I may have posted before but can't remember. My dh lived with his parents, brother, and grandmother growing up. His family used to save money they found (mostly coins) in a special container. They saved it for a calendar year. Every New Year's Day they would count the money and divide it up. While it wasn't necessarily much money it was a tradition they enjoyed.
They also had a tradition of eating a piece of chocolate on New Years Day as soon as they got up They often bought horse shoe shaped chocolate for this purpose. Together the coins and chocolate symbolized a rich, sweet year to come.
