"old school" beauty

Adding...

heavy-handed blue eyeshadow
mullets
beaded friendship pins on one's tennis shoes
the blouses/dresses with the big bow-tie at the neck for women (I have a portrait of my mother in one of these where she's also wearing the huge glasses from the 80s - 2 fashion faux pas in one pic...)

Acid-washed denim! :headache:

The "spilled bleach" spotted denim, too. My mom wouldn't buy me any, so I decided to do it myself... unfortunately no one told me to dilute the bleach first. Three brand new pairs of jeans with bleach HOLES in them - my Momma was not happy. lol

There is no mention of a mullet or a tail, that darn rat's tail. Gag!!

Monogramed sweaters.

The thick socks that were layered.

Collars up (there is a dad in my current town & he wears his collars up as does his son who is in 3rd grade. The dad wears sockless docksiders/boat shoes. All I can think about is how stinky his shoes must be but he does look cool..yeah..cool).

The countless rubber bracelets going up the arms.

I used to rip out the shoulder pads in all my shirts too. My shoulders were big enough with out them.

Capezzio shoes-white dance shoes. We all wore them & would polish them back to white when they got too dirty.

Thin ties on men.

Neon, heck I had a neon ski coat. What was I thinking?

DRIPPY Jheri curls... :scared:

I was shopping at American Eagle with DD over the weekend and made her try on flared jeans with platform shoes - just like I wore at her age back in the 70s!! I have to admit, I was very excited over the platform shoes. I used to love mine and now that I am older I have trouble wearing heels. I think a resurgence of platform shoes could give me some height without crippling my feet. Anyway, I didn't think I had any desire to bring back 70s fashions but she really did look cute in them.

Humongous eyeglasses that cover half your face. NO WAY I will ever wear those hideous things again.

anybody else remember the bead necklaces that you could combine the different strands and mix and match the colors? You could wear them long or twisted and held with a clasp.

And let's not forget the banana clip!

Twist-A-Beads!! I had strands of Twist-A-Beads color-coordinated to each of my sundresses for sorority rush at UGA in 1984.

Mid-80's college trends:

African carved animal jewelry

Worry doll jewelry

Big huge hairbows- they would stick out on both sides of our heads. Sorority girls were called "Bowheads"

Long straight khaki skirts that buttoned up the back- we'd unbutton them halfway up our thighs.

Dresses, sweaters, and shirts that had deep V backs. Covered in front, and your whole back was out.

African woven bags- came in different colors with leather handles and were round and deep- we used them for carrying books.

Tretorns or Keds with dresses or skirts

Laura Ashley dresses, worn a few sizes too big so they hung on us. Had to have the round white collar and tucked front bodice in all those different tiny floral prints.

Limited shaker knit deep V neck sweaters

Capezio black pointy-toed flats that showed "toe cleavage".

Jessica McClintock fussy dresses for formals.

I think I had those in every color. We also liked to wear them backwards.

And who didn't at some point wear a Jessica McClintock (Gunne Sax) dress?

I am going to have to go against some of you here. I loved my Gunne Sax dresses (and I looked adorable in them at the time).

I loved my Capezio Jazz shoes. They were comfy and cute.

I will agree on the shoulder pads. Boy were they HUGE!!!! and I have linebacker shoulders as it is.

"skirts/dresses over footless leggings with flats"

I really liked this look and I've worn it again now! I've obviosuly updated the flats and the tunic or dress. It is so comfortable.

I liked, and like, it too! comfy comfy and I think it's cute still (and not just on minors).

and most of all---Hypercolor shirts

The shirts were bad enough. But when I moved to South Carolina between '92 and '95, I saw SHORTS in that fabric. Seriously, shorts! In the South! That changed colors when you got warm? EWWWWWWWW.

Neon, heck I had a neon ski coat. What was I thinking?

That you wanted to be found in case of an avalanche?

My mom didn't have a lot of money for clothes for us, so we had to try to keep things a bit less trendy than those with scads of money. So the clothes I wore back then...I'd wear again. I tend to look decent in almost all colors, so I liked the neon (though had only one neon item if memory serves), I liked the bracelets, as i said above I liked the leggings with skirts (though I like wearing athletic shoes not flats), I liked the look of jelly shoes but thought I was the only one whose feet became unbearably sweaty, I liked my big earrings... I never did the big hair thing because I have very curly hair and it's curliest in front, and bangs do NOT work on me, especially not in the 80s when Dep was pretty much the only option (mousse does very little for my hair), and I had NO idea people spent SO much time with aquanet (thought their hair just "did" that)... So I even liked my hairstyles in the 80s.

Guess there was a bright side to being broke!

The 90s got a little interesting, though...:goodvibes

The ones that came to mind immediately for me have already been taken:

Poofy Bangs
Stirrup Pants
Acid Washed Denim

I'll try to add add another couple...

Swatch Watches
LA Gear tennis shoes
Eastland Shoes with that little way of tying the strings, I forgot what you call it, or how to do it...those who lived through the late 80s probably remember what I mean.

Polyester lime green leisure suits. :lmao:

Big shoulderpads. I hated looking like the football players. :rotfl2:

Big big hair. I could go from 5'3-1/2" to 5'9" with my hair back in 1988-1989.
:rotfl:

This picture is not me, but I remember rocking this look.... high top aerobic style shoes with pants tucked into the socks.:sad2: Can't say that look was flattering on ANYONE!!!

LOL, you brought back many memories for middle school/high school from about 84-90! I did love those Laura Ashley and Jessica McClintock dresses!

oh my gosh... pants tucked into big white socks! hideous when I look back at it!!

we called the big bangs "beer can bangs" because they fit around a beer can.

The leggings, flats and dresses look cute on young girls but I won't be going that route anytime soon!
