E520. That's the main reason I'm picking up the XD card.

I think I'll be reading back through this thread for a while!

Lynn

Congratulations, pugrpooh, and welcome to the Olympus family! :goodvibes

I'm glad you found the articles and links helpful.

Let us know how you're doing, and be sure to post some PICTURES soon!!

Whoo! I just finished reading this whole thread plus some of the articles that were linked in some of the posts. I've taken a few shots inside with my e520 but mostly I've been reading and familiarizing myself with the settings.

I've printed out wrotniak's recommendations on the settings for the e510 and 520 and I've worked my way through some of them. I know I could just go out and start shooting in auto or the scene modes, but if I become too familiar with those, I might not take the time to learn what all this camera can do and use all the features it has.

I have a few outings planned for this weekend so that will be my first big test with this camera.

I know I'll be back here with questions!

Lynn

Excellent!! Enjoy your time out this weekend.

While you are out, you can experiment with aperture (A setting) and shutter (S setting) modes. It was confusing for me at first but now it is becoming second nature. There is no better way to learn than actually doing it.

Enjoy the new camera!!!

How are things going, pugrpooh? Any keepers yet?

Maybe a few from yesterday. We're getting ready to head out for a fall festival soon at a historic home and then a tea party at Churchill Downs so I'm hoping to get some really nice shots.

For the life of me yesterday, I couldn't choose the continuous focus mode in any of the settings. I tried everything from manual mode to auto mode and it was greyed out in everything.:confused3 This morning I turned the camera on to try again, and it worked fine. So if you have any thoughts on what I was doing wrong yesterday, please send them my way! I want to understand this camera.

Looks really good to me!!

Is the lens in the picture the kit lens?

Not a kit lens there. It's a newer version of 14-54, it's rumored to retail between $500.00-$600.00. They say the new model (body only) will retail around $1200.00. IMO, that's one of my biggest issue with Olympus is it costs soooo much! I would love to upgrade but I need a camera that's weatherproof like the E-3 because my DW likes to go to WDW during the rainy season.
