Olympus Evolt Series

Just purchased a E-510 still going through this thread and enjoying the information you all have provided.

Travis

Congratulations and Welcome, Travis. Looking forward to your participation (and Joe's?). :thumbsup2

How is everyone coming along with their shooting? I feel like I'm making a little progress. I think, for me, learning to use a dSLR was a huge challenge because it was not only expanding my knowledge of photography basics but also learning the technical aspects of the camera as well as the editing programs. :faint: So it's been a very busy year for me with this hobby with lots of frustrations along the way. I'm still not completely proficient with the technical aspects, probably more so than anything. Shooting is coming along for the most part and seems to go pretty well when I can get everything to work the way I want it to. But that's not all the time. :lmao:

Would love to see some of your shots. Let's get this thread going again.

Here are some recent ones I took:

This camera is awesome and overwhelming! A friend asked me to take Christmas pictures of her 4 kids. I did them (and was pleased with how they turned out-- as was the mom!), but, wow. I know nothing about how to use all the bells and whistles. And I could not remember how to force the flash. Didn't set the white balance, so that was off. Lighting was not ideal. Oy. I need to sit down with that manual and get some stuff figured out. But in spite of all that I was having so much fun! I can't really post pictures of someone else's kids on the internet, but I have some pictures from around my yard and neighborhood that I took the day/day after I got my camera:

Nice pictures Pea-N-Me and ElizK! Pea-N-Me, did you use a CP with the fish photo?

Did anyone see Circuit City's ad yesterday? They had the E520 on sale and it was a closeout with no rainchecks! You think Olympus is getting ready to come out with a new model or is CC trimming their product lines?

Probably both.

Olympus is coming out with the E30 which will be a tweener of the 520 and their pro model....the E3

I don't think they'll replace the 520 with the E30. It's twice as expensive as I paid for my 520 with 2 lenses. I know as a very novice DSLR shooter, I wouldn't have considered such an expensive camera at first.

Maybe they'll add IS to the 420 and do away with the 5xx series? I can't see them doing away with the 5xx series though, (maybe because I love mine so much?;)

The E30 does sound like a nice camera and maybe I'll upgrade in a few years after I feel like I've reached my limit with the 520.

No filter. I shot those three using Manual Mode, though. I've found I can get better exposures that way. (Thankfully I think I'm finally figuring out how to get better exposures outside of manual mode, too.)

I wonder if it's because CC is going out of business?

We had a Circuit City close where we live and had to stop by (actually 4 times) The last two days the store was open they only had Olympus cameras left. The 520 sold for $385. The Sony A200 sold for $349(it sold out a couple of days earlier). I missed out on getting a flash by a few minutes for $85. I did buy a BLM-01 battery for $10 (even though it doesn't fit my model camera). I'm looking at getting a camera that's built like a tank and has seals for harsh weather. Also bought CF 4g for $9.

So far the Circuit City near me hasn't made any notice of closing yet. I sure wouldn't mind getting the FL36 flash for $85

For those out there that follows the Olympus forums over at DP Review, take a look at www.fourthirdsphoto.com. Not a very fast moving site but lots of information from some very helpful people. Check out some photos of screen name "Bootstrap" Bill Turner. He has some amazing photos, but he's just one of the few.

There's a CC closing by me and I went up shortly after they announced it, but there weren't any Oly cameras left. I was looking specifically for a new lens. Maybe I should go back to look for a flash too. At that time, most items were only marked down up to 20%.

The CC by us only carries the 40-150 zoom lens and it sold for around $75 but it's one that I don't use anymore. We have a box store called "Fry's" they clearanced the 14-42 for $45. I don't know what kind of memory cards everyone uses but I use both a CF and the XD in my camera. Both together gives me almost 500 photos. The XD were really cheap at CC.

I took these photos the day before it's going too get cold. This morning it's 29 degrees outside with a predicted of around 40. DS was feeding the gulls for me. Here the photos are with a 70-300 lens.
