I have been reading a lot for my first trip to IOA and wonder if it would be better to do Ollivanders first and then do FJ. We are only walking through FJ to see the details (no ride), so we are not in a hurry to get on the ride multiple times.

If you don't want to ride, then I think Ollivander's first is definitely the way to go, from what reports have said. That way even if there is a line for FJ that will just give you more time to see what is going on around you!

Yes, do Olivanders first. That line only gets worse as the day goes on.

As far as FJ goes, walking through the main line of the castle is fun, but one thing I enjoyed as well is walking through in the single riders line. If you are not in a race to get back on the ride you can linger more casually since you don't have a crowd urging you on. Anyone coming down that line you can just have go around you.You don't get to go through 100% of the castle this way, but I did find it easier to stay in the parts of the castle containing characters dialog where in the main line the crowds got antsy if you paused to listen. So go in the main line one time to see everything, but be sure to use the single rider line for a second time to catch everything.

We also got split up anyway. We were a family of 5. They made two of us wait for 5 other cars to go. I was getting rather upset at being passed by so much. The ironic thing is that the single riders just boarded any car anyway, so I think they ended up together and we had an empty seat. The boarding is so chaotic that the cars often go unfilled because someone is either too slow or use the single line to go thru fast then get together on the moving sidewalk.

We were there last week and I didn't notice the length of the line at Ollivandres changing much throughout the day so if you don't have early entrance I'm not sure it matters much. If you can get in early, definitely do Ollivanders first.
