Old post about someone and their family picking up coins?

I may have posted before but can't remember. My dh lived with his parents, brother, and grandmother growing up. His family used to save money they found (mostly coins) in a special container. They saved it for a calendar year. Every New Year's Day they would count the money and divide it up. While it wasn't necessarily much money it was a tradition they enjoyed.

They also had a tradition of eating a piece of chocolate on New Years Day as soon as they got up They often bought horse shoe shaped chocolate for this purpose. Together the coins and chocolate symbolized a rich, sweet year to come.

We went to Hershey Park last week and as we were walking under where one of the roller coasters runs, our son found a quarter. Not much but to an 8 year old, it's a lot. Of course it doesn't make up for the bottle of water my husband lost out of his pocket on a later ride. heehee

For what its worth I would have still turned it in. If I find anything in a store I do, now in the parking lot its a different story.

So what is everyone's limit, in terms of how much money is too much to keep when you find it? And how else does location play into your decision about whether to keep the money or try to return it?

I found $80 in an ATM machine once (this was 30 years ago, so more valuable than $80 now) and turned it in to the clerk. My husband to be teased me for being honest and said that the clerk would just keep the money. But it's not my responsibility to make sure other people are honest, just to be honest myself.

I figure if it is an amount that someone would miss (more than a couple of bucks, I guess) and if there is a reasonable way to try to return it (a customer service desk, receptionist, etc), then I am going to try to return it. If I know for sure who lost the money (maybe I saw them drop it), I'm going to return it, even if it was a few coins.

Lol, I came off of a roller coaster at HP and found my DH and DS throwing their ball up at the net that caught the change, and catching the coins that were falling down.

Gee, I never see any coins on the ground. However, I did find a $10 bill outside the post office a few months ago.;)

There was a post about about a year and a half ago about someone and their family picking up coins off the ground and within a year they found over $70. Could someone pretty please bump the post for me? I tried searching for it and couldn't find it. At the time of the post I was pregnant so there was no way I was picking up coins. :lmao: Recently when I was wrapping our coins I remembered the post because it was really inspirational and for the past few months I've been picking them up. Thx!

I have never thought about keeping track of found money-especially those pennies and dimes you often spot. It's kind of a fun idea to do! :goodvibes

My family collects change!! My kids are always looking for loose change on the ground! They get so excited when they find some!! We have a piggy bank in our kitchen and when they have any change, they go "feed the pig"!! We use this extra money for our Disney fund!!

Whenever Kroger is having their 4x rewards points for gift card purchases (going on right now), I empty it and get Disney gift cards for our upcoming trip!! That also gives us the big discount of gas and that comes in really handy!! My kids love being a part of saving for our vacation to Disney!! :thumbsup2

Wow, that would have been a great idea. My son wanted to throw his ball up there but I was afraid it would stay up there.

Which coaster? I love Hershey Park!

It was under Skyrush and in a back alley sort of area that few were using. We had a lot of fun at Hershey as well.

Well my numbers were a little off, but yes - that's the post! It's amazing that you found it!

I stopped mid-jog yesterday to pick up a nickel. lol I don't go shopping that often (it seems like the majority of the change found is at stores), but I think I want to keep track of how much change I pick up.
I even got DH to pick up pennies. :rotfl:

LOL Cool that was my thread. Don't think I've ever had a thread bumped before.
You actually are correct. The year you see originally posted was our first year saving and counting the found money.
They year counts went like this:
2009 $44.03
2010 $22.83
2011 $70.66
2012 $64.34

We've dropped back down for this year but maybe we'll find some paper money yet and that'll get us back up. LOL
We've added other odd ways to save like if we've used a coupon and we would have bought the item anyway, we take that same amount and tuck it away. We won't count that pile until Jan 1....hope it's a biggie!

I worked in a restaurant one year during college as the cleaner. I saved all money I found in the main room and the bar. By the end if the summer I had saved over $60. The best find was a crumpled $5 bill. The waitstaff would leave me little surprises around the place, too, but even a little stack of pennies adds up after a while.

After my daughter was born, I used to take her for walks around our little street (about 1/4 mile for one loop). We found money every time where cars had been parked. My husband used to laugh at me until he realized the dollars were adding up. I still pick up change when I see it.

Yay, I'm not going crazy then! Lol.
Wow! Where do you find all of that change? Thanks for the inspiration. :)
