Olympics

Is Simone Biles pregnant? I saw an announcement somewhere (I think it was on Facebook) that she is, but since Facebook is so not reliable, and I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere else, I was wondering about it.

I'm pretty sure they don't do hammer throw in HS track in most states. I know it's not an Ohio HS event, just discus and shot put. Probably too dangerous for high schoolers, especially for those around them. :p
Not entirely sure, but I think my husband said they'd even tried it in PE class.

I know my HS track team didn't have the event, but I went to a smaller, parochial school. I doubt the schools offer it today. His cousin coaches discus throw for his old HS and the kids are trying that for the first time when practices start in the spring every year.

I did however have to do a unit of PE that included tumbling, rope climbing and, of all things, uneven bars in HS PE back in the day. My daughters found that incredible and TBH I still can't understand how or why that was ever included. Doesn't seem like the kind of thing you just step up to and say, eh, I'll give this a whirl.

I did see a bit of that yesterday. Very fun to watch! Interesting that the rules require a kayak roll.
YES! I am so bummed that's going to be contested in Oklahoma City in '28. That's about the most fun Olympic event ever.

Oklahoma City??? Does someone think there are no rivers in California???

Okay, I guess they have to build a dedicated "river" for the kayak events, but still, why not do it near Los Angeles???

Someone asked her about having children, but that’s all I’ve heard.

It was made mention that OKC already has some existing facilities "The partnership between the two cities, announced last week (this is from late June) in an updated venue plan from organizers, is a move designed to use existing sports facilities and keep costs down."

Softball is also going to OKC

“Oklahoma City has hosted many international competitions at our unique, world-class whitewater and softball venues,” Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt said. “We are confident we will be an outstanding partner to LA28 in creating a dynamic environment for Olympians and fans. We are excited about the opportunity to support one of America’s great global cities, Los Angeles, and work closely with the LA28 organizing committee to ensure that the 2028 Olympic Games are a success.”

HS track parent of 2, booster club officer, parent of HS track coach, worked on a national track website.

Hammer, Javelin and Steeplechase are very rare events in many states HS programs. Most have never even seen the events. DD and DS got to run Steeplechase at the Disney ESPN Track Meet ... having no training at all for it because our state doesn't have them. DS medaled. DD ended up doing it in college one season.

For the throws, danger is a REAL thing. I was at a college meet when "someone" who knew better yelled to a volunteer who was measuring, who then turned to look at them and proceeded to get impaled by a javelin. I was sick watching it live. He was punctured, taken to hospital but was okay.

You know what I havent seen the whole olympics. A false start. I remember them happening often years ago in both track and field and swimmimg. Has the rules changed? Do they still do restarts?

I was just watching the replay of the Womens Water Polo - USA/Hungary - great game!

The problem is that to really do it justice and to have spectators, it really takes an artificial course. Rivers have issues with conditions. If a river runs low or even dry that's going to be pretty bad, not to mention worries about environmental degradation from having thousands of spectators on the side of a river.

This is an artist's rendition of what's it's supposed to look like in OKC:

I remember playing some video games where everyone got 3 false starts. Then I saw the real world where the field got the first false start and anyone who did it after the first one was disqualified.

But yeah. It apparently got crazy with one competitor intentionally false starting to try and disrupt the other competitors, or perhaps someone trying to get an advantage by risking a false start.

I was just thinking about that they other day. We had a vault. I had zero business flying over it, with such a lack of skill. Trying to perfect the straddle vault move, over and over.

There was a false start in speed climbing yesterday that was supposed to have kicked them out of the event. Then they let them back in so one climber would not have to climb alone.

There was a starting error in a women's race yesterday. An American woman raised her hand to reset, but the officials missed it. They reviewed it and she was able to run and qualify.

I discovered what the hammer throw was about 30 years ago and was disappointed that it didn’t look like a “real” 🔨.

I could barely lift up the shot put when we tried it in HS. Maybe I threw it 3 feet tops.

Oh, yeah. We had to do it, too. We had to do vault, uneven bars, beam (and it was tall, not the short beam that little kids learn on), and the guys had a set of rings. It's a wonder no one broke their neck. We also tried shot and discus, and as I recall, there was more throwing of the items to each other than out into the field. Ah, the 70's and 80's. A simpler time, where no one gave a darn about kid's safety, lol.

Also on the parallel bars, the coach that comes out. Is that for visual or for safety. They really looked they would often be out of range if something happened.

Im gonna start to go back and watch the events they never put on tv and were Peacock only

That's most of what we've seen of the games. We enjoy watching a lot of the more "niche" competitions, for lack of a better term. We really enjoy getting into the competition and being able to watch it all play out. It really lets you appreciate what the athletes are doing and suddenly you find yourself invested in a different way in the outcome. I really enjoy seeing the camaraderie between the competitors in quite a few of the sports. It's really inspiring to watch them give their all and then turn around and appreciate what each other did, win or lose, because they obviously love their sport and they get excited when they see the results where everyone gave their best.

Some of the fun things to watch that are not the mainstream: kayak cross; women's free style wrestling; sport climbing; definitely watch the men's 1500m race that happened last night; the men's pole jump; women's discus.
