Inspired by the Movie Classic, New Brand Debuts in 2,500+ Stores in 32 States

CINCINNATI, April 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Inspired by one of the most
beloved movie classics of all time, The Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR) today introduced
Disney's Old Yeller, a chunk style dog food now available at more than 2,500
stores around the country.
Disney's Old Yeller is a 100% complete and balanced product for dogs of
all sizes. It is available in 50 lb. bags priced at $9.99-$11.99, depending
on the geographic market. Two additional bag sizes will be introduced in
June. Kroger plans to support the brand with an aggressive advertising and
marketing campaign.
Released in 1957, Walt Disney's Old Yeller was the quintessential tale of
a boy's love for his dog. Set amid the landscape of 1860s Texas, a young boy
named Travis wants nothing to do with the lop-eared stray. But Old Yeller
quickly proves himself a loyal friend, protecting the family and saving
Travis' life. They soon become inseparable pals, sharing joyous experiences
and learning valuable lessons about growing up.
"The movie is a timeless classic that transcends generations, and we
believe this brand will appeal not only to original fans, but to the millions
of Americans who share the same kind of special bond with their beloved dogs,"
said Barry Vance, Kroger senior corporate category manager.
"Bringing Disney's Old Yeller brand to a trusted retailer like Kroger was
a natural fit," said Christopher King, category director, Disney Consumer
Products FMCG. "Disney's Old Yeller dog food is for those dogs that are part
of the family."
There are an estimated 61 million dogs in the U.S., with 39% of all homes
owning at least one dog. Americans spend an estimated $7.4 billion annually
to feed their dogs.
Headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio, Kroger is one of the nation's largest
retail grocery chains. At the end of fiscal 2004, the Company operated
(either directly or through its subsidiaries) 2,532 supermarkets and multi-
department stores in 32 states under two dozen banners including Kroger,
Ralphs, Fred Meyer, Food 4 Less, King Soopers, Smith's, Fry's, Fry's
Marketplace, Dillons, QFC and City Market. Kroger also operated (either
directly or through subsidiaries, franchise agreements, or operating
agreements) 795 convenience stores, 436 fine jewelry stores, 536 supermarket
fuel centers and 42 food processing plants. For more information about

I can see the lawsuits now...

Man Feeds Dog Old Yeller, Dog dies weeks later, Disney in Question. :earboy2:

Seriously. Old Yeller makes me CRY.

Why not Pluto's Dog food? That makes more sense.

I don't quite get why Michael gets a slap for this one -- he's not even mentioned or quoted in the article. "Christopher King, category director, Disney Consumer Products FMCG" is the guy who sold it and made it work economically, and honestly ... it's no worse than the Buzz Lightyear cereal or the Winnie the Pooh juice boxes.

I agree that Pluto's dog food would have been a MUCH better brand fit, though!

:earsboy:

I agree with WDSearcher, where is Eisner to blame for this? Not that it's even that bad. I think it's a good idea.

I don't think Eisner spends his whole day micromanaging every decision made about every aspect of the company. There are plenty of other high level executives running the divisions of Disney. So if your eggs taste funny at a character breakfast, there might be someone else to blame instead of Eisner.

*cough* Eisner is a dog. It was a joke, or pun. He would approve it because he's such a dog....

anybody?

Tough Crowd...

:rolleyes1

Buzz lightyear is marketable.
Pooh and friends (though sometimes pooh is questionable) is marketable.
A dead dog from a movie? not marketable.

Since when did advertisors decide to get on the dog food bandwagon. most people buy dog food for nutritional value, not the character on the outside.

In light of disney obvious plan to merge into animal products i suggest:

That Darn Cat food
Chip and Dale's Chipmunk Feed (for that pet chipmunk everyone has been wanting to get)
Thumper's Rabbit Food
Bambi Deer Feed
Ariel's Fish Food
Captain Hook's Crocodile Repelant
King Louie's Monkey Chow
Aristocats Elegant Cat food

And Mickeys Mouse food.

What fun! :rotfl:

Rereading the article it seems like Kroger was the one behind the idea and asked Disney for the right to use Old Yeller. Maybe you should all be blaming the CEO of Kroger instead of Eisner.

I dont really understand the condescending tone, I didnt post this to make a point about Eisner, i posted it because I think having Old Yeller Dog food is hilarious. And i was poking fun at Eisner saying he would approve something like this. Even though he didnt. Its irony. its fun.

CHILL OUT!!
:cold:

Sorry I didn't mean to seem condescending. I just see a lot of people jumping on the blame Eisner bandwagon. Seems like they have read on websites and in books that Eisner has "ruined Disney", so they think everything they don't like about the company is somehow his fault.

In reality if it wasn't for Eisner's leadership during the 80's and early 90's, Disney would probably now be a division of AOL Time Warner or some other large media corporation. I do think it's time for new blood and that Eisner's time has come to step down, but he is also largely responsible for the long term success that Disney has enjoyed the past 20 years.

Well, to be fair, you did use as your title "Approved straight from the mouth of Ei$ner!" That kind of implies that your point was indeed about Eisner. Apparently some of us didn't get the irony. Or the connection that "Eisner is a dog." Sorry.

:earsboy:

People have been emailing in possible new slogans for the product to the Save Disney site today;

"Of course, the fact is that they had to kill the dog. I wonder if anyone actually looked at the movie...???"

"When you want only the best for your dog's last meal... Disney's Old Yeller Chunk Style Dog Food."

"...Not having a dog, I'm waiting for Disney's Thomasina Extra Fancy Cat Chow." "Their slogan will be; "Your cat will think she's died and gone to heaven!"

"Disney's Old Yeller Chunk Style Dog Food is made from Disney's Stormy the Thoroughbred Twice-Milled Powdered Protein."

"Old Yeller Dog Food Small Print: If dog refuses to eat, shoot him."

"The Final Food you’ll ever have to buy for your friend.
Available now exclusively at Kroakers’ everywhere !"

"A true Travisity in canine cuisine!"

"All the heart, all the excitement of a great brand going to the dogs!"

"After a hard day of battling off snakes and bears, doesn’t your dog deserve this?"

"From the makers of Kanine Krunchies; Disney’s canine products division is pleased to announce: “Old Sweller” dog food.
Yes, with Old Sweller it won’t just be the dog food that comes chunky!"

:rotfl2: :rotfl: :rotfl2:

Travisity...funny, doesn't sound quite the same as travesty though.

SaveDisney...another website that people visit to find out how they are supposed to feel about things.

It took me a bit to figure out that the person meant "travesty". Not a high caliber of spellers sending in those comments I guess.

Funny, the way I read that is that the 'yolk' may not be on 'them'! ;)

Do you recall the name of the boy who was old yeller's 'master'?

SaveDisney...another website that people visit to find out how they are supposed to feel about things.

Not at all, it's a place to go to get a another view after having folks here and on other sites have already told you how to feel! :teeth:

So you go to SaveDisney and they tell you how to feel too? I guess I'm just a stickler for making up my own mind.

Not exactly, as with any process, data collection is critical.
I find that by gathering as much information from as many different sources as possible, and by reviewing the body of work in general, then drawing my own conclusions from the preponderance of those opinions is a reasonable and balanced method.

I didn't know Eisner and Iger posted on the Dis, ;) .

I didn't know Eisner and Iger posted on the Dis,

LOL! As it was suggested just after Iger's appointment, in a thread on the Rumors board - it was suggested their user names are ME and MiniME, respectively.

:teeth:
