Olympics

US commentators yesterday mentioned it several times, something along the lines of the 6 point penalty punishes the team moreso than the coaches (who have been suspended).
OK - I guess they can say whatever they want. As for Canadians, I'd hope everyone involved just takes the consequences, with the appropriate degree of humility. :(

Classy move on his part, that's really cool of him to do.
Forget Simone Biles and Caeleb Dressel. The American stealing the show at the Paris Olympics is Flavor Flav.

The 65-year-old performer, whose real name is William Jonathan Drayton Jr., has been a fixture at the 2024 games thanks to his partnership with USA Water Polo.

The Public Enemy rapper has embraced his new role as “official hype man” of the women’s team, appearing poolside at the team’s matches wearing a water polo cap and Team USA branded waterproof clock necklace.

Under the terms of the sponsorship deal announced earlier this month, Flavor Flav will make multiple appearances at USA Water Polo events each year, as well as lend his social media presence to the team to help “amplify the sport’s reach and engage new audiences.”

“This is one of the biggest things that I feel that I could have ever done in life, outside of the other accomplishments that I’ve made to music,” he said in an interview with NBC Olympics. “By sponsoring a water polo team and helping these girls out, this is bigger than me winning a Grammy.”

The rapper first connected with the team in May after athlete Maggie Steffens posted on Instagram about the lengths to which she and her teammates have gone to make their Olympic dreams a reality in a sport that isn’t as widely popular as some others.

That's such a great story. What an odd pairing, but it's just so perfect too. I also love watching Water Polo - what a tough sport!

On a totally different vein (and if this should be moved to the controversial board please do so), but has anyone seen the stories of the Dutch volleyball player, Steven Van de Velde, who is a convicted sex offender against a minor and is allowed to participate in the games? I just read about this today so I may be very late to knowing about it. He doesn't have to do media. He is housed separately. But there are minors in Olympic Village. This seems crazy to me.

Side note: I'm loving the technology on the broadcasts, like seeing the 'M per S' speed of the swimmers and things like the distance and angle for the rugby conversions.
In diving it's really neat to see the multi-angles that go beyond just showing a different camera angle that they can use for replays, they've gotten a lot better over the years on tech.

Maybe they could pair up Snoop with Martha Stewart to announce some of the events? ..............LOL.

Sadly we now watch the Olympics and see an athlete perform above and beyond our automatic conclusion is drug enhancers. The Olympics are one of the most corrupt organizations and are long past standing up for what is right, for banning athletes across the board instead of just some countries, especially countries known for cheating. It is not even amateurs, which is what it was founded on.
not to mention:

1. The ridiculous disparity in allowing men comfortable shorts/uniforms to compete while insisting women be on display for men's pleasure in skimpy, restrictive, tight uniforms - comfort be damned. aka beach volleyball and gymastics. The competitors have tried protesting for more comfortable attire to no avail: the O senior leadership is a bunch of sexist old men.

2. The serious eating and body dysmorphic disorders prevalent in women's sports like gymnastics and ice skating. Gracie Gold's memoir - Out of Shape Worthless Loser was hardly an eye-opener, as much of this was long known in the sport, but still a sobering read.)

Not to mention the swim suits that look like thong/wedgie backs.

Then the photographers are asked not to video record close ups of those areas.

Actually, I do not believe that the IOC determines sport-by-sport rules on attire, but rather the governing bodies of each individual sport. FIG I believe controls the gymnastics uniforms, just as FINA banned the "speed suits" from swimming a few years ago. That doesn't make the disparity any better of course and the IOC could likely bring pressure to bear if they wanted to.

Personally, I think they should make the men wear what the women wear for a while, then see how fast that changes! 🤣

I have started a thread about it in the Controversial Threads section of the board. With the question if athletes/artists, etc can go back to their job in the spotlight after being convicted.

There are no rules against him participating. The IOC's code of ethics is about current behaviour not past behaviour.

He is not in the Village, but is housed outside, has no contact with others except his own team.

It is disgusting that he is allowed to compete and get this extra protection because of it. Putting others at risk.

I don’t want to see ANY celebrity in the audience.
What I want is when they show someone in the audience, they'd put the name of who it is underneath. Some of us are not aware of who it is! Fortunately my DDIL recognized Serena Williams. But I was able to identify Nadia Comenicie to her.

Nooo! I am not a fan of hers either.

I agree. At least they'll usually announce the names.

Oh, that's just how you know that you're getting old. I see commercials all the time, like the recent Amazon Prime Day ones, where I feel like I am supposed to know who that is, but I really have no idea who that is. 🤣

If jumbo shrimp is an oxymoron, what is the term for the IOC's code of ethics?
