Olympus Evolt Series

Also wanted to mention that Dell finally shipped my pancake lens and I should be getting it soon. Can't wait to try it out!

Wow, seems like you ordered that ages ago!

Thanks for the invite!!

I just recently purchased the E510 and love it!!!

Can anyone recommend a good low light lens.... I've been looking at:

Oly Zuiko 50mm F/2

Sigma 30mm F/1.4

I have the Oly 50mm and it's sharp and fast. Authorized retailers are offering instant rebates on many different lenses including that one.
I'm going to take another at the Sigma 30mm and also the Sigma 24mm f/1.8 this weekend. The 24mm has been getting good reviews from others.
Congrats on the 510

Bumping up for new Oly users and those thinking of buying.

oogieboogieman, any pictures to show us from that great trip of yours?

Here is a shot from our current Panama Crossing cruise using the Oly Zuiko 50-200m/2.8. Granted I was pretty close to the stage and had to work hard to not blow out the whites, but overall I am happy with the performance. There is no post processing on the picture

Holy Cow, Marian - you've got some beautiful shots there! :worship:

When you say you had to work hard at not blowing out the whites, would you mind sharing exactly what you did?

Also any other tips to getting such beautiful shots? Are you using the Vivid colors setting on your 510? I take it you're not doing a lot of post processing? Do you use the "setting tweaks" recommended by Wortniak?

Again, really great work.

Pea -- thanks so much for the nice comments. The settings are below, but the real answer to my amature skills are kill lots of electrons trying out various settings. I lusted after the 50-200mm until one week before the trip so I am really just learning how to make it work. Alan on the Oly yahoo group was right, it is heavy and too much for walking around all the time. 70-300 is probably a better choice.

All that said, for the Allie/AJ shot:
ISO 400
f/3.4
Metered matrix -- seems to be the hardest setting to get right
No pushing of the colour saturation.

Most of the others (on flickr) are @ ISO 800

It will be interesting to see what the Nikon & Canon guys were able to do w/their equipment. There was some pretty serious gear on board as well as talent. Near as I could tell I was the lone Oly DSLR, although the little underwater guys (which I have too) are every where.

Off to get ready for Captain's dinner. It sure has been the trip of a life time!

Best
Marian

I've been shooting in Vivid Mode as I tend to like bright colors. But I'm wondering if the second photo here had a little too much color (none added additionally)? I liked it anyway, and I shot it in RAW so I think I can still change it a bit.

Oogieboogieman is still wrestling with the finer points of PhotoBucket. ;)
I will brag and say he got some REALLY nice pics. Hopefully he will be along to share them with you soon!

Wow, very nice, oogieboogieman! :goodvibes Great work on the fire shot, that's a really tough one to get - what settings and lens did you use for that? Can you pull up the EXIF data on Photobucket (I think there's a link under the picture.) I still have to finish reading jsg's trip report. It so made us want to be there!

I like them -- how do you like shooting RAW? Worth the effort?
I don't know. The first time I tried it it was really quite a production. (Read about it here.) The shots I posted last night was only the second time I tried it and it did seem to go a little smoother. It is nice to have the control but I don't think I really enjoy post processing too much, maybe once in a while as needed. If I can figure out how to do it more easily, though, I might do it more often. I guess I'm still just experimenting with a lot of different things. Seems the more you learn, the more confusing it gets. :rotfl:

I realized after you posted the other night, Marian, that you were on the Magic. How was the trip? Any photos to share? Are all those beautiful shots of yours shot in JPEG?

That was taken with a 50mm f/2 lens, which is my favorite lens. I just recently started using the 14-42 more I just wish it was faster for lower light conditions.
For that photo I used...
Aperture Priority Mode
Iso 800
F/2
Metering ESP
W/B Tungsten
Shutter Speed 1/160

A lot of my photos didn't turn out very good, I was having issues with all the different lighting during the show.

Just having a little fun w/ my Oly 410!!! Sorry for not cropping, images were downloaded to Photobucket and haven't figured out how to edit. Shot with lit lens 14-42 .

While I don't have a true macro with enough zoom, I thought I would give my 70-300 a playtime. This is what I found while fishing at a local lake.

WOW! I'm thrilled to find this thread! I got this camera for Christmas last year and do not know anyone else who owns it. I find Rebel owners everywhere, but no one who has this camera.

It's my bedtime, but I'll be spending a lot of time in this thread tomorrow reading all the responses & looking at the pictures.

:wizard:

Nice, obm. Cool to see the wing movement in #2. How are you making out with your trip photos? :faint:

Lisa, welcome! Glad you found us. I'm lucky, I work with two people who also have the camera - well, one has a 510 and one has a 520, so we get to talk shop a lot. Would love to see some of your pictures!
