Olympics

I find it remarkable how much better the mental health is of the US gymnasts this time around. Good, no, GREAT for them. Now how about the gymnasts from the rest of the world? Oh, we don't care about that?

That's my point.
I'm confused. Precisely what did the U.S. gymnasts do to damage the mental health of the other gymnasts? Additionally, how is it the responsibility of the U.S. gymnasts to take care of the mental health of the others? I mean, outside of not actively trying to traumatize them or harm them in any way, what exactly are you suggesting they should do?

Yeah, I'm not seeing the reason for anger over the gymnastics stuff either.

Anyways, on a different, non-controversial note - did anyone watch any of the kayak cross event? That's some crazy stuff!!
That's an event I want to see. I'll have to try to track it down tonight if I have time. I'm still trying to work my way through the men's archery comp.

Please no one say what results are if you know. I'm avoiding finding out even though I know it's a few days old and trying to watch the matches play out to the end to find out the results.

Finals were sometime yesterday afternoon (US time). No spoilers from me, I promise. :)

Can't believe this isn't being discussed, but I found the medal ceremony for the Womens Gymnastics Floor to be completely distasteful. OK, so the three women who won are besties, but Jordan won on a technicality. Simone's routine was far from perfect. Then to bring race into it? At least the two US women might want to check their privilege.
I've seen some news articles mentioning that all three women on the podium were black (two Americans, one Brazilian), but are you saying that Biles or Chiles bragged about it? If not, then why are you dissing them over a comment made by someone else??

I see that you later called Biles' and Chiles' bowing "showboating." Wow, you're really misreading that moment. Every other online comment I've read about that moment was how it represented the true Olympics spirit by honoring someone who'd beaten you.

For the record, I did feel bad for the two Romanian competitors. (There had been a tie for third place, both Romanians. When Chiles' score was corrected, she moved up to third over both of them.) I recall a few times in the Olympics when a changed score or one felt to be unfair was discussed by commentators after the medal winners were announced, but generally everyone knows that things can shift in the minutes following an event and they don't make a big deal out of it.

I've been really enjoying track and field. The women's 5,000 meter race was crazy. The silver medalist got DQed after the race, but then got her medal re-instated after an appeal. The men's 10,000 meter race was super fast and so fun to watch. The men's 100 meters was a nail biter. World record in the pole vault! And of course, St. Lucia winning its first gold ever, for the women's 100 meters. I can't wait for the men's 200 meters to see if Noah Lyles can win both, and I'm rooting hard for Nikki Hiltz in the 1,500 meters.

Look, it stinks that the Romanian athlete thought that she had won the Bronze already, but adjustments can and do happen. Maybe they could have been quicker about it, but it is what it is. It happens all the time. I think Simone's bowing shows a lot of humility - I mean, she's the GOAT and she bows to a respected rival who beat her. That is the very definition of sportsmanship!

Spoilers for today's 1,500m heats results:

Americans Nikki Hiltz, Elle St. Pierre and Emily Mackay all advanced to Thursday's semifinal, along with with top contenders for gold like Kenyan Faith Kipyegon, Ethiopian Gudaf Tsegay and Great Britain's Laura Muir.

And in this case, yet another woman, who thought she got a medal, after that DQ, who then didn't. Is there outrage here too?
I saw no showboating, or any of the other behavior yesterday.

IDK if it's showboating, but I have to say I thought the goat necklace was kind of tacky. Doesn't make her an awful person. Simone is a tremendously accomplished athlete and I applaud her hard work and achievements. I simply think her accomplishments do all the talking necessary.

More and more I enjoy the more obscure sports we generally only get to see when the Olympics roll around. Too much goat herding in marquee sports all around for my taste.

I had that exact thought when I saw Nanci's posting about the 5K. Changes in the results happen a lot during the Olympics. As the current hosts would say, "C'est la vie."

Yeah. Me too.

Same.
Us Canadians are proud we got gold in the men and women’s hammer throwing. Lol.

I only saw the highlight replay of the men's champion throw. He won by a mile. That was also when I looked at my husband and said, is that really what hammer throw is? I guess I'd never actually seen the event before and never realized.

I had no clue either. I’d never seen it or heard of it before.
But apparently it’s been an event since 1900.

I'm quoting you to my husband. He ran track in HS and just looked at me like I'd sprouted another head when I said I had no idea what hammer throw even looked like.

I'm pretty sure they don't do hammer throw in HS track in most states. I know it's not an Ohio HS event, just discus and shot put. Probably too dangerous for high schoolers, especially for those around them. :p
